First of all, thanks for your review. Very interesting and detailed. I have a DF64 gen 1 with SSP MP and I've been eyeing the DF64V for the variable rpm and the compact size but I don't really know if I'll notice any difference in the flavour of the coffee. ¿What's your opinion?

I've had the DF64 for almost 2 years and to get a half decent pour-over, I have this routine where I clean it out of all left-over fines from espresso, using my Dyson. I then grind 5-6 beans on the course setting & discard before grinding my dose and NOT using the bellows. If I don't do this, then there is too much over extracted astringency in the cup. Even then it's not that great. Needless to say I'm looking forward to getting my Timemore 064S, when they ship.

Did you modify the declumper or install a new one (there should be various guides online or on KZbin) You should be able to get some quite decent results with the mods, even with the stock burrs.

I'm looking into a flat burr grinder to accompany my Niche Zero. I like the niche for the work flow and nice thick espressos, but feel I'm missing out on the clarity, sweetness, etc. in lighter roasts. Would you recommend the DF64v or is there another flat burr grinder you'd have in mind?

I have one shipping 1-2 weeks from now. Was planning to order SSP cast burr's to see if they would be good for combined Filter and Espresso - maybe lower speed for filter and higher for Espresso. But have not seen any test with the cast burr's yet. Any experience with these in the DF64V from your side? Compared to stock burr's

I haven't tried 64V with casts yet, only MP and DLC. But you might be pretty happy with the DLC burrs. They are not quite as enjoyable for filter, but beat 64 cast for espresso if you ask me.

Great review! Received my machine a few days ago... and besides some weird chirrping sounds (not from the burrs) when adjusting the grindsize and the lack of being able to turn of "the light" i´m really happy with the machine so far. i still struggle a bit to find the right ranges for different brewing styles and wanted to ask if you plan to add the grinder to your grind size chart. cheers

The taste test, were both with the stock burrs? If I buy SSP Multipurpose, or Cast Labs Sweets, would a "better grinder" like Zerno or Lagom P64, help the better burrs taste even better?

Yes, both stock. P64 would be like this since both have variable speed and similar burr chambers. Zerno might be different due to a different feeding mechanism but just speculation.

Thanks for the video. I got my DF64V a few weeks back but haven’t had the time to play with it much yet. I also noticed that the RPM dial is ALWAYS illuminated. I wonder if there is a way to shut that off somehow? Also- I personally like the wood accents. It’s an aesthetic, but it works for me. Btw- did you have to season your burrs? Also- did you test your alignment? Thanks. -Brent

I never thought about the always on light when I bought this. I'll probably be unplugging it at the end of the day when I'm done with it
@coffeechronicler
@coffeechronicler Жыл бұрын
Don't know if users can fix the light, it's definitely above my pay grade but should be easy for the brand to fix. As for the wood accent, I prefer the darker wood on the DF83 lid with the black color. Burrs were seasoned with around a kilo of beans. I tested alignment with SSP MPs and had a clean wipe on the first try.

If we could open up the machine and identify the dial's light power cable, it should be as simple as cutting it and soldering a resistor in between to dim the light. Maybe one could even drill a hole somewhere and stick out a variable resistor dial to control the luminosity. But if that's at all difficult to do, maybe I'd just stick/glue a little circle of black paper over the dial to reduce the brightness that seeps through. Alternatively, just put a power brick with an easily accessible power switch between the grinder and the mains, to make "unplugging" happen with a click.
@brentroman
@brentroman Жыл бұрын
I’m not personally savvy enough to feel comfortable enough opening this thing up to electrically mod the grinder. But, I like the power brick/power strip on/off switch idea. Simple enough. Prolly smart too in case there were any power surges in the house; avoids frying any electronics on all my machines.

The SSP Cast took 6 months for me to settle, and now they are a lot better. The DLC burrs are more forgiving out of the box and better for espresso, but they don't quite have that same layering and sweet complexity at drip that you can get with Cast.

Very nice review. Like you pointed out, the df64v still has some questionable design decisions, but still; what an improvement. The original df64 was ugly in a way that was hard to ignore, and I think that disqualified it for a lot of people. Now it’s more reminiscent of a smaller Lagom P64 (one could argue too similar…) which is much more pleasing to look at. Also, would like to second the comments pointing out the audio. Definitely no background noise but it just sounded too processed and it was like you recorded the audio in a swimming pool.

Love the review as always, but if possible, I would advise you to get a better microphone. This one does some very weird and unsettling clipping on your voice and did not let almost any of the sound for the grinder go through, which is quite important in a review (if you ask me).

Wondering same. Is it buy x2 DF64 gen 2, for example, and put MP burrs in one and leave stock burrs in other to not have to deal with swapping burrs for espresso, filter and light to darker roasts? Or pair a DF83 & DF64 to have larger burr option and plethora of 64mm burrs? Or just buy the Zerno or P64 and leave in a solid burr like the Mizen and call it done with maybe an Ode w/MP or Pietro later for high clarity pour over?
