I think of it like this. If I buy a pizza, whether I want to eat it, or wear it as a fricking hat, at the point of purchase that is my business. If a company sells a product they have to be prepared that it is up to the customer to do as they wish with said product, as long as they are not copying said product and selling it or making profit from their IP them there should be no issue. Not for profit mods are fan tribute and furthers enjoyment and their sales of current and future products.

The only way they are acting could make sense slightly is if they have plans to remaster or remake those games. Even then that is a stretch. All they do is give themselves a bad image and name and hardcore fans that may likely have bought their remaster or remakes will just say no. Real fans would have bought a quality remaster or remake, regardless of mods and enjoying the old games. Also it encourages money to be spent on the old game as well and prolongs enjoyment. The only threat to their franchise is themselves turning on the people who gave them success. What weird behaviour and lack of vision.

While I don't play inverted, the best explanation for the mentality behind it I've ever heard was that you're controlling the characters torso - up is to learn forward, down is to lean back. Imagining the motion of walking up to a deep pit and looking down it almost feels mentally like you're pushing forward to look down the pit, whereas when you're done looking down the pit you pull back away from it.

As usual, pleasure listening to you guys. I used to have weaker PC that often couldn't do stable 60 fps in many somewhat demanding games and back then i also didn't have VRR monitor, so my solution was to create a custom resolution with a lower refresh rate for my monitor, i actually had set of them, like 40Hz, 45, 50. And i would choose them when gaming depending on what my PC could handle and yea, i do remember that difference between 30 and 40 was pretty big, i'd say huge even, games felt much smoother.

15:13 i like how we are slowing going back to the old days. SSDs are like cartridges and everything is accelerated with a co processor.
@itsjusterthought79413 жыл бұрын
No it's not like the old days. SSD is not equal to a cartridge. The cartridge was media memory. The SSD is main memory. Memory gets smaller and faster the closer you get to the processor. Media storage>>mass storage>>RAM>>level 3 cache>>level 2 cache>>level 1 cache>>registers>>processor. That chain of events is designed to make best use of storage size vs latency. The idea that you can remove RAM from the equation because you lack fast data throughput and stream SSD data direct to the GPU is a just a short term fudge. Yes current SSD is faster than last gen RAM, but it is slower than current gen RAM. Great for playing old games in higher quality (Game Pass), but no good for cutting edge future innovations.

I really don't understand why people struggle to understand 40fps on 120hz TV's Most TV's are 60Hz so it refreshes 60x a second. At 30fps, the screen refreshes twice (shows the same frame twice) for every frame - at 60, its a new frame every screen refresh. You could have 20fps - a frame is shown for 3 screen refreshes. A 120hz TV, at 40fps will show the same frame for 3 screen refreshes, at 30fps, you get the same image over 4 screen refreshes and 60fps, you get 2 screen refreshes per frame. Variable refresh rate means that the screen 'refreshes' every time a new frame is sent to the TV. Its not 'fixed' at 60 or 120hz - its matched to the frame rate so if you have 57fps, you TV is operating at 57hz to match. Because the frame rate and refresh rate are matched (or a factor of), you don't get screen tear or judder. That's why consistency is key - especially with displays with fixed refresh rates

The intel talk about "DXR 1.1 style" means the shader handles the path tracing branching logic in something like a compute shader, where ray queries are used to cast individual rays inline with the compute shader. The "DXR 1.0" style means you use the DXR recursive ray tracing system with all the shader binding table, ray gen shaders, etc. The 1.0 style means the hardware handles branching and recursive calls instead of software, which gives hardware a chance to shuffle around and sort rays / calls to achieve greater performance. On some platforms (especially current RDNA implementation), a software approach may achieve higher performance by doing the scheduling or sorting in software (by the game engine essentially), but this may not always be the case if hardware has the scheduling capabilities. This is probably what Intel means here, they want developers to utilize the hardware's ray scheduling

Regarding the cross generation question and direct storage... One thing we need to keep in mind is that this technique is primarily used to enable larger quantities memory to a limited memory setup. If you look at the PC space a lot of normal PCs these days have ~8GB-16GB VRAM + 16GB up to 32GB DDR4 RAM... even if you have a slow 2.5" SSD and initial loads are a bit longer, streaming engines can utilize PCs RAM as a middleman instead of direct storage. (which the consoles cannot) and DDR4 RAM is in fact faster memory than PS5s SSD. :) DirectStorage is cool tech, and will work wonders for consoles. However, PCs can always power through these things since they are constructed with a split memory structure.

Non-inverted people control the their line of sight in real life, AKA 'camera angle', with their face. Inverted controller people do it with their whole head/skull. (front of face Look down is down, back of skull tilts down when looking up.) -- I used to always play non-inverted, but my older brother and most of his friends would all play inverted, when we would being doing death-pass sharing a game (person plays, dies, hands controller to next person) I'd be the youngest in the room and the only one putting the controller back to non-inverted and they have to switch it back. Peer pressure, as in my brother literally sitting on me to take my turn, eventually made me learn how to play inverted.

On the topic mentioned by John of VRR at frame rates below 40fps, it actually works perfectly on my Gigabyte G27Q monitor since it supports Low framerate compensation (LFC). Sure, the frame rate naturally starts to look a bit choppy once you get below around 45fps, but frame time consistency remains great even as you go towards 30fps with LFC. I have found that one reason people might have a bad experience with LFC is that if a game does not support arbitrary frame rates (e.g. Sekiro is capped to 60fps maximum), then LFC does not work. In other words, LFC does not work in Sekiro if the frame rates drops under 50fps or so.

1:10:59 I don't have a problem with the "if ever" comment, especially with respect to the current console generation. PC games are still being designed for HDDs, even though everyone should be gaming on SSDs at least by now. I find it unreasonable to assume that PC games will be designed for PS5-level tech within the next five years. We *might* get Direct Storage within that time frame, but let's be honest with ourselves, M$ hasn't even figured out HDR yet and that's a last-gen technology. The reason I like it is because of response times, 60hz OLED compares and IMO beats LCDs at 90hz, even 120hz in terms of motion resolution. Every phone I've ever had in the past 10 years except 2 have been OLED, and I've never had an issue with burn in with them, my Galaxy S only died last year and the screen was A1 besides broken glass. It only takes some common sense to keep them in good condition, don't leave them on max brightness all the time! My B8 OLED spends 95+% of the time in standard mode with 0% backlight, it's still plenty bright enough to use with the curtains open, and Ill leave a browser open for 48 hours at a time, with KZbin, Ebay, Google, literally 100s of all those static tabs lol

I’d prefer if we didn’t bother acknowledging the fanboys. If they fight over hardware they likely don’t understand the technology you’re discussing. People who do understand recognize how silly they sound. It’s definitely no majority.

Yeah i agree, i was thinking exact same thing. DF did a good job explaining this multiple times. They did justice to the topic, you can't change everyone's mind or make the understand

I play inverted x and y. Mainly because that's how games were mainly on the ps2 where I played my first games with camera control. I find it annoying when I cant invert or just invert one axis (recently with the ME legendary Edition)

They are often missing…..Oled. Yeah where are the manufacturers on providing 27-42” Oled monitors? I don’t have the desktop real estate for a 48” Oled, not only that but sitting 2 feet away from that is just crazy hard on your eyes I would think. Great discussion guys!

Yes Unreal Engine for film production is a thing, they shot Star Wars The Mandolorian using UE tools man you just opened my eyes i feel like backgrounds/green screens for UE will get better and better and give more access to "high quality film sets" to more people and indie productions!

Alex like dozens of others is correct on the inverted vertical axis. The first first-person-perspective game I played was Elite.

It's not the SSD, it's the I/O pipeline including dedicated 9 Zen 2 cores decompression chipset which makes the SSD capable of transferring data as fast as dual channel DDR3 RAM.

If you’ve bought a legitimate copy of a game you should be able to do whatever you want with it, modding needs to stay.

i still use inverted look because of games like x-wing, tie fighter, and descent before the FPSs of the time (namely doom and "doom-clones") had the ability to look up/down. it was only natural to use the flight stick model of looking up/down in games like quake.

The mod takedown does make sense in a twisted way as the most likely type of mod for older titles is graphics mods and the like along the same lines as a remaster: which are doing quite well. The main difference is that the remasters that are worth anything are hilariously better than any graphics mod I've seen.
