Yeah.. funny thing is, in my memory it was far better looking than the PS1, except the cutscenes. I played both versions on the same CRT TV, about 5 or 6 months apart and when running the N64 version with expansion pack installed it kinda blew me away how cleaner and sharper the game looked. I guess this video favors the PS1 version due to modern LCDs we are watching this on.. but on my classic 29" CRT tube back in the day, the PS1 was all pixelated as any PS1 game with character meshes morphing all over the place, pixelated backgrounds and the blood splash of zombie bites or gun shots were that huge pixelated mess.. N64 version looked smooth and sharp at the same time.. The blurrier backgrounds only make it look more movie like and smooth in a CRT TV.. the character were incredibly crispy at 480i with better models and more stable without all the morphing. The cutscenes were the only downside that was immediately noticeable but I was happy to see them anyway. The compressed voices were not noticeable unless you compare them like John did here.

The PS era was amazing, I just couldn't believe you could move around in a 3D environment in a videogame, it felt like a miracle compared to 2D gaming, even if some games were clunky and far from perfect it was just unbelievable. Watching the remake videos and its gorgeous graphics that today we take for granted it's quite impressive how technology and artistic work has evolved in gaming. I think the DreamCast version is the best overall (I love the VMU thing), but the N64 version will always be the one in my heart (and nightmares as a child)

1998 still remains probably my fav gaming year of all time. resident evil 2, metal gear solid, tenchu stealth assassins, crash bandicoot 3: Warped, Spyro the dragon, MediEvil, Duke Nukem Time to kill, Oddworld Abe's Exoddus. Man I wish we had years like that now... now we will be lucky to get 1 solid game per year. I miss the good old days :(

Time has not been kind to my memory of my PC gaming experiences--I could have swore the Windows 95 version of this ran better than it does, ha (it's not bad, just not as good as I remember). Great video as always! You've really been spoiling us these last few weeks with all these DF Retro entries.

After playing almost every version out there I can easily say the Dreamcast version is the best, closely followed by BioHazard 2 PC modded and on third is the excellent Gamecube version. Aside from those other versions are okayish as well :)

Why did you choose Dreamcast over PC?

IMO The PS1 will always be the best way to play RE2, as all the others seem to be judged by it's standard.

With current data compression tech such as Ogg Vorbis, PNG and H265 the game could be squeezed into even smaller size.
@Xilefian6 жыл бұрын
Compression formats aren't a silver-bullet. OGG, PNG and H265 require a chunk of CPU time to decompress, I do not think these would have been a smart choice on something like the N64 (if they were available). I expect the developers went with the best options available to them at that time (which in the N64's case would have been make-your-own-N64-format). The only reason OGG and PNG are acceptable these days is because we have powerful processors with lots of memory. H265 is a good candidate for modern hardware decoding, so that can even be offloaded these days.

HEVC is passion, HEVC is life. I compressed all my video files into this format. Lost no quality, but gained 2TB of space back. Now i want HEVC 2.0.....
@andrewsqual6 жыл бұрын
@@eiszapfenderwutendenwinde3233 And you play all those video files on a N64 or very similar spec hardware?
@pedrofelck6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but try to decode H265 on the PS1 hardware and you set the thing on fire

Ha, the strips mentioned in 10:10. I remember these, there were a ton of bugs in PC ports of PS1 games with prerendered backgrounds (FF7, RE1 etc.) where the 3D accelerator would actually "round down" the pixel count, causing a single vertical line of black pixels between strips when the backgrounds were filtered using hardware under certain configurations.

So does this mean the N64 version is the first console game to have dynamic resolution?
@ronindebeatrice6 жыл бұрын
No, tons of early games used different resolutions for menus.
@bobdeinterlace6 жыл бұрын
There's plenty Mega Drive and Super Nintendo games that do it too, mostly just higher resolutions in the menus though.
@paradoxzee68345 жыл бұрын
Yes you can call it that, a developer of the game did say how it calculate what resolution it will run on how many zombies and what type of zombies are on screen but the reason the item menu is 240p because it does not scale well to 480i.

No. The Xbox (2001) because John said that the game The Chronicles of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay used that technique in-game for the first time in gaming history to free GPU resources and handle better graphics than anything on that consoles of the era. Its present as a fragment of the Wolfenstein 2 Switch version analysis.

Quake for Sega Saturn or Resident Evil 2 for N64? Which is the more impressive port?
@pedrofelck6 жыл бұрын
RE2 without a doubt
@retroboy-fh1ji5 жыл бұрын
Saturn had more powerful hardware than playstation. It could handle a proper port of quake 2... after all, it can handle panzer dragoon saga, radiant silvergun, sonic r, virtua fighter 2, decathlete, last bronx and dead or alive. These were examples of the superiority of saturn's 2 cpu's architecture over the less powerful gte and mono cpu on ps1. Shenmue Saturn and Virtua Fighter 3 were supposed to push the console to the absolute limits overpassing the psx hardware. Powerslave, another game in both platforms is better on saturn because of mpre detail, graphics, content and lobotomy used both cpu & vdp's. The ps1 version had higher fps in some instances, but was drastically downgraded because was a port of a stronger console (sat).
