To answer Q2, I hated LCD with a passion when it was introduced. They looked terrible, washed out with awful ghosting. LCD has really only started to meet my standards in the last few years. I remember saving up 1,400$ when I was 14 and wanting to go and get a Sony CRT(1080i). My parents forced me to buy a Samsung insisting I get the "new" technology(23" cost like 1,100$ back then.) Let's just say that I sold it inside of a few months, doubled down on cutting lawns and walking dogs in the neighborhood to get a CRT before they were phased out. These days, I'm happy with Oled/QD-Oled until Microled becomes the norm. I just have a huge intolerance to blooming and slow pixel response. Very few LCDs are adequate for my tastes.

The gamelists on PS5 are fairly useless, being tucked away in the library rather than being right out on the dashboard. By the time I'm heading to the library, the UI has already failed at making it easy to find the game I want, and I'll probably already be using the voice command instead of the library. Hi DF - Really grateful to you for answering my question. I was amused by Richard's comment that it was a short question but a long question. Often, I seem to use one word when I could use twenty! Plenty of food for thought, anyway. I will probably just hang on and see what the next generations have to offer. By the way, my memory is 3600MHz, so that shouldn't be a problem. As to the reason I mentioned the benchmark rather than the performance in game - as Alex expected, stuttering in-game was in fact more severe, often dipping into the mid-40s. The performance essentially rendered the game unplayable, so I have spent longer fiddling with the benchmark than actually playing it - so I haven't actually had a great deal of experience in the actual game itself. And finally, yes ... Watch Dogs: Legion! If only I could get the name right.

Regarding transition to LCDs... When people were starting to buy those Samsung LCD HDTVs for their new Xbox 360s, lots of people would complain about ghosting on them. 08:00 The PS5 Controller has a notorious wide spread issue that die L2 and R2 Buttons don't work correctly anymore. I had this problem after 4 Weeks of ownership (not even 50 hrs played on the console) There is a spring inside to "push it out" and if the spring is bend a little wrong in the factory it doesn't push it out enough, which means that you are slightly but constantly pushing the button which has 2 problems a) it shortens the battery liftime / you need to recharge more often b) in some games you are "pressing the button" without actually pressing it, which means that you do stuff in the game you don't want to

Regarding the switch from LED to OLED, one thing that gets worse doing that switch is low framerate content because of the instant pixel response time. I recently tried to play Far Cry 5 on PS5 on my LG C1, and it's still locked at 30 fps there. I say tried cause it was so stuttery that it was genuenly unplayble, while I remember playing it on my old LED TV just fine. There are some games that have a really good motion blur implementation like RDR2 where, even tho it's 30 fps, it's still pretty smooth looking. I'm playing it right now and you can see a bit of stutter when turning around fast, but it doesn't bother me much. In general tho, I think LEDs are better for low frame rate content than OLEDs. Of course OLEDs are better in basically every other regard including 60fps content, but since a lot of current gen games include 30fps 4k modes, having that 30fps mode being unplayable unless the game itself has good motion blur is kind of a bummer. One example was Horizon Forbidden West, which was the first game I played on my OLED. At the time I bought the game, it still had those aliasing problems in the 60fps mode, while the 30fps 4k mode looked perfectly fine. I of course wanted to play the 30fps mode cause the aliasing issues were really obvious, but no matter how much I forced myself to use it, telling myself that i would get used to it, it just was so stuttery that it was unplayable for me.
@mysteriousm12 жыл бұрын
I had the exact same experience, thought I was going insane when I was playing TLOU Part II again on my C1 for the first time. Have you tried using VRR? I played Horizon Forbidden West in 40fps mode with VRR and the lower frametimes really helped and made it feel like 60fps

I don't think its unusual for a receiver to reject 1440p, its part of the video chain after all so has its own requirements for what it can decode the audio from then passthrough the video signal. My receiver doesn't support it, big surprise, its a Sony. So their policy of sticking to standard TV resolutions seems to still apply there, even if they loosened it on the PS5. This is why eARC is so useful, my receiver only supports HDMI 2.0 so I feed the consoles into the TV directly and use eARC to pass the audio back to the receiver. Also means you can tweak the picture settings per input, keep the receiver HDMI port at the best settings for TV/Movies rather than games. Personally during the CRT to LCD transition, LCDs looked better. I didn't realise but I've always have visual migraines, so a flickering screen was uncomfortable and higher resolutions on the desktop were blurry, so LCD was more usable for the desktop. Also black levels weren't great on affordable CRTs, they were only good on high-end which is what people chase today. Every CRT I've owned would either be washed out or crush blacks, you couldn't get the picture quality people talk about of CRTs.

@1:02:50 Goddamn nothing but problems with eARC for me since getting a C1 for living room. It sounds great in theory, but based on how many other people I seen dealing with the same issues it must be super inconsistent. Short version, I can never get it connected in a way where it properly recognizes all apps, and devices. It might work in netflix at first, but then one day it just refuses to pass an audio signal to the receiver, no matter what I do. Then I reset everything and get all apps running, but now it doesn't pull audio from the PS4. Maybe that decides to work one day, but now it decides the PS4 surround sound setting is actually in stereo. It could be that its not compatible with my 5 year old Yamaha receiver, even though eARC is back-compat with ARC. Who knows. It pains me to do it, but I just reverted back to an optical cable for output to my receiver. The problems seem almost random, works in certain apps one day, but then not another day, But then might start working again the next day.

My take on the CoD situation is that neither Phil or Jim are necessarily in the right Spencer champions this supposed pro-consumer ideology Xbox has about not taking games away from players yet both of their latest acquisitions were precisely done to build up their exclusives library (especially in Bethesda's case since Starfield, Redfall and TESVI are not coming to PS at all), and not to mention Xbox essentially began the whole trend of timing certain games to be exclusives on their platforms during the 360 gen. Sony also comes off as hypocritical arguing the terms of the deal when they're going full throttle on similar practices especially with the PS5 when it comes to certain third parties (Square Enix is a huge example). I say this as someone who invests in both ecosystems regularly. It's just a conversation of "he said, she said" at this point

Yeah I grew up during the transition to LCDs, loved the look they have and the how lite they are, but didn't notice much about image quality. However I did get a TV late into when CRTs were dying out and that was one of the best looking displays I ever saw. The colors were so vibrant, the blacks were pure black, and it even had HDMI ports (though it was standard definition). Even had access to digital channels from my provider I'd never had before. That TV unfortunately didn't last too long though and ended up getting an LCD to replace it as CRTs were truly gone at this point. Can definitely say though, the main reason people didn't notice the transition looking poor is purely because analog cable TV looks terrible. That display looked so much better using digital video and digital channels compared to standard definition analog TV channels. On the basic channels I couldn't tell as much how the LCDs just look worse as those channels had some static, the image was sometime interlaced, etc.

I retired out from MS 6 years ago. The decision making from that point on has been confusing as hell to witness from the outside. It's like it's just internal chaos and constant rollover. Too many contractors versus employees on too many teams. You can't build a viable long-term term product that requires constant updates with core people shuffling in and out of the active project almost every single day.

Seriously I would love MGS Remaster(s) / Remake(s)-even if it's just MGS3. As someone who played MGS (1998) on PS1 for the first time in 2022, I have become a FAST fan of the series, and it pains me all the more to know Konami's behavior towards traditional games. The world would be a better place with a redeemed Konami!

We are similar! I played MSG1 for the first time in 2020, instant fan! I've played through MSG3, all classics, my favorite so far is MSG2. Getting ready for RPCS3 and MSG4 soon! But I'd definitely replay a MSG3 remake!

Jimbo Mattrick claims Phil Spencer went public with this but it was actually the UK CMA posting on Twitter about their concerns and how it could hurt Sony. That's disturbing and totally unprofessional for the UK government.

Speaking of Paul from Paul's Hardware, when I first saw his channel years ago, I thought he was Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit lol (how I remembered his face from the early 2k)

While running my PS5 through a Samsung Q950A soundbar, the PS5 would only test 60Hz SDH and HDR. If I plugged directly into my TV, it would test 60Hz and 120Hz.

Why does "shader compilation" exist now, when it doesn't seem to have been an issue in the past? Did the amount of streaming and asset use just finally reach within the last generation a point that allowed for shader compilation issues to manifest themselves?

Regarding your take on horror games and black levels: By default, newly installed NVidia drivers have set Dynamic Range to Limited for some time, which chops off 16 levels of brightness at the top and bottom end and compresses the image into this reduced spectrum, likely to accommodate for bad black levels on a lot of LCD screens. I would be interested in knowing: - what percentage of players have this set to Limited or Full? - are there performance differences? - how common is it for a screen to be so bad it needs this set to Limited? - are there games that are developed with Limited or Full in mind, in terms of their art style?

Remember the Saturn, where you only had to remove the flap for the MPEG cartridge slot to also get access to the battery? Yeah, it died quicker as it was also responsible for keeping saves (stupid design if you didn't own a memory card to copy them over) but still... Got here a 286 Commodore Laptop with a flap for direct CMOS battery access. Another Pentium II one where you can easily remove the keyboard with the CMOS battery being right underneath. And a Pentium 166 MMX one where you have to take the whole device apart...
