Thanks for answering my question! I did, in fact, mean 100 nits. Sadly, projectors generally can only reach about 100 nits (give or take) after calibration. That's why I put HDR in quotes. They can accept an HDR signal but have to tonemap it way down. That's why HDR on projectors is a little misleading. It can still look fantastic, but nothing like OLEDS. I also think the Switch looks amazing on my Epson 5050UB. Mario Kart is a blast at 140". But I generally agree that OLED quality with HDMI 2.1 provides a superior experience than the projector. Cheers!

It's all FOV (field of view) - there's a calculator out there that will show you the angle for any screen size and distance. A 55 inch at 5 feet distance is the same as a 110 inch screen at 10 feet. They are both 43.6 degrees which is IMAX level. Your eyes can only focus on 30 degree angle and I believe that's a bit high (it's substantially better in the middle as there is a higher density of cone cells) but I'm no expert. I have a 55 inch from 11-12 feet that yields a 20 degree view. It's ridiculously comfortable for me to see the entire soccer match, tennis court, and when I play games, I see everything. I'll upgrade to a 65 inch but I'm not sure I really want to do that. When you watched this video, do you maximize the window? I usually keep it on the smaller side on a 27 inch and maximize it on a 15 inch laptop. Maxed out on a 27inch, it's a FOV of 2.2 which overwhelms me. A 130 inch projector from 10 feet away is 50 degrees so it's about the same as a 27 inch from 2 feet away. When you work do you see the entire screen? The point of a movie and a game is a bit different than working.
@LukeBenMBay
@LukeBenMBay Жыл бұрын
I game on a 120 inch screen, sitting 12 ft from it, and it's awesome. I know it's theoretically the same as being 6.5 ft away from a 65" TV, but I tried it with my TV and I swear it's not the same feeling. Also, being away from the screen makes the surround sound (and Atmos if you've got it) really surround you. You have to try it to believe it. The bigger is clearly the better for me. So much more immersive. But I agree with Alex that 30 fps games tends to be noticeably choppy, especially FPS games.
@blackcaesar8387
@blackcaesar8387 Жыл бұрын
@@LukeBenMBay This! the immersion of a projector screen is not just about how it fills your view, but also about how it fills the space. Since I bought a projector 2 years ago with a 120-inch screen. I have barely touched my 55-inch. Not even for stuff like youtube. But the sad truth is that if you are a videophile (which the people at DF obviously are), you will always want OLED quality over a big screen. I want both, but as long as a 100-inch OLED costs as much as a small SUV, then it's projectors for me.

I've been gaming on a projector for over 10 years in a dedicated movie room. I just recently increased the size from 100 to 120 and love it. I sit roughly 17-18ft away. My next big purchase will be the JVC DLA-NP5 supporting 4k 120 with hdmi 2.1. I definitely enjoy it but also understand everyone has unique circumstances and performance targets. 🙂

Insomniac has the luxury of building for a fixed and closed system when designing their game. Also, Insomniac is just coming off a 2 year period where they put games and performance options at level and quality that makes most studios look like they have no idea what they're doing. If I remember correctly, FFXIV 1.0 (the version that was shut down) used Crystal Tools, the same engine used in FF13. Unfortunately, a limitation of the engine is that it can't display more than 8 characters at the same time, making it particularly unsuitable for an mmo. It also relied heavily on scripting, which made it easier to implement features, but dramatically affected performance. (source: /noclip documentary ep1) 2.0 uses a subset of the luminous engine, remember that the game that morphed into FF15 started several years earlier as a FF13-2 (another game in the FF13 world) so luminous was in development from 2011-12, when ffxiv 2.0 was in active development.

Also - the trailer showed black child handprints on a wall in the very beginning - meaning, well, there will be weird stuff in the game - but no one really doubted that anyway. Happy to see the game announced, the first one was an incredibly deep journey into all states of the human paradox.

With the $70 price tag I ask my older gamers how much did SNES games cost back in 93? I can recall paying $79.99 for Super Street Fighter Turbo, $75 for Super Metroid, $75 for KI on the SNES. The reason being cartridge cost to manufacture. That made sense, however modern times I honestly think it's a money grab. They brag about how new game engines allow them to quickly make high quality assets but somehow game development time has increased. Not only increase, they lunch in a buggy state taking two years to fix (CP2077). It's not that visual, everybody wants to build this big open world epic crap that takes 5 frigging years to develop. Game developer should focus more on creating procedure level deployment systems.

Onto Microsoft, all the developers they've purchased since 2018 and they have more games launch exclusively on Sony systems than their own. You have games like Hell Blade 2 announced years ago, shown off years ago and it's not out. Perfect Dark is probably a 2024 title if it doesn't get cancelled. Avowed is either a 2024 or 2025 title. State of Decay 3 shown off years ago and it's not out. By the time Forza 8 launches, it would have been almost 6 years between racing titles. Microsoft either have slowest, or laziest development teams I've seen with few exception. They're not managed well up until this point. I mean Rare Wild game is probably years away from release, and they missed an opportunity to make an awesome Battle Toad game. Rare should have been handling Perfect Dark instead start up team The Initiative which really isn't developing PD, the core of PD is being developed by Crystal Dynamics. Speaking of CD, another game company Microsoft could have purchased from Square Enix for cheap. KI sequel should have been out years and MS missed another opportunity to purchase Double Helix for cheap. A group with decent talent they let slip to Amazon. Is Fable 4 or Legend coming anytime soon? Game Show was a flat-out embarrassment with no titles to show. The talents at the Coalition is spending time cleaning up Halo Infinite which was developed by contractors and not 343I. The actually engine guy was a contractor who left the project. The actually 343I developers were left trying to figure out how to use the Slip space engine after the contractor left. I mean, what kind show are they running over there? The only thing their leaders are good for is good PR to distract from their lack of content to show. This worked in 2018, 2019, 2020 they could blame Covid, but 2022? Red Fall is another Back for Blood, Left for Day clone. Forza 8 looks good, but it's a racing game. Starfield premise is interesting, but it looks dated, looks like an advance Xbox 1X game from 2019.

Even then a £34.99 PS1 game purchased in 1996 would be £64.18 now adjusted for inflation. Bearing in mind PS1 games were made by teams of between 1 and 50 people in a very short turnaround and publishing/disk production costs were notoriously low on PlayStation. Now games are made by teams of hundreds over the course of 3-5 years. I'm not sure a £70 price tag is wholly unreasonable considering. I say this as someone who buys very few AAA games because I tend to no longer enjoy the experience they offer.

People really do downplay how quickly digital copies of games go on sale. It's not just the physical games that do so. Case in point: Just 8 months after the release of Horizon Forbidden West, I was able to get a digital copy if that game, for the PS5, for a few cents less than $40.00 from Eneba. (And a month after that, it went on sale for $40.00 on the PSN store itself.) I own a Digital PS5. (And though my Xbox Series X does have a disc drive, I am digital-only over there as well.) Digital deals are far more frequent and cheap than a lot of people give it credit for.
@yomamasohot6411
@yomamasohot6411 Жыл бұрын
No matter how often digital libraries go on sale they cannot be as frequent and as deep as the physical ones and there is a purely logical reason for it. 1) You become wholely dependent on one Seller so there's no competition for your money. 2) Physical retailers tend to put games on deep sale just to clear out any inventory so they can use the valuable shelf space for something else.

It's true that games have cost $60 for a long time, and that a price increase might be overdue. But please remember, that those $60 games in the Xbox360, PS3, PS2, etc. era was COMPLETE games - no paid for DLC's, no season passes, no content locked behind deluxe and ultimate editions, oh, and most games shipped in a finished and mostly bug-free state! The $60 price tag of then cannot be compared to the $60 price tag of today, with all this content being locked behind paywalls. It's fine to increase the base purchase price of games, but then give us all the content, and stop with all this paid DLC's, season passes, cosmetics, and all this nonsense.

I've always game-shared on PlayStation games, which I know is probably frowned upon from Sony but it saves you 50% on the initial price tag immediately at launch. No way to do that on PC cuz game-share on PC makes it so you both can't play that game at the same time which really defeats most of the purpose. A price increase on PC would probably make me wanna buy games EVEN less than before.

Theory on shader caching, higher ups wanted games to boot up right after installation. See game icon, click, game running. For consoles, no problems. But PC reveals the shortcomings of this approach.
