I have the same love you do for HFW. The difference is that I started Forbidden West knowing I would avoid the main story lines and quests as much as possible in favor of just roaming the world on foot campfire to campfire. Zero Dawn prepared me for this new kind of game play. All former open world games never had such challenging, interesting, puzzling, and dangerous random trekking. I hail from the Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Borderands, and GTA genres. I always felt "on a leash". I am 76 years old. The things that enthrall the majority of gamers today mean little to me. Finding that chunk of gleem in the middle of nowhere after clearing a herd of Apex machines is all I need. The shock of having machines sneak up on me when I least expect it, mana from heaven. They have to cater to the RPG and FPS clientel, I get that. But let's hope Chapter 3 keeps to the tradition of story telling and world building without borders. Thankyou for being a fellow traveler in HFW. My dream? Trekking through an even more expansive Horizon where you could occasionally run into other friendly MMO players. Ahhh on second thought maybe not!

Thanks, what an amazing perspective! I love how you've approached Horizon Forbidden West with such a unique mindset, focusing on the freedom to explore in the world rather than just following the main storyline. yeah, coming from the Tomb Raider, Uncharted, etc. backgrounds, I can understand the feeling of being “on a leash” and how liberating Horizon’s world must feel in comparison. And wow, 76 years old and still exploring new virtual worlds! That's so inspiring -- i wanna be like you! 😄 Yes, I would be very disappointed if the next chapter of the series does not continue to embrace the same kind of storytelling and open world / world-building. Thank you for sharing your journey and passion for HFW. It's great to connect with fellow adventurers who appreciate the beauty of this game as much as I do 💪

You don't even know how happy I am that the KZbin algorithm suggested this video to me. I thought there was something wrong with me for feeling this way about the game-too emotional, too nostalgic. But now I see I'm not alone in these feelings, and that brings me relief. The game itself has its issues, but all of that fades in comparison to the incredible story you can experience here.

You're not alone. I was saddened when I finished all the quests in Zero Down and even more so when finishing Forbidden West and its DLC. Up to a point that I wished I could erase both from memory and experience them again. And maybe I will someday replay both, perhaps when the 3rd game is announced.

When the credits song played after the opening section of the game, and we went with aloy through the journey of the first game and into the West, leaving her friends behind... I got genuinely emotional. I was moved. The beautiful song performance really captured the pathos of her transition into the west and her change and growth as a character to start this new journey. It also emphasized how isolated she was feeling and how disconnected from the world with everything she'd learned. That really set the mood. it's just right for her to grow and change over the course of the game as she expanded her in her Circle and trusted people. I had some ups and downs with the story choices in the game, but ultimately I loved the environments, I loved the side quests, and I love the characters. This is my top franchise right now in the gaming industry.

@@stand_alone_complex5620 Haha same, I played through HZD at least 4 or 5 times but HFW, I knew it was going to be amazing so I didn't rush through it. Now, I'm going to do another studious playthrough and make sure I do all of the sidequests again and literally walk every inch of the map. HZD, I literally walked every inch of the map but I haven't done that with HFW as yet. I want to eventually memorize the map to the point where I could look at the landscape and know exactly where I'm at and would never need to use the map again. "Horizon Forbidden West" was a breathtaking experience for me - I hadn’t picked up a controller since the PS2 era, so coming back with this game was like stepping into another world entirely. I hadn’t played Horizon Zero Dawn, so I went in with no background, just pure curiosity, and wow… I was blown away. The world was alive with stunning scenery and depth - I’d find myself just pausing to look at the landscapes, like I was on a journey through some beautiful, broken future. The story had me hooked, almost like I was watching an epic movie, and I couldn’t stop myself from wanting to unravel each mystery, wondering what was around the next corner, where the story was going, and what new twist would reveal itself. Of course, some story elements could be tweaked here and there, but overall, I loved every moment. When the game ended, I honestly didn’t want it to be over. I’ve replayed it multiple times, always rediscovering little details I’d missed, and each time it’s just as captivating. For a game to capture that kind of magic - especially for someone coming back to gaming after all these years - speaks volumes. It’s a masterpiece, through and through.

I resonate with you, bro. I felt it with Horizon Zero Dawn then later with Horizon Forbidden West. After maxing out Aloy and her equipments, I just used the game as a relaxing walking opportunity in the evening, to sooth my mind, handle stress. Almost never run, never used a mount, never used Fast Travel. I have ~1200 hours in ZD and ~1400 hours in FW, and still counting. And it's just 2 weeks and we'll get a brand new Horizon Zero Dawn. 😊🤘🏼

I just ended the 2nd game some weeks ago and I'm a bit twisted. On one hand, it's still endlessly relaxing to enjoy the breathtaking environments, on the other hand, it can feel a bit lifeless, now that just about every quest is done and interaction with other characters is therefore pretty minimal.
@merion2973 ай бұрын
@@stephanhuebner4931 Please elaborate. I couldn't exactly grasp the problem. :)
@stephanhuebner49313 ай бұрын
@@merion297 The problem (for me) is, that there is no *new* interaction with Aloys friends after having done all quests, and having the same lines repeated again and again takes away some of the immersion that one feels while playing through the game. So now there is 'just' enjoying the admittedly captivating landscape and fighting some of the more humongous creatures now and then. Oh, and trying to get all possible outfits and face paintings, but these don't add much in terms of interaction.
@merion2973 ай бұрын
@@stephanhuebner4931 I see. Yeah, I miss that as well but I don't expect it because that's much much studio work and face capture. If, for example, in part 3, they wire the AI into the NPCs, that will solve the problem and we'll get infinite interactions. 😏

Lol my god dude... Your mind must work a lot like mine, cus I had basically ALL of the same thoughts you did while playing this! All the detailed info in this game about the "Clawback era" & how climate change almost killed off Humanity in the 2040's, and the existence of A.I., unmanned Military aircraft, robots and how the Government might use them... it made me really think about how these things could all invevitably come true one day! For a game about Robot Dinosaurs, the narrative is shockingly grounded in reality! All the tiny details and story bits strewn about, all told from a VERY realistic, human point of view is what truly sells the immersion of this game for me. Those little descriptive datapoints that describe random events that happened before the whole FAS glitch just really suck you into this world and it's reality! It's so nice to finally hear someone talk about the game in the same sort of way that I felt while playing it! I will say that for me, combat DID start to get rather repetitive later on, and I mostly think that was due to me becoming TOO powerful & too familiar with the battle mechanics, to the point where I was basically able to break the combat with sheer perfect Coil builds on my weapons. I think I would have more fun next time if I were to hard limit myself to Blue weapons only! Maybe if I don't ever use anything more powerful than those, then maybe the combat would be forced to be tougher & more engaging in general. Sometimes, restriction can breed creativity, which can in turn breed fun! More devs should be aware of this, that sometimes more isn't always better.
@johez2 ай бұрын
haha and wow, it’s awesome how much your experience mirrors mine! yessss, the way it makes you think about things like AI, climate change, and the potential misuse of technology is both fascinating and unsettling and it felt so realistic. Thanks again so much for sharing your thoughts 😊

Thank you very much for your experience! I can really relate to that. I was never really into PlayStation games since PS1, but then I found and played Horizon Zero Dawn on PC - and was stunned. Characters, story, visual effects, music, gameplay... it was so perfect. Especially the lore, the inevitable end of all life on earth. After so many apocalyptic scenarios in games and movies, this was something that could absolutely happen in 40 years. After “HDZ”, I was truly lost. So I bought a PS5 just to play “Forbidden West” and see what happens next. They did a lot, maybe a little too much side by side, and yes, the story about the Fare Zeniths isn't that “exciting” and Nemesis doesn't have the WTF moment where you find out what Zero Dawn was, but I loved tying everything together, making new friends, learning about new cultures, and finding a way to save the planet with my friends or at least buy us more time. What a masterpiece! I still love just wandering the lands or flying and resting while taking in the incredible views. I got my first computer in 1978. I was interested in the technology and wanted to learn coding. But of course I also began playing games. Since then I played strategy games, rpg, adventures and so on. I also played LOTRO for several years and tried games like Doom, the Fear series, Far Cry and some of the RE series. After 2017 I heard some rumours about Zero Dawn but I didn‘t own a PS4 and so I wasn‘t interested. And then, about 3.5 years I tried Cyberpunk and felt bored after some hours of play, and after that I purchased a cheap steam key for HZD. The first start of the game was a disaster, it freezed in the first cutscene. I cannot remember how I fixed it, but as it worked, I was blown away from the first minute. The story is so good, I always wanted to go further, to learn what‘s next. I had to hold back, because I wanted to explore every single area. I’ve never been so attached to a game, I‘m totally in love with the game… and yes, Ive got to admit I‘m also in love with Aloy. It was so new how they introduced her as baby, as child and how we could see her grow up. She has her problems but she is positive, hopefull and such a nice change compared to all those troubled main charakters in other games that are fighting their own demons. To see how she develops during the two games makes me kind of proud as if I‘m her father. 🤣 I was really sad when I saw the end credits. Now I own a PS5, the only reason why I purchased it is to play Forbidden West, and I never regretted.

Your video reflects my own feelings perfectly. I was already mesmerized by the first game, due to its frightening and frighteningly good storytelling, so much so that, even though Aloy had some kind of development, the main story overshadowed everything. I only finished the 2nd game a few weeks ago, so my feelings about it are pretty fresh. And I did not want it to end! I felt a loss when the credits rolled, especially so after the DLC. I didn't expect it to be as good and as captivating as it was but imho, it was even *more* breathtaking, especially the environment itself. So much so that I truly felt like wandering through a forest or a desert. And the flying over those wonderful landscapes tops it all. Even the diving was mesmerizing. Character-wise, I loved to see some of her old friends reappear and being able to interact with, and there was this one, almost heartbreaking moment, something that rarely happens in games these days, I think. I also loved to see Aloy grow and wisen up about what's important, all throughout the game and especially in the DLC. It seems that there's a bit of controversy about its very end, but I think it fits Aloys development perfectly, that she came to find that fighting for an anonymous population alone isn't enough, that there need to be special people that one deems worth saving and worth fighting for. In that regard, it kinda reminded me of the story of The Matrix, where the love for Trinity was essential for Neo to fulfill his mission. This comment is already too long, but another thing you said rang true to me: It will be hard to top the experience of these games. I may be a bit too enthusiastic, but I regard them as high up on the ladder in open world games as I do regard Hollow Knight in the genre of metroidvania games, in every regard.

If this is true, the quality of the animations/cutscenes deepens this immersion even more. That's what I thought had been done to perfection in Hellblade I and II as well. I know I tend to babble too long (sorry for that), but with these games I think the scientific theory of mirror neurons comes into play, which are said to activate in an observer the same way they do in the observed person. We see the protagonists emotions on their faces and feel the same way.
@johez3 ай бұрын
Thanks, that's exactly the impact I hoped for. You make a great point about the "imperfect" hero. Yeah, seeing Aloy’s emotions so vividly on her face does activate something in us as players, letting us feel what she’s feeling on a more deeper level. No need to apologize for sharing / babbling - i like this kind of discussion :D haha, Thanks again!

I've _loved_ playing HFW. I started with the PC release back in March, and am now on my third playthrough. The Burning Shores DLC adds some really nice features and weapons, giving you a lot of options to experiment with different playstyles. My first playthrough was using the Nora Thunder Warrior outfit for a general all-around build, my second was the Tenakth Vanquisher for a low-health/weapons-techniques build, and now I'm using the Tenakth Tactician for a low-health/mounted-combat build. And then after that there's the Quen … Commander, I think? for trying a low-health/melee build. There's so much depth to the game, you really can keep finding new things on multiple playthroughs. But I'm like you. Sometimes I just have to stop whatever I'm doing, look out over the landscape, and let the music play. It's so well-done. Once other thing that blew my mind: when you start a NG+ and go back to the beginning, it's really jarring how different Aloy's character is at the start from where her journey eventually takes her as a person. You don't notice the change when you're playing, but snapping back to how she was at the start makes it really apparent. Credit to the writing team for writing such a drastic character arc so subtly that you don't even realize it's happening. Excellent video! Well done.
@johez4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! Wow, I'm impressed you're already on your third playthrough - nice! Burning Shores was epic! And yeah, I totally feel you on stopping just to take in the landscape and music - it's like the game demands those little moments of awe. Oo okay! It’s wild how you don’t even realize how much she changes until you see the contrast. Yeah, huge credits to the writers! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and happy gaming on that fourth playthrough! 🎮

Have you traveled in the United States? The games are set in the west, Zero Dawn between Colorado and Bryce Canyon, Utah, and FW between Zion and San Francisco. Visiting these places IRL enhances the sense of loss in the game's backstory, and the wonder at how the developers represented the landscapes. I will say I like the story and music far more in Zero Dawn, but I was stunned at the graphics upgrades and the overall scale of Forbidden West. I spent hours in photo mode in Zion canyon, Plainsong, and Yosemite valley.

I'm still working on 100% completing (as well as uncovering all data points and fog) the game after playing through it once to focus on the main story. I'm a little over 100 hours played so far, and I am counting the days till Horizon 3 is revealed. As for Zero Dawn, now that I've put in over 700 hours. I don't like to compare the two games as they are quite a few years apart. However, I will admit that Forbidden West has better visuals, and the character expression is far more realistic. Not to mention that the boss fights and cinematic grandeur (especially in the Burning Shores) blows Zero Dawn out of the water. But, Zero Dawn will always have a special place in my heart. Maybe because it was my first introduction to the story and world of Horizon, or something about its beautiful imperfections, but Zero Dawn is definitely my favorite in the series so far (I'll have to see if I hold the same opinion once I play Horizon 3). I love the story and lore of Horizon, and I think it is probably my favorite work of fiction. Horizon Zero Dawn, is my all-time favorite video game.

I agree, the epic boss fights in Forbidden West felt bigger and more intense, and the cinematic moments were just breathtaking. Wow, 100% completion is a huge task! I’m also counting the days until Horizon 3. It’ll be exciting to see where the story goes and how it compares to the first two. I'm hoping Horizon 3 raises the bar even higher! :)

Yeah. After I complete Forbidden West again, I'll play through the main story of Zero Dawn before I play the remaster.

Best game I've ever played :) I definitely didn't want it to end either. Now I am replaying it on Ultra hard from a fresh start (no new game plus), just got Demeter. I've actually damaged my controller while playing because of the stress haha, the rubber is coming off the joystick. It's well worth it :)

Haha, that’s dedication! 😄 Ultra hard -- wow respect! Sounds like Horizon is giving both you and your controller a serious workout! 😂 The rubber of my controller's left stick also came off because of the intensity of the fights 😎

Horizon is the only "mainstream" AAA franchise I'm interested in ATM

So much this, all of it. I had really no idea what Horizon was back in November 2023 but then Sony had a crazy Black Friday sale with Zero Dawn on sale for under $20. I jumped right in and was HOOKED, played it nonstop for the next month until I beat it. Quite frankly, Zero Dawn is the *greatest* video game story I've encountered in recent memory. Once I beat Zero Dawn I immediately jumped into HFW on PS5 and what an upgrade that was, in so many ways. Beat that too and since then, I've gotten both games on PC and am playing them again just to experience it with a mouse and keyboard-- and even though I've done this before on PS5... I don't care! At the end of the day, Horizon is my newest video game obsession (and I don't have many) and you bet I *can't wait* until Horizon 3, even if it's five years from now.

Man, I feel this so much! 😄 Nice Black Friday sale! yeah - same thing happened to me, I was hooked from the start. The story in Forbidden West really is something special. It's awesome that you're replaying them on PC now! Is it better gaming experience with mouse and keyboard? And yessss, Horizon 3... even if it's years away, I'm waiting for it. This series has become one of my all-time favorites too. Let's hope the wait will be worth it!

@@johez Probably the most beneficial thing with mouse and keyboard is that using a mouse is SO much more "free reign" when it comes to aiming your weapons, and you can respond faster than with the controller. The tradeoff though is that the Dodge motion where you roll to avoid stuff? It's mapped to Left CTRL underneath SHIFT which is Run. I never really roll as a result because I don't think about it based on where my fingers are for normal movement. So if I want to roll, I have to remember to actually reach down with my left hand and it's not something I actively think about as a result... if that makes any sense?
@johez4 ай бұрын
Haha, I get you! 😄 Yeah, aiming is definitely easier on PC -- but for some reason, I kinda like it on PlayStation too. Maybe there's a better key for dodging than Left CTRL? 🤔 When I think about my own playing on PlayStation, I dodge A LOT!

1000 hrs later I do wish Forbidden West would never end. But if you want a game that actually never ends, I would suggest Final Fantasy XIV. Now there's a game that may outlive us all... 😳😳😍😍

While I love HZD and HFW, I think the game that did for me what this title does for you is Shadow of the Colossus. It has feeling, sweep, grandeur, sadness. As much as I love that game and this one very much, TLOU 1 and 2 are my all time favourites. The moral dilemmas are beautifully developed and viscerally gripping.
@johez4 ай бұрын
I haven't even played Shadow of the Colossus yet! Yeah, for me too, TLOU 1 and especially Part 2 were super awesome and at the same time, tough games - they stick with you for a long time after finishing them. The moral dilemmas and the way they pull you into the characters' struggles are just on another level.
