+1 for Alex making a frame pacing Video. Going in depth on Vsync, how it functions, and why it's 20+ year old "legacy" implementation has lead us to this grab bag of marketing named various "technologies" which are confusing to sort out. If you are someone who wants, max framerate, smooth pacing, VRR and minimum latency, explaining what we need for that (especially not limited to a single vendor) would be great.

So I'm pretty sure the referencing the budget, but yeah that that kind of thing kind of bothers me a little bit.. The big game versus small game versus whatever.. and it's all relative too. A lot of features that the largest game titles use in art direction, often make them look and feel much cheaper to me than a lot of lower budget titles with a cleaner scope.. not that 'that' is much of a thing anymore, as it seems a lot of lower budget, or pretty much every game nowadays seems to operate with best practices from the built-in engine.. which usually means a lot of nonsense garbage that absolutely destroys things like clarity, and I'm not talking about temporal sampling although how they implement it is often a problem as well.. At the very least with a lot of unreal titles you can at least upload your list of wishes into the engine INI and hope and pray that you can gain some sort of clarity in the rendering.. unity is.. honestly the fact that unity works that way, and the fact that developers are just like. Yes high quality low, this is all we need.. I hope that engine dies a horrible death.. But honestly developers should still have some sort of comprehension that everyone is better suited to a bespoke experience of these various techniques based on hardware and preferences.. which just used to be normal. But then clarity used to be a feature. I think one of the clearest, no pun intended, examples of how effery can ruin something, I recently downloaded some of the fixes, for the post-processing problems of Riddick assault on dark Athena, which is gameplay-wise far superior to the initial outing... Easily the best way to play butcher Bay, and it's sequel is actually really good.. I didn't quite understand what people had a problem with until trying to get it to run again. I become extremely sensitive to things like depth of field blur and post-processing blurs, especially with older titles where The line between clear and blurry is very noticeable in the lower resolution of those plus processing attempts.. The fact that a very small sized fix is possible for that game, and the difference it made just by turning off nonsense.. But still keeping things like the color correction and what have you that is usually disabled because everything is grouped into a single post-processing option? My God it looks.. It looks like the original, but you know with better lighting and better textures and better everything.. But I get what they were talking about.. and once you get into the second game, and the higher fidelity base assets show up, to this day it is a darn good looking game.. with that hacky carmack inspired wonderful engine that they developed.. But I could see how you could get the impression it wasn't without the mod.. The same thing can be said for their wolfenstein titles.. removing post-processing adds a clarity that is just unparalleled by comparison... The downside is that you have to recreate things like bloom and color grading in reshade, and for the new order title you have to kind of force some sort of temporal sampling solution as the in-game anti-aliasing options causes serious resource management error, and all of this needs to be done through a hacked executable thanks to an enterprising individual, who's done several PC-centric fixes the proper way, and this was just to be able to fix id5 on a frame rate cap and interpolation and texture streaming level. Like you know... You could have done this with the developer's console, but they locked it out in retail. And while the second one had some issues, one of the biggest was how they rendered fog... In addition to locking things behind the developer's console.. thankfully there's a fix that is brand new, adds things like a flashlight as well, adds things I never thought I would ever be able to have like FOV fixes for the iron sights lol, shout out, and check out modDB, it's a bespoke DLL injector that adds a GUI with a series of incredibly useful preconfigured options, as well as unlocking the command console for more granular control if needed.. It has a fast forward button. My God it has a fast forward button.. Sure you could use time scale, if you unlock the developers console, which is also annoying even further on on six as it was on five, I'll be at less of a necessary thing, although, still necessary in the end go figure.. But.. unfortunately the skip fog feature which makes things so much crisper clearer and better, also does have some artistic use that is somewhat required for some of the backgrounds and whatnot... I don't know why they went so ham on it though and just made the game look genuinely like I had just jumped into the worst balanced pool ever and just tried to completely bleach my eyes with chlorine. Keep in mind we're we've already just not even considered the idea of not going through and completely gutting things like depth of field and whatnot and radial blurs that have ruined everything these days.. or the motion blur they have in the game that is so utterly overtuned, you can't actually do anything in the movement and fast-paced shooter without the screen being completely blurred most of the time..

1:06:25 I may be wrong here but don't the 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 chroma schemes refer to compression in YCbCr rather than RGB? As in the Y (luminance) is full resolution as it's what our eyes perceive with the most detail, but the color data is compressed. If I recall correctly Cb is blue, Cr is red and green is redundant as it can be deduced as the difference between the red+blue and the total luminance.

I literally know a dude who bought the Xbox One S thinking it would do 4K gaming, I had to explain to him it did 4K only for video content (not games) and additionally he needed a 4K TV. Dude was so oblivious he thought he was having 4K gaming with his Xbox One S on his regular Full HD TV. So yeah, putting 8K label on the box is highly misleading for the layman.. It is a cheap trick that can in fact fool the unaware.

I think the ramp up to 4K and more pixels and now the ramp down is down to a single factor for gamers: We used to have bad antialiasing. Now we have extremely high quality supersampled temporal algorithms or outright DLSS. That fixes the need to want higher res to remove unpleasant rendering artifacts and means 1440p becomes a very pleasant gaming experience with no real drawbacks. I dropped from 4K to 1440p OLED and I'm happy as a clam.
@davidruppelt
@davidruppelt 2 ай бұрын
Good observation, that seems plausible. I don't agree with the "extremely high quality" part though. It sure is a lot better than it was, but it softens the image. Games without any AA are still a lot sharper, and as long as that is the case, there is a benefit to higher res displays. I moved from 1440p to 2160p and expected games to actually be sharp, but they are just sharper. Still a lot less sharp than reality. Though I am happy that this moved the priorities to higher refresh rates, because those were also severly lacking.

422 and 420 do not operate in RGB. They operate in YCbCr Y represents luminance, and that is always full resolution Cr and Cb represent Chroma channels, which work differently than RGB, but are a representation of hue and saturation 422 has half resolution chroma channels, and 420 has quarter resolution chroma channels. In all cases, if you turned the image to black and white, it would appear perfectly full resolution, but it's the color information that is lower res. For reference, EVERY blu-ray and TV show you've ever watched is sampled at 420, and nobody really notices it, because our eyes have a lower sensitivity to color information. The only time it becomes a problem is typically with very small colorful text.

Why can the cheapest laptops and mobile devices adequately render text while high end monitors just...can't. I don't understand how your eyes can look at poorly rendered text and not be bothered but are sensitive to changes in shading and frame pacing that my eyes struggle to see. Everyone is different, I guess.

Oof. That "explanation" of chroma subsampling was very wrong. This format uses YCrCb rather than RGB. Y (luminance) is always full bandwidth. Cr and Cb (color delta channels) are subsampled, with 4:2:2 using 1/2 samples in X only, and 4:2:0 using 1/2 samples in both X and Y. Yes, the terminology is really stupid.
@Girugi
@Girugi 2 ай бұрын
The talk here about chroma subsampling misses the mark. It is not rgb. That is the whole point. You can compress more effectively if you do it in chroma space. The numbers indicate how many samples there are per 4 pixels(pretty much) . 4:4:4 means there is full precision for luminense (brightness), and for the color. 4:2:2, means that every pixel has full luminance, but the colors is shared 2 pixels at a time. 4:2:0 groups colora 4 pixels at a time, and same for 4:1:1, but in different patterns. The rgb talk, where green is higher precision, that is just when bit depth is crunched. Is still used at times, but not with modern monitors.
@Girugi
@Girugi 2 ай бұрын
In practice what this means is that it is quite high quality on regular pictures and content, with accurate colors and brightness. But single pixel size elements which varies strongly in specifically color, can have very visible artifacts. Like if you have a cold deal background and has a small size red font in front, the text will look broke. So it's not great for programming... But pretty great for games and movies still. Though, of course 4:4:4 is better.
@zeroone8800
@zeroone8800 2 ай бұрын

It will make sense for VR eventually. When your eyes are right up against the screens you can really see the pixels. But yeah as we go up in power and resolution the graphical returns are diminishing. Just look at ps5 vs ps4 games. Theres definitely a noticeable difference but the delta isnt very wide. Also 8K used in conjunction with something like TAA, that's way too expensive today but in 10 years? We'll be at a point where aliasing is no longer a concern. It all depends on one's eyes too. I know plenty of gen X'ers that can't even tell a difference between 2k and 4k. Im not aware of any games on PC that can even output at 8K AND feature 8K textures. So aside from helping with aliasing there's no real benefit because games aren't being made with textures that benefit from that high of a resolution. Once it starts getting pushed though I'm sure the difference will become much more noticeable.

I'm with Ollie. Half Life 2 looked AMAZING! Faces and textures looked so much better than anything I'd seen. I was hugging walls just to look at the detail of them bricks. The other game was GTA 4. Just the scale of Mew York with so many NPCs wandering around. The other game is DOA 2. In comparison to Tekken, it looked so much better than Tekken 3 or TT

Regarding the popularity of lower fidelity monitors on PC, I recently learned the really highly competitive players on games like CS actually use the lowest graphics possible and huge FPS counts, mostly to reduce the “noise” and detail on the image so they get also the maximum amount of response and visibility.

I disagree with Alex that the PC adapter doesn't give PC owners a reason to buy the PSVR2. The display on the PSVR2 is better than the meta quest, and if you buy a PSVR2, you suddenly have the ability to play VR games on the PS5 if you either already have a PS5 or may get one in the future. For those reasons, I think the PC adapter makes the PSVR2 the best value VR headset on the market by a mile.

It's system requirements are not very high, actually thought it might have a better PC outing than we think.. The the folks seem to be very PC centered, and that's definitely a Chinese thing as well, keep in mind the console market on a technical level didn't exist until a few years ago in China. It's hard to say, but believe it or not.. It is possible for a developer to focus on a PC release, and worry about a console release later.. it's just not very common and, as we saw from cyberpunk it is also a crime against humanity lol. Fortunately those are lower standards to achieve I guess for these developers, whereas PC users are just used to it.. I feel like there was more of a chance for a better PC release from this game, then from most games given the circumstances, but also there is the chance that there's just bad on both ends, given that they are a very small team and they are using very new technology, and if my understanding is correct they are a very new team as well so it's you know.. that could be both better and worse at the same time. Just thinking of some of the low budget unity games out there, the idea of having a only a low medium and high option for the graphics, especially in a game engine that has no cvars, not even a hacky way to try to fix the variables that are set on the tool level for the distributable output.. and yet we do.. I used to be mad at unreal for its default options being so stupid.. But my God, it can be so much worse lol at the very least there are multiple options by default.. and at the very least there are cvars, and if albeit a much more completed and stupid process in order to achieve results from them, and things like unreal unlocker should never have to exist but I'm glad it does.. There's a mental process with a lot of modern devs where this thing just doesn't even enter the head space, but if anybody is going to probably have that headspace, it would be people that have been stuck in the DIY PC, stuck on internet cafe get what you get culture from China where you kind of have to be a little bit hacky in general just to get into gaming in the first place on the PC, especially in a in a Western and modern sense.

Kinda not the point since your'e talking about games here. But still surprising that no one said anything about who he was. Especially since I would argue Shawn Ashmore is much less well known.

I can totally relate to John's moment with the waterfall in Unreal, what an incredible jump in visuals that game was. Lacking a 3dfx card back when the game came out, i had to play it in software mode in 320x240 (or x200?) pixels. And it still looked better than all other games i had. The lighting, procedural animated textures, fog effects, it was all on a totally different level than what i experienced before.
