Regarding Unrecord, it's much like Kane and Lynch 2, where it's faking the format of the digital camera that already distorts reality. When we look at low quality digital camera footage in real life, our brains skim over the imperfections and accept it's real. I think the animation/motion in Unrecord is the most convincing element - if you take that away then it would just look like a regular FPS game with cool lighting and detailed environments.
@licensetoshred Жыл бұрын
Bang on, I agree. It's still amazing looking but it's the animation and format that kills it for the realism factor as you said, bluedrake uploaded a lil corridor you can run through that's from the same Unreal Marketplace Asset Unrecord uses, it looks bloody great, but without the other stuff, it doesn't look the same lol.

Gran Turismo does that since the PS3 days if I'm not mistaken, it doesn't do path tracing obviously, but it uses the extra time to take the photo to render a prestine image.

I'm mostly using my Steam Deck when travelling, when I'm visiting folks or something like that, or when I'm in on a train. I've also been using it a fair bit connected to a larger display. It's nice not having to move my PC to the living room if I'm playing a less demanding game. I think I would actually like a handheld that I could bring to the park or something like that! But the Deck is not that machine. Screen is too dim and it's a bit too chunky to be truly practical in all situations. I'm probably going to get an ARM handheld (Ayaneo Pocket Air looks potentially promising) at some point to fill that niche.

Regarding the question about APUs, what many people don't realize is the fact that both PS5 and Xbox SX lack L3 cache. Like there's literally none. And it makes sense considering the amount of space SRAM requires compared to logic. AMD had to not only squeeze a large iGPU, but also a CPU on the same die so it had to go to keep the die-size reasonable small. But on those consoles that's not a huge limitation because of the GDDR6. The GDDR6 is still slower than on-die cache, but it's still a lot faster than 'regular' DRAM system memory.
@Cogglesz Жыл бұрын
I hadn't a clue about that! I'm wondering if that perhaps effect porting to a degree? Perhaps they set up a different pipeline compared to how they would if they had the L3 cache from the get go? I'd hope not considering these games are all designed on pretty much near regular computers i hope it's not detrimental to the pc porting process (mainly thinking of Sony titles that come to PC Later Feel only GOW & DS where the only good at launch titles without bugs)

Overdrive in CP 2077 would be a very compromised experience on PS5/XSX as Oliver alluded to. We definitely won’t get pathtracing in complex open-world games on console until next gen. But, based off how Quake 2 RTX runs on a 6700 xt at 1080p, I think it would be in the realm of possibility for path traced retro games to come to the current gen consoles. It’ll probably be at least 3 generations before AMD has a good path tracing mid range card for modern games that can be slotted in a console, but that’s about the time a next gen console would be expected to come out (2028).

🤔 years ago, I saw a video claiming that camera settings in first-person shooters are all wrong, flattening the perspective. It then showed a proposed alternative that greatly exaggerated the change in perspective with mouselook. It was neato at the time... but it also seemed really impractical from a gameplay standpoint. I can't find the video now, but it looks like this Unrecord game is using the same technique.

So glad to hear Alex’s take on Unrecord. Sure, it doesn’t look bad, but I don’t think it’s the graphical showcase people were freaking out over. Reminded me of P.T. A bit, how the texture choices and lighting made it look real, but on close look it was pretty clear what was going on.

I initially saw the Unrecord footage on my crappy network QoS limited workstation and no frills 1080p TN LCD monitor. KZbin had seen fit to reduce the streaming quality to 480p and it actually looked significantly *more* convincing than the 4K 60fps footage I'm seeing at home. The low fidelity of the 480p/30 stream really enhanced the almost found-footage sense of realism. Looking at it now, it's still impressive but it's very very clearly not photoreal.
@michaelt5459 Жыл бұрын

I loved to see Stalker modding being mentioned here, I'm looking forward to Anomaly getting Path Tracing (as it has a dedicated engine team, and the game still has a DX8 renderer that is compatible with remix, just like Portal. But in the realm of Modding, I'd like Digital Foundry to cover the DLSS 3 mod for Skyrim, that adds DLSS and Frame Generation with Reshade and ENB support, made by PureDark. It's still in alpha, with Reflex not working (has a bug with DX11 that Nvidia is working on) but it's such a good with for the game as with 800+ mods, it's easy to hit engine and API limitations, and Frame Generation completely solves that with just a little more latency.

Honest question: Why has RTX 4070's unprecedentedly bad launch not been covered on recent DF Directs? 🤔 The card has been a historic flop for a 70-class product, with plenty of stock available on day one and prices already falling below MSRP, just two weeks after launch. The 4070 has sold so badly, that retailers are already resorting to desperation tactics like offering $100 steam gift cards and entire Intel GPUs as sweeteners. Consumers have rejected $600 as the new "mid-range", leaving Nvidia with another failed launch. It's a big story that I've seen covered across many large websites and YT channels, but Digital Foundry are weirdly silent on the matter. What gives?

Because that kind of discussion isn't what DF is about. They're interested in the state of the art and how gaming benefits from it, not pricing and value discussions

@@malaki7123 They literally review graphics cards and CPUs, with price forming a part of their evaluation. Also, they've talked about the price and value of GPUs many times on the podcast, covering recent launches from both AMD and Nvidia. The lack of 4070 launch coverage is a weird omission.
@malaki7123 Жыл бұрын
@@WickedRibbon They absolutely do, and if a review period lines up with a DF Direct, they'll sometimes address it there as well, but again, DF has evidenced themselves as very much interested in the state of the art and the visual artistry achievable with new hardware. They leave pricing discussions to literally every other tech outlet and the internet populi at large because they don't really have anything to add to the discussion that hasn't already been said outside of whatever they said in their reviews.

Unrecord is definitely impressive as a full package. The developers have done a really good job with putting together all of the different elements to create a pretty unique looking game that will likely provide a similarly unique experience. Hopefully the gameplay will have more depth by the time it's finished, but so far they have an extremely solid foundation. The thing that I actually found most impressive about Unrecord is the first person animations for the player arms, hands and the gun. Like, it's actually pretty wild just how life-like the animations appear to be. When I was watching the demo, I was positive at first that it was a VR demo since that would explain the realistic movements of the hands and the gun. But then I realized that it was actually a mouse and keyboard game with a finely tuned decoupled camera setup, which really blew me away. If you ask me, it's the camera solution and the first person animations that are doing all the heavy lifting to make the game look as realistic as it does.

Question did Digital Foundry ever cover Quantic Dreams PS4 tech demo "The Dark Sorcerer"? Its still amazing and makes me miss those types of demos. I guess now days the games are the demos.

Really think DF should look at the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC: Update project at some point. The sweeping engine, asset, and system overhauls to me make it almost a similar in scope to Black Mesa.

Aside from the graphics of Unrecord. The animations are slot on. The way he checks mags and the unjam animations are really top notch! Animation+graphics really sell the immersion.
@thepunisherxxx6804 Жыл бұрын
Unrecord impressed because rarely do game developers try to make REALISTIC lighting. Combination with the movement, animations, and high assets impress. Game devs always have some dumb color grading or contrasting dark shadows or something that immediately shows it as a video game. Its also a static demo we cant play yet. Its very possible they jacked up ray tracing and the budget to show off this slice as a video. Time will tell if the actual game holds up to this standard and can actually run well and look like this.

those immortals of aveum specs mean a sizeable majority of the PC market won't meet the minimum requirements. and if those specs are going to be the norm for current-gen only games, imagine if you bought a regular 3060 on launch in 2021 - your card may already be well below the minimum threshold for new releases.

The Forbidden West engine is really kicking ass, I wished the company would make it open source or something or give it to some other developpers... like Epic does.... The Unreal Engine 5 needs competition and this is a great one.
