[Corrections posted 10 hours after upload]: Well we said at 38:30 that we probably made some errors somewhere and y'all would point them out in comments. Y'all did, so here's two corrections. In the video we say the Shiren the Wanderer sub-series began on Satellaview (referring to 1995's BS Shiren the Wanderer: Save Surala). Correction: it actually started with 1995's Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer on Super Famicom. We also said Metal Slader Glory's cartridge was 8 megabytes. Correction: it was actually 8 megabits, which is equal to only 1 megabyte. Apologies for errors.

- Shows video of an old build of a game we've never seen before. - People ask him to dump the files to preserve it and so others can play it. - He leaves, deleting accounts and becoming unreachable. That's the worst part of video game preservation, is when someone is just unwilling to do it. My guess is he didn't want to share because he's the one that spent something for it (in this case, other games), but he had to know what he was getting into when he shared the information online. Either that or the footage was faked and he didn't want to be called out for it.

it really could go three ways: as you say, unwilling because they just wanted to show off, but cuts all ties so as not be bothered. just wanted to show off, but it was fake so they cut all ties so as not be bothered. 3rd option? want to get attention, had anxiety from the kind of attention, cut all ties so as not be bothered.

@@jesusramirezromo2037I definitely like the idea of preserving games, but I think collectors are probably correct that games are more valuable if nobody has dumped the files. It was made worse by the 1997 film including shots that were obviously intentional homages to The Lion King - not that any of these "researchers" bothered to distinguish, and treated all Jungle Emporer adaptations as a giant monolith that emerged in the 60's. Ugh.

I can’t help but imagine that if the N64 DD made it overseas, it’d probably face ridicule due to it still not having much data. I could see the N64 port of RE2 and Conker’s Bad Fur Day being released on there if it did come over there. What with both games being 64 MB.

For multiplats games, the extra space would have been a huge advantage, even if it wasn't on a par with the CD. Many N64 multiplats suffer in 16MB cartridges at best, 64MB seems huge by comparison, albeit, some shorts loading times.

It isn't discussed in the video but the DD was intended to be much more than a "mail-order only addon." It got reduced to that after YEARS of delays and game cancellations/cartridge ports. 0:46 If you've never heard of Xevious - that was de facto the first scrolling shooter as we understand it nowadays. There were shmups before it, but all of them worked more like Space Invaders - even if they had scrolling backgrounds, your ship and enemies were fixed on screen (or games were very peculiar, like Defender or Zaxxon). All of the mechanics existed before, but Xevious was the first game to put all the pieces together, into the genre we now recognize with games like Gradius, Touhou or Ikaruga.

Hal is extremely tight lipped about Kirby GameCube. There's mention of it in the Iwata Asks for Kirby Return to Dream Land, in which the team reveals they worked on THREE 3D Kirby games before finally starting Return to Dream Land. Masahiro Sakurai's video on Kirby Air Ride also reveals that he wasnt initially supposed to be involved with that game but had to step in because the team was struggling. I wouldn't be surprised if Hal struggled in general after Sakurai left, especially since the director of Dream Land 2, 3, and 64 appears to have left around the same time.

These videos are amazing, i'm always eager to watch when they are published, knowing more about how games are made sometimes is more fun than playing them. I remember reading many magazines about games, and in few of them there was a prototype of a jurassic park game that came out on PC in 1993, it had the baby rex from the novel, and aparently you could kill the rex with a super gun, in the files from the AGA version of the game you still can dig assets from the prototype.

The n64dd is kinda sad, like they put so much riding on it that it makes me wonder why the n64 even used cartridges at all, and not only the floppy disks. I wonder how things would have been if the n64DD was the main way to play games on it and not just an add-on.

@@polycube868 The reasons behind the DD's delays are covered in this video's part 2. To answer your question though -- no probably not, it likely would've come out in '97 at the latest.

Cartridge is faster though; games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time would be quite different on floppy disk. The Expansion Pak would also be a requirement for any game to reduce the load from the floppy. Funnily enough, without the 64DD, games like Animal Crossing and Majora's Mask wouldn't even exist, as they track the progress of the game in real time. The fact that these games work on a cartridge the way they do is fascinating.

The interesting thing about Kimba and Lion King is, if you actually compare the two franchises, they don't share any similarities at all. There was some inspiration, Simba being named after Kimba (though Simba might have been a word that meant something else in the culture Lion King was adapted from, which Kimba might've been named after too) but the Lion King movie and Kimba are two completely different things. The pictures and stuff you see on the internet comparing the two are actually greatly misinformed and take scenes from Kimba completely out of context (and from projects that came out after Lion King) to make the comparisons. If you actually watch Kimba, you realize that it is absolutely nothing like Lion King.

Bro, they literally were going to name Leo Simba when dubbing the show but then they never did because, and I quote, "that's just too generic" since it was the Swahili word for lion.

WOW! Randomizing content per game copy based on the cartridge/disk ID is a huge idea! That could be pulled off today and use either such an ID or that of your user account to make every copy different, but each playthrough of the same cartridge would stay the same. Imagine talking to someone about the game and you start arguing about some detail until you realize it really was different for you! We could finally have personalized copies of Mario 64 😂😂

It was essentially a 386, but you bought a zip drive for it (instead of a CD-rom or a bigger/extra HDD). But no software support, or games, or OS (you could run an entire business on Win3/95/98), and you couldn't pirate the games. There wasn't even cover discs on magazines, so you could try out game demos or add heaps of cool stuff to games/ programs. In 1999. This means there was 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium pro, Pentium 2 and Pentium 3's out by then. We're not talking a generation behind the consumer cutting edge, we're talking about a decade or so. It just wasn't worthwhile spending $90 to upgrade an already underpowered console, when PlayStation already did graphics better (and had demo discs), the PS2 was just around the corner, and the creative crowd would rather use some kind of computer (even a really old one) for that stuff. And you could get just enough low-end creative stuff on a PS1 for the price of a few memory cards, that you'd use for gaming anyway. (There may also have been a bit of "buyer beware" savvyness after stuff like the Mega-CD, etc, being essentially useless peripherals. It's a very similar narrative. Nintendo did exactly what Sega did, but different! And when they already had a perfect example of why it's a don't). For creative stuff, you could get an old 386 from a garage sale/ hand-me-down (they were over a decade old by 1999) for about the same price as a N64+DD, except you'd also get Neopaint/Paint Shop Pro, Fractint, Povray, Qbasic, a tracker/looper, a writing program, and a mouse/keyboard, all for free. And they'd blow away any creative stuff you could ever do on an N64DD. As well as God alone knows how many shareware/ demo disc/ pirated games/ programs to play with for the next few years. You could even emulate a SMS/ NES, and with enough frame skip, a Genesis/ SNES on it :) Might have had a bit more upfront cost (about $400-450 instead of $290 for an N64+DD), but the first 10 shareware games/ programs (or ROMs) would make it even. Releasing "Now with a Zip-disk drive!" in 1999, just didn't cut it. Not even for consoles. And yes, we had game mods back then too. Lots of them. Even on shitty-old-computers.

If it was a success, and there were N64DD cover discs on Nintendo Power or whatever, it would have been so cool.... But Zip disks were just too expensive compared to CDs or Floppies, that you couldn't really use them as throwaway promotional material, even if you just chucked +2-3$ on the price of a magazine for it. Maybe they could have done an annual or a quarterly, with a big bunch of cool stuff in it, and kids could save up for it? Don't know. In a different timeline, it could have been awesome. I'm just glad I grew up as a PC lad, that played PS1 games with my mates. Back in 1998, I bought a slab of beer, a bottle of rum, and two different PS1 mags (I've never even owned a PS1 until recently), just so we'd have stuff to do over that weekend. Nintendo has never made memories like that. Even if you were 8yrs old, instead of 18yrs old at that time, you couldn't cry/ bitch/ moan to you dad to buy a magazine for a Nintendo. There was no play-time from them. In retrospect, I'm surprised it didn't take off in Japan, but I would understand why. There is nothing better than the television/ console game babysitter for about $10 total cost per month. I had a SMS when I was that age. Similar "expensive to produce free babysitting content" problems. I'm almost certain that's why they tried to push me into PC use as early as possible. Your parents could pretend that "maybe you need it for school these days, computer skills are important!", whilst being happy that you spent time with your friends (pirating and playing games that they didn't have to pay for). Mind you, in the 94-99 era, we didn't have a lot of Internet (but we did have some), so you'd rent console games and movies back then. Unfortunately, that business model also doesn't work for the DD, because data storage on Zip-disk would have become weird.

Fair point but the "drop you in a field with nothing but a stick" was referring to Mario Artist, which potential 64DD buyers could see wasn't anything like Minecraft. If the 64DD had Minecraft as a launch title, I imagine things would've gone differently.

@DidYouKnowGamin new project idea: compile every announcement and trailer you can possibly scrounge up from spaceworld in the 64/early GameCube era. All known spaceworld coverage from about 1996 through the end, 2001. If you’re ambitious you could do the entire shows history, but either way I expect it to be documentary-length. Perhaps collaborate with NoClip or another gaming museum/preservation group? Just some thoughts. I’d love to see it. Spaceworld sounds almost mythical and it would be nice to have a full narrative of what it truly was for Nintendo. Perhaps even in comparison to E3 and Treehouse events that they’d eventually be known for. I’m getting into ambitious territory but it’s too tantalizing an idea to let off. If I had the time, resources, or video editing knowledge, I’d be doing it myself, but alas I am but a hobbyist gaming historian.

11:24 I wonder if they made that statement based on the SGI Onyx performance rather than an actual devkit for the N64, as at that time the final specs of the console were not yet known. Rare started development of Goldeneye on the SGI Onyx and they said that the actual N64 devkit could render polygons faster than the Onyx. 13:12 Ironically, the main reason why Ocarina of Time moved its development from the 64DD to a cartridge was because the disk couldn't read the amount of motion capture data for Link fast enough.
