+Brother Ares That's odd. FreeSync on my setup has ZERO impact on performance. Okay, that's a little dishonest. Borderless Window mode becomes downright unplayable as some drivers have glitched the detection to make windowed games start FreeSync regardless (it's been fixed and unfixed across several drivers). Also, don't use VSync AT ALL when it's enabled. Are you sure you're using it right?

I find it rather hilarious and unfortunate that the 60 FPS operating Sega Saturn version was destroyed because of Carmack's hate for affine texture mapping yet was completely fine with it on the PlayStation seeing as it was its only method of rendering 3D games. Rational thinking at its finest.
@WeskerSega
@WeskerSega 7 жыл бұрын
It was sheer bad luck. Apparently, at the time the person in charge of supervising external conversions and giving the approval back at that time in id Software was John Romero, but just when that first Sega Saturn conversion tech demo with affine texture mapping arrived, John Romero was on holidays and it was John Carmack himself who did the task, and we all know what happened thanks to his idiocy and stubbornness (HE should have been the one to program it if he really wanted it that way, and see if he could have achieved a good conversion himself). John Romero has said since then that if it was him who would have supervised it, he would have given it his OK for sure.
@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 7 жыл бұрын
Well, I agree with his comment. Affine texture mapping DOES suck. - no idea why so many could stomach looking at it. (I HATED it in the 90's. The playstation was a system I avoided almost entirely just because of that one thing. And I'm pretty forgiving - I played games with low framerates, shadows turned off. No antialiasing. Really low resolutions. No dynamic lighting whatsoever... But affine texture mapping is one of the few graphical things most likely to put me off playing a game. Can't stand it.) But my own loathing for Affine texture mapping aside, yeah.... Inconsistent much? If it was such a crime, the Playstation version shouldn't have used it either.
@WeskerSega
@WeskerSega 7 жыл бұрын
This is not about what looks better or worse or what you could stomach or not by looking at it. This is about performance. And bringing the software rendered Doom and (specially) Doom II as such to the Sega Saturn proved to be a disaster for the hardware which was very complex to program for. The efficient solution for attempting a Sega Saturn FPS is clearly using a polygon renderer for the maps. Have you noticed what Alien Trilogy, Exhumed/PowerSlave and Duke Nukem 3D all do on the Sega Saturn? They use polygon renderers combined with sprites for objects/enemies and they all work like a charm, and it's worth mentioning the case of both Duke Nukem 3D and Exhumed/PowerSlave because these were originally sector based software rendered games on the PC (both used Ken Silverman's Build engine in fact) and when they made it to the Sega Saturn, both made the transition by being completely readapted to polygon rendered engines. Alien Trilogy was designed like that from scratch because that was a FPS designed with consoles in mind and it wasn't much later when it was actually converted to the PC. Then you have Hexen for the Sega Saturn, which still uses a sector based software rendered engine which actually manages better performance results than Doom but still it's not great, and even makes compromises to achieve that like sacrificing all the facing sprites of the enemies minus the front facing ones, similarly to what the 32X and SNES versions of Doom do. That game on the PlayStation is even worse in framerate performance than the Sega Saturn version and let's not talk about the PlayStation of Duke Nukem 3D which has similar bad results. Only very efficient coding could get these kind of memory intensive engines to work on consoles like the PlayStation and especially the complicated to program Sega Saturn so it should have been done the way it would have been better for the hardware. And it that required using affine texture mapping, then let it be that way. I'm sure it would have been a very nice version (like Duke Nukem 3D for the Sega Saturn is for example) and people would have a good grasp of it, much better than the disastrous released version has for sure.
@Carlixyz

And That's why psx wins & Sega Saturn Losed that generation... (well, that and Final Fantasy VII, and Metal Gear Solid and so on whatever.. )
@WeskerSega
@WeskerSega 7 жыл бұрын
No. Doom was a minor factor to that matter. Just the same as the PlayStation has a better version of Doom than the Sega Saturn, on the other hand, the Sega Saturn has better versions of Duke Nukem 3D and Hexen for example, plus a version of Quake that the PlayStation doesn't even have (yeah, PlayStation has Quake II, but that was a couple of years later when the Sega Saturn was already out of competition, Sega Saturn could also have it if the console had sell well). The other games you mention, Final Fantasy VII could indeed be seen as a factor, especially taking in mind that Square in its typical selfish behaviour of foolishness didn't want to know about anything outside the PlayStation (thank god at least Eidos Interactive managed to get PC ports of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII out of them). About Metal Gear Solid, it seems Konami wasn't reluctant to take the game to the console if the demand would have been enough and the console would have had a longer commercial lifespam not interrupted by the Dreamcast. There's several sources that confirm it could have happened, same as Resident Evil 2 which was in actual development and about to happen if not because in the end it was cancelled because Capcom rellocated its resources (AKA, Nextech which had developed the Sega Saturn version of Resident Evil and was doing the same with Resident Evil 2) to develop Resident Evil CODE: Veronica for the Dreamcast.

What still amazes me after all these years is how ahead of its time Doom was. I recently decided to play through a lot of PS1 era games for nostalgia sake and it was a painful experience.. 99% of games haven't aged well at all. Except Doom, which is still very playable, the engine, the gameplay, the music. Those devs are certainly genius. I'd say even in 2090 Doom will still be very playable. The gameplay is just perfect

What? Doom 64 is awesome and my true Doom 3.. but it doesn't push the N64 anywhere... It's not even close to show the console true potential. Doom 64 was an early game and dated on arrival by still using 2D sprites. Charming, but old tech. In the same year Turok and Goldeneye 007 were released and both games were far more advanced than Doom 64... still, the console show even greater potential in the years to come.

11:15 "Textures in the game were resized as 64x64". This is only meant for the floor/ceiling textures (which are anyway 64*64 on the original PC Doom too) but the video displays wall textures. As the OptiDoom developer, I know wall textures can still be of variables sizes. The ones that used to be 128*128 like the big door for example, remain 128*128. I did notice that some classic textures like Startan which used to be 128*128 (although there are some which might be 64*128) are sometimes reduced to 32*128 (but removed detail and made to tile properly on X) or 64*128. The wall textures are 4bpp (16 colors) but of course ever CEL texture can have it's own palette so it's own unique 16 colors compared to other walls nearby, so this is not a bad degrade on total. The floor/ceiling still remain 8bpp, because the software renderer over the CEL texture (CEL is still partially used but only as a canvas + the depth shading directly on CEL pixel processor) is much easier when it's 1 byte = 1 pixel.

I remember Doom being one of the first games I tried when I got my 3DO a couple of years ago. I was in shock and in pain, but also wondering why the music was so fucking good. If you have CFW there is. It's a good port of Doom but I don't remember if there's 3D support or not. Feels really good to control with the circle pad. Also, the original DS had a homebrew port that was really good, but sadly lacked music. The PSP also had a really good homebrew port essentially on-par with the PS3/Xbox 360 port.

You know what is sad? Romero was the guy in change to test Doom ports and to approve them but the problem is when they got the Saturn version Romero was on vacation so Carmarck was testing it. It gets even more sad, years later the programer of the game did meet Romero in a con and they had a convesation and Romero did say if he was testing the original Saturn vesion he would approve it

DSDuddles I hated texture warping as much as Carmack did. Even back then - It's one of the reasons the original playstation never impressed me. Looking at it always made me feel like the games were halfbaked. I hated the most popular system of the era precisely because of texture warping. It's one part of why I had an n64 instead. I did tolerate it briefly in some of the earliest PC 3d titles using software rendering, such as Descent or Terminal Velocity, (or earlier that that, magic carpet), but given a choice I did not like games that looked like that. I don't like Them in 2017, I didn't like them in 1996. I avoided the playstation because of it. Carmack really isn't alone in his disdain for affine texture mapping. OK, maybe people like me and him are the minority - the success of systems that did 3d that way seems to say so. But some of us DID care, and we found it incredibly obnoxious and painful to look at. When games using flat-shaded polygons like starfox and Virtua Racer seem less obnoxious to look at than fully texture mapped games, maybe, just maybe, you've taken a performance shortcut too many. Doing it properly does come at a price of course. Nothing demonstrates this better than the n64. It has perspective correct texture mapping, bilinear filtering and antialiasing. But if you were to rewrite the GPU microcode and change some settings you could get it to output graphics comparable to the PS1... And dumping all those extra image quality features would, by all accounts improve polygon throughput of the system nearly 5 fold. But boy would it ever look ugly.

actually, the reason why they had to remove the red cross on health packs is due to international law. the red cross represents medics on the battlefield and they are supposed to be protected. the international committee felt that the red cross appearing on things in video games and such diluted it's visual impact and could put medics in jeopardy on the battlefield. silly but it's true. it's a protected symbol. using it is actually a breach of international laws and treaties.

If I get the urge to play Doom, which is pretty often, I always go for the PS1 version. The inclusion of the moody lighting, the weapons and monsters from Doom 2 in Doom 1, the sometimes reworked for the better levels, the exclusion of the stupidly cheep Archvile, and that fantastically thick atmospheric score by Aubrey Hodges all make it my favorite version. My only gripes with it are that it lacks a save feature, and the final stage in Doom 2 is a massive step down from the PC version.

My computer teacher caught most of our computer class playing the game..ending with many of us kids (including me) getting put in detention. To make it funnier I attended a Catholic Elementary school, lol. SNES Doom was my first Doom, and I loved it, played the hell out of it. It wasn't until late '95 I actually saw the PC version for the first time at a friends house, that's when I realized I had a shit copy. Seeing the side-sprites for the first time was awesome. That was when I started to resent my SNES, couldn't wait to throw that shit in the trash and get a better system. Would be a long wait for the N64. Still play the hell out of PC version now, on a real 486DX4/125 with a decent 19" Trinitron-like monitor. Finally around '98 I got my hands on Doom 64, was disappointed, because it was so "different." I wanted "real Doom" and that wasn't it. I appreciate it now.
