Excellent! When comparing popular more affordable grinders it’s definitely helpful to compare not just the stock model but also what the performance and workflow can be like with a few commonly available mods and adjustments. In some cases a few mods can drastically improve the experience and it can totally change the relative value proposition when comparing against much more expensive higher end grinders, which is ] helpful and interesting for people making buying decisions.

I’ve got all those upgrades on my df64 but just wanna note that sometimes coffee beans can get caught between the top lip of the anti pop corn and bellows riffle. Especially if the beans are smaller. No biggie, can just flick them out with your finger or just use the bellows to push them out. Also one other mod I do have is the lid for the bellows. I use the cover for a pringles potato chip can. That way can see down into hopper. Learned that from CY Cafe Martella.

I just received my DF64 and it came with the dial ring indicator! I messaged the seller in Canada for something else and pointed out that they should indicate it comes with it since it's a cool feature. I purchased the DF64 a year ago and I have 3D printed everyone of the modification you mentioned and also the declumper modification that CY designed with the plastic stencil. In addition I upgraded the burrs to the SSP High Uniformity espresso burrs and purchased a decal to place over the ring collar to be able to place the zero point back to 6 o’clock. When I installed the SSP burrs the zero point was all the way to about 3 o’clock. That was driving me crazy. I know it’s just up in my head, a visual issue only. Now my DF64 is working much better than when I got it! I would say that the biggest frustration I had with this grinder was the coffee clogging on the original declumper. The stencil replacement has work well! I usually vacuum up the chute to prevent accumulation of coffee behind the new declumper. I also have a Niche and I find it has a much better work flow specifically out of the box. I plan to keep both the Niche and the DF64 but if I had to keep only one of the it’s the Niche!

I'd be curious to know why you would choose the Niche over the DF64. Please correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that the DF64 gives you more clarity between the different flavor notes in the coffee.
@EdGodoyPlana2 жыл бұрын
@@LorenzoNW I prefer most of my espresso with fuller body. The Niche produces fuller body than the DF64 even with the High Uniformity espresso burrs. There are some lighter coffees that I would use the DF64, but 7 out 10 times I go with the Niche. It’s a matter of preference.

I just got my DF64 with SSP HU (third hand..). My espresso dialing is from 2 to 5 for medium roast (4-6 on dark roast) of the 60 positions, which is very few. Do you have the same settings with SSP HU burrs? The original burrs (which I did not receive) in the videos shows 10 - 20 clicks on the collar. I've aligned to 0 of course, when the burrs are just not touching each other. Thanks!

I agree that the declumper mod might be the most impactful mod to do. However I didn't want to have acetate in the grind path because it has a relatively low melting point and would probably degrade with the grinds passing it. Instead I got 1/16 inch silicone sheet from Amazon (cheap) and cut out a Mythos-style declumper. It is food safe, heat stable (it's used to make pressure cooker gaskets), abrasion resistant, and the same thickness as the stock declumper (important so the mounting screws don't poke into the grind chamber). On modding in general, while it would be nice if a grinder were perfect out of box, I don't believe there is a grinder available that is. Even the Niche, which is widely cited as having an amazing workflow, most folks will then add a puffer to it. The nice part about the DF64 is how easy a platform it is to mod and the number of mods already available for it. The same can't be said for some Breville or Eureka grinders that have similar issues but are too compactly engineered to allow for mods. My 2 cents

Good tips! I just cut out most of the declumper, seems to work, probably would be messier if I didn't have a custom funnel /collar thing. Niche doesn't really NEED the little puffer. I liked the Specialita without any mods besides a single dose hopper, I had a bellows that worked well with it but didn't even use the bellows usually, it did have some retention but I didn't find it enough to be problematic. I like when you put in 18g and get out close to 18g I think with a bellows most grinders seem more inconsistent in dosing output, but that probably doesn't apply to all grinders.

All upgrades make sense I would say. Two questions/concerns: 1. With the additional 10% incline, how stable does the dosing cup sit on the holders when the grinder is on and there are vibrations? 2. How do varying degrees of tilt affect grind distribution? Obviously, we want gravity to pull the grinds out of the grind chamber. However at the same time gravity shifts beans towards the front of the grinder. I would be interested to know if varying degrees of tilt have an effect on grind size (fines) or maybe as well on how stable the grinder runs as it is creating additional sheer forces.

Just a few observations/comments about the modifications (for those on a budget): 1) Mod 1: I've never actually had any static issue with mine, which was surprising, seeing how much chaf youtubers seem to have. My theory is that it's due to differing climates. A more humid environment like mine probably induces less static charge (because science), which may explain the static issue. - That being said, a cheaper solution could be to just spray your beans with a bit of water before grinding. 2) Mod 2: If you dont really care too much about aesthetics, or just dont like how the ring looks (like myself), just place a sticker on the metal chamber above the markings, or draw a line with a permanent marker.

Got a df64 for work, recently purchased all these mods (but the chute hack which I will try), it helped a lot in increasing the consistency and quality of my shots. The one thing I do not recommend with this one is to rdr /spray a tiny bit of water on the beans beforehand as it ended up in clogging the burrs (in commercial setting) so to get those mods to get less messy ground coffee was a huge improvement. Hey Kyle, i am having big problems with the DF64 when grinding Filter at around „64“ and trying to switch to finer for espresso afterwards. Prior the zero point was somewhat below 0 in the middle/center down, but after grinding for filter on „64“ it shifted to 50 and prevents me to go finder without opening the mill up and cleaning it completely. Somehow bigger chunks of coffeebean seem to get stuck somewhere, causing the burrs to change alignment. Thinking about returning the DF64, because honestly that‘s what i have been buying it for - being able to switch fast between filter and espresso. Did you notice anything simular and might the Niche Zero be an alternative that doesn‘t have that Problem?

@BensCoffeeRants2 жыл бұрын
There's a few different cup holder mods and I do agree, that's the most important one if you care about preventing mess. It works fine without it but when you hit the bellows you'll get overspray. There's also custom funnels / collars you can get for it. That dial indicator I'm not a fan of, the few I tried either were too tight or too loose, couldn't get it right there are better designs. I don't think knowing the grind size really matters too much since it's all relative but it is helpful if you're going from one coffee to an other and they dial in differently or going to different brew methods back and forth. Ok I guess it is helpful :D Anti-popcorn mod you don't really 'need' but it does help prevent a mess up top and allows for 'hot loading' if you want to do that. I've found some DF64s are better than others in regards to their declumpers, it's hit or miss. I had one that seemed like it held back more coffee (bellows had more resistance) so I cut a hole in the declumper it works fine but I have a custom funnel so it's not messy, without it I think it might be messier. I haven't tried the base mods, but I've heard some people have had worse results with more of an incline, I forget what the issue was I think they were saying it clogs up more but if you modded the declumper maybe that avoids that issue, I've also heard one person claim it helps with alignment... but I'm skeptical :D
