It's extra interesting to me because I had a very recent experience where this just describes exactly what was wrong with the situation. I was trying to play Plants vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville with a friend. I asked him how we get into the game and start playing. He immediately brings me over to this slot machine that you spend money on and cosmetics or something comes out. And I told him I wasn't interested, I just want to start having fun. He said, "This is the fun of the game." I almost just rage quit and ditched him right there. I just don't care about the meta games (xp bars, accumulative gold, whatever). Luckily, I was a little more patient and found the game to be pretty enjoyable. I never touched the slot machine. It just shows how differently people think from gamer to gamer.

The RTX AI upscaler is a bit too smooth for some content, but where I found it's amazing is in animated or cartoony videos. Watching a 480p anime look really sharp at 4K is a little mind blowing. Of course, it does get rid of small granularities like drawing lines and imperfections. So if the video you're watching relies on those small imperfections to give it character, you may lose that detail. If it's just straight lines though, it's amazing stuff.

As a Series S user, having features turned off is fine. Just getting it to 30FPS is all I would like. A 60FPS mode is considered a plus, but I get that it isn't always an option. To be honest, the biggest concern is that there are games that show they take the time to make a game look good on the Series S whereas a lot of games just turn all features off and run away from it. Knowing the specs of the lower system would help developers target a good midground. If some games can look good, it makes me think developers don't want to take the time to make things work. It is more work, but it is work that gets you a new audience, which is always a good thing. Lazy ports to the Switch and Series S are simply annoying. They want our money. I mostly agree with John on people holding out on buying games on day 1. You can count on one hand how many games I bought on day 1 for $60-$70 in the last 3-4 years. It has more to do with my interest in the title relative to the price more than anything, but a distrust in stability also plays a factor into that decision as well. But its undeniable that being 6 months behind the curb for game releases can save you a ton of money. Even for Switch, I can’t remember the last time I paid $60 for a Switch title. I usually wait for a decent sale. I really wanted Mario Party Superstars at launch but knew i’d be disappointed in it for $60. They did that with both DoS games, and they are doing that now as well. There is a reason why the console ports of DOS II came out a year later. Now they are trying to release everything at the same time, which is a unique experience for them. Also, visually comparing a self-published title with tons and tons of systems in it vs titles that are backed by huge companies and have all the money in the world. Also, making a 6 - 10 hour long game... kind of easier than a 100+ hour game with an insane amount of permutations in narrative, gameplay, world interaction, etc. The games you mentioned have the depth of a puddle compared to Baldur's Gate 3 or focus on one specific thing like Flight Simulator does. Dirt 5 had a studio that has like 700 - 800 full-time employees working for it. Larian has 250... and let's not talk about the other titles you mentioned because those teams were even bigger... Even if the graphics aren't the top of class, they still look totally fine. They clearly show to have more ambition and passion than any of the studios that worked on the games you've mentioned, simply because they aren't shackled to a publisher that loves to screw over studios and sucks any form of originality out of games. And come on, did Codemasters really need 800 people to bring such a mediocre piece of crap like Dirt 5? It's by far the worst in the series. Battlefront and Battlefront II had no depth whatsoever. COD hasn't had a single flash of originality since the first Modern Warfare. Fortnite... what an incredibly original idea... oh wait no... they basically ripped off another game and forced it into a COOP horde game that they were making at the time. Also, publishers love to focus on graphics, because they sell. Result? Mediocre gameplay, broken games on launch and no originality whatsoever because it might impact sales. The "games" you mentioned, I would honestly not call games. I call them templates that get re-used into oblivion. For once we have a developer that has more resources than a typical indie or AA developer, that has some ambition and can self-publish it. The first thing we complain about? "But... But... my Graphics". This is exactly why we don't get anything unique or ambitious anymore from bigger studios And lastly, the reason why Larian mentioned this at all, is because they have announced the PC and PS5 version to be released on August the 31st. And people were already accusing them of lying (because you know... that's the internet for you) about the fact that they said, there would be no console exclusivity. Hence, why they gave a reason why they didn't feel comfortable in already announcing the XBOX versions. It doesn't mean that they aren't going to make it work. It's just that they don't want to lie to people about it definitely being ready on August the 31st. You don't even know if the companies that you mentioned had issues with the release of those games or with something like the splitscreen. Why? Because they don't talk as openly about their development process. All those companies have meticulously made trailers, dev diaries and vertical gameplay slices that only show exactly what they want to sell. Larian actually had the balls to come up on stage when they first announced the game with a very rough alpha version and just play it instead of making an alpha version look like a polished game. Kind of refreshing really, a developer that's actually being honest about the state of their game or what hurdles they have encountered. But I guess you rather have them lying to you in telling that everything is going perfectly smooth. Like that company that made your Star Wars games, Dice. I do seem to recall that everything was indeed perfectly fine and on track with the last game they made. Yeah, Battlefield 2042 sure was a masterpiece... 700+ employees and all the money in the world, and they brought that out. And you are talking about Larian's lack of talent... oh dear...

I think gameplay mode parity is really important for Microsoft to maintain. They sold the Series S as a just a graphical/resolution drop and it'd be aweful for owners of that system to suddenly start getting cut out of gameplay features. The solution is really just for the developer to spend more time optimising the series S version, whilst also accepting that the splitscreen may run very poorly on the system.

To get around the parity requirement, perhaps Larian could remove split-screen co-op from the Xbox version altogether, and instead package it as free DLC for the Series X only. That seems like it would just be an extra step that would essentially just be the same as shipping it with the feature. Only now users would need to download it after launch at some point instead of receiving it at launch. And the same concern would be present I guess. How many games after that would ship features later after launch to Series X to get around the S requirement and PS5 gets it at launch in the main game. Personally I think they should just remove the requirement. What’s the point of having a more powerful console if it needs to be held to Series S specifications. And it only makes Sony’s platform more appealing to players. There are plenty of core gamers who grabbed an S when stock was low, but the S still seems like a more casual game pass machine and I’d be curious how many S users would actually care if full parity wasn’t there. Considering entire visual modes are not offered on Series S the requirement is kind of already broken. I get gameplay is different. But if this continues we’ll end up in the 360 era but reversed. In the 360 era there were games that shipped on XBox as the primary, and sometimes a year early with no exclusivity deal because the PS3 was hard to develop for. This could be another situation like that where the X gets subpar versions to get features to run on S, or it doesn’t get the game at all, or it gets it a year later or something. It’s definitely a net negative for the platform if this continues. Maybe it will be an issue with more games and maybe it won’t, but it does raise an interesting problem XBox has this gen. They push the power narrative with the X, but if that power is never able to be used than what’s the point of having it.
@Siemova Жыл бұрын
@@JaimeIsJaime Do the same on PS5, then. The vast majority of players won’t ever touch split-screen, so why force them to download it? It’s not a key or integral feature.

Sony only has one 9th gen console in terms of specs - the digital and disc PS5s are identical on the inside. Their machine-specific DLC excludes the 8th gen (e.g. HFW Burning Shores). This sort of exclusion has been done before with games like GTAV (the 360/PS3 versions received almost no updates compared to XB1/PS4/PC) and Payday 2 (360/PS3 basically abandoned after launch, PS4/XB1/PC got all the good stuff). I'm sure MS doesn't have a problem if XB1 gets excluded from gameplay features that the Series S/X get, but if it's between the Series S and X alone, I'm not so sure.

Why does digital foundry rate the Series S so highly? It appears to nearly obsolete already, and we’re still in a crossgen period? Low cost does not equal value.
@mandrews6282 Жыл бұрын
I think another concern with the Baldur’s Gate thing is that if they allow the exception then you essentially cannot sell an X/S version, and you now have an XBox game that is not compatible on both consoles. You can’t start a game on the X and pick up and play on the S presumedly. And they would, I assume, need to sell separate X and S sku’s. So there is definitely a potential can of worms there. But remembering how hard the PS3 was to dev for, which resulted in a few big budget titles, with no exclusivity deal in place, being developed for the 360 as a primary and sometimes not even ported to PS3 until the following year. This is not an enviable position for XBox to be in. And if it does result in pairing back the X version moving forward for parity, then the power of the X is basically wasted.

Of course it's a technical requirement to support Series S to ship. As far as game code goes, Series S and Series X are not two different platforms. They're the same platform. The same executable, the same disc, the same files. It's impossible to make a Series X game that the Series S wouldn't be able to open, because it's literally the same package. The only difference between them is a difference in settings that get loaded after the game is loaded. Like the kind of settings you can change on PC. The code itself detects whether it's running on a Series S or Series X, and then applies the correct settings configuration. The game itself can not prevent a Series S from running its code. So yes, in order to ship an Xbox game currently, it by default needs to support all configurations of Xbox Series hardware. Just like an "Xbox One" game must by default support all Xbox One hardware. It's not an Xbox Series X game or an Xbox Series S game, it's an Xbox Series game, and runs on any hardware that uses that platform.

The main problem in allowing S and X have different gameplay feature is that MS ended up needing to treat S and X as 2 different console. If MS allow it to happen, then you might encounter a dev tried to make a game which almost impossible to run on S but they still want to release in on Xbox. Will MS allow it? One possible type of games that is probably almost impossible on S without major cutbacks (thus making it look like a different game) is a game that use raytracing as a gameplay element. Imagine utilizing RT reflection as a part of gameplay where you need to spot your enemy from the reflection. Of course it is probably can be done on S, but again, the downgrade is probably going to be really big. Anyway, this is what I've feared when MS announced they were going to have S and X, which is basically S ended up being a roadblock. As a tech enthusiast, I don't like the existence of S, it is a stupid move from MS than ended up holding back gaming. On the other hand, I do like S simply because it means I don't have to buy mid to high end GPU for my PC but instead low end GPU should be capable playing modern games at a good performance level.

I always thought Series S was a bad idea. Sony effectively having one system just with or without a disc drive seems much simpler and offers higher quality games.

$400 for a disk less PS5 is also a major driving force behind their sales. No graphical down grade like the Series S and a perfect middle ground price between the 2 systems.

Exactly. Sony weren't being disingenuous and desperate to sell units

Anyone who makes a quick research will get into the conclusion that the $400 PS5 is a better purchase than series S.

DF - First of all, thank you for your excellent content. Second; I'd like to add my thoughts to day one patches. I'm one of those people who buys everything on disc where possible; I buy a game I'm looking forward to playing (bought day one or not, doesn't matter) and it goes in my Xbox and then.....patch. I have a 32mb connection. Sometimes I can't play the game until the next day (unless I disable the internet connection which I actually did for Overcooked! All You Can Eat as we wanted to play it immediately and the patch WAS BIGGER THAN THE INSTALL GAME ON THE DISC). But if we do this, the chances are we are going to play a broken game. Regardless of whether you have a good internet connection or not, day one patches introduce massive friction. We already need to wait for installs; and then we have to wait for a patch as well? Yes - Xbox allows you to download the patch at the same time but in my experience it's quicker and causes fewer issues if you disconnect your console, install, then update.

51:20 You are thinking way too cautiously on the Optimized Settings Database issue, Richard! Just ask the community to gather the data, they'll have it done it no timre! Someone on resetera or something will probably have it ready in a day if you just ask them for it :P You don't need someone you employ, who should rather make new videos instead, to do it.

Microsoft really overestimated how much textures takes up space in memory it seems.
@euj0 Жыл бұрын
Overestimated?
@biophobe1989 Жыл бұрын
@@euj0 I think he means underestimated.
@Alcatraz760 Жыл бұрын
@@euj0 No, i meant it. They assumed that the amount of memory from 4k to 1080p would be massive, through lower quality textures i presume, so they cut the Series S memory too much. Had they remembered that stuff like RT takes up memory regardless of resolution, they wouldnt reduce it as much
@yomamasohot6411 Жыл бұрын
I think then you would have to phrase it differently like " MS overestimated the drop in the amount of memory consumed by textures at a lower resolution"

Microsoft probably thought developers would take advantage of the full RDNA2 tools and features available on Series consoles to run games more efficiently but with PlayStation being the market leader while not being capable of using the more advanced tools on a hardware level developers seemingly skip using them 🤯
