Xbox Play Anywhere is such a great feature but it only work on a handful of games. Example Yakuza like a dragon and Infinite Wealth and life is strange. buy it digitally on Xbox and can also play on windows. It's a gate way from being a console player to PC without spending extra on the same game. Played Halo MCC and Halo Infinite on PC after swapping and it's really great. Hoping more developers are open to Xbox play anywhere, but I could see them losing out money from selling a single copy instead of multiple.

Games don't actually just "persist" on Steam. Yeah many do, but where is Fable III on Steam? It used to be there but no longer. I imagine the reason why Steam removed it is because the Games for Windows Live servers went offline forever. I have the physical PC DVD for Fable III and it needs to authenticate with those servers in order to install. This game has become vaporware. I can no longer play it legitimately- not even GoG has it available. However the Xbox 360 version of Fable III still works just fine. This is one of the main reasons why I went back to console gaming. The Windows ecosystem is constantly changing. Libraries and other dependencies that older games would need in order to run could just vanish in the next Windows update or something would end up being incompatible without significant legwork to repackage the runtime environment. Being a Linux dev, I know dependency headaches all too well and it's something I try to avoid entirely futzing around with in my gaming time. I just want to pop the disc in and have the damn thing work.
@pglagowski

Can't you still download it from Steam, though? I know the game wouldn't work since the GfWL servers are gone, but I don't believe Valve has ever removed a purchased game from someone's library.

I also abandoned PC gaming is no longer worth it. Windows is not stable enough for playing old games because those games have dependencies that are no longer available on Windows 11, which is one of the worst windows to run old games. Some of the games on my Steam library no longer work because of server issues but those same games on console have no problems. I can play them every day forever. I figure that the Xbox handheld will have a console mode and a desktop mode. So you can natively run Game Pass titles and your entire library from console and PC on 1 device.
@vadergravy
@vadergravy 19 күн бұрын
Exactly what I've been thinking. That both the handheld and the next Xbox 'console' will function similarly to the Steam Deck. They'll boot into a traditional xbox console OS, and from there if you want to you can switch to desktop mode and boot into a version of Windows for the PC experience.
@ZeitGeist_TV
@ZeitGeist_TV 19 күн бұрын
The way Phil said he wants Steam on Xbox I doubt it will be a dual mode vs a more open Xbox OS which is already Windows 10 stripped down.
@RickyFish89
@RickyFish89 19 күн бұрын
yes I imagine something similar to steam deck, where you can boot into game mode which is the xbox-like ‘OS’ which has xbox storefront, presumably backwards compatibility, etc. Then you can ‘switch to desktop’ via the power menu like steam deck to get into full windows, install steam, etc. HOPEFULLY you could add games from windows into game mode, ala Steam Deck where when in desktop mode you can right-click anything and ‘add to steam’ which shows it in game mode- ideally you’d similarly be able to add steam games or games from epic or even just windows apps to be able to be launched in gaming mode. I don’t think that’s quite a given though, unfortunately. I also think this ‘game mode’ won’t be part of a windows install, but will have to come on machines that support it, e.g. you have to buy a device that has windows 11 gaming or whatever on it to be able to boot into game mode and by extension have and play xbox library of games; you can’t just build a pc, buy a windows license and start playing NHL 2018 that you bought digitally on xbox one. I think that would help get past the legal issues of digital rights to those games and microsoft positioning this as a successor to the xbox (covered by current rights) versus installing xbox games on a pc (potentially not covered by current rights).

I imagine the only route where we see 360 discs being used on PC is if Microsoft releases a stand alone box that validates ownership of a game and permits a version to be downloaded via the xbox app. Much like how 360 backcompat works on XSX now. In theory such a box could be used to do the same with other future xboxes and current physical media. Such a box would also facilitate the use of physical disc games on a future Xbox handheld ; place disc in box, it sets a flag allowing use of an installed copy on the handheld while said disc is in said box.
@Dorgpoop
@Dorgpoop 14 күн бұрын
I agree. People are way too willing to abandon physical games when they're still the only video game media that allows you to sell or buy a license second hand. Even if the game doesn't directly run off the disc (which it hasn't since the Xbox one era), it's still incredibly useful to have a physical token that contains a legally protected license to a game. Nintendo shut down their wiiU/3DS digital storefront without offering any backwards compatibility to the switch, it's only a matter of time until another one of the video game giants that's considered too big to fail does it again and wipes out millions of people's digital libraries because they paid for access to a service rather than a license they outright own.

The big cloud bet just doesn't seem like it's paying off at all. It's not a reliable enough experience to recommend to people as an alternative to owning a console, and there doesn't seem to be anything on the horizon technologically poised to change that. If they're doing a defacto retreat to the PC, then they need to either introduce some kind of BC to Windows or sell the Series X forever. Maybe that "BC" amounts to linking more existing PC version of legacy titles together with PlayAnywhere. That would handle a whole lot of XBox One gen games. 360 BC, I'd like to see their emulator brought over to the PC, it would definitely be the right thing to do, but I don't expect them to do it. Third-party 360 emulation is getting there and will probably be there in the near future, but that comes with the inherent disadvantages of piracy (no Live access, cloud saves, etc). I'm really just feeling more and more like there aren't any moves left for XBox. Offloading console hardware to third parties who are going to want to profit from every box will fail for the same reason 3DO failed, they won't be able to be price competitive. Retreating to PC means retreating to another space where they're in a distant 3rd place - they've never successfully used their Windows monopoly to peel significant users from Steam. Their hardware strategies have resoundingly failed for two generations in a row and it's not hard to imagine a gaming space where it's 2K/Madden guys buying Playstations, kids and normals buying Nintendo, spendy adults putting their money into Steam, and nobody really missing Xbox. And I say that as someone whose console platform of choice has been Xbox for 15+ years. There are so many opportunities to turn it around that they've sped past. Fall of 2023 was probably the last real chance they had to move some hardware. They had 3 high-profile first party exclusives, and if just 2 of them had been both good and relatively finished. Starfield was finished but wasn't very good, Forza Motorsport was unfinished and bad (sorry John, it was bad and has only recently become fine), and Redfall was unfinished and bad. Three strikes, nothing to motivate people to buy marked-down Series Ses or Series Xes. I think historically that will be seen as the end.

For me, this question is a crucial one to decide whether to still buy games on the Xbox ecosystem or not. Compatibility mode with Windows would make it such a versatile and future-proof investment, while limiting the compatibility to the Play Anywhere library makes investing in any Xbox console-only software a really hard sell with regards to the future.

It would likely be cheaper if MS just paid the publisher a bit of money to transfer Xbox game licences to a PC version of the same game (if one existed). The player would lose access to their digital Xbox game (or need to mail in their disc copy) if they agreed to it. But the publisher would make a bit of money they otherwise would not have received if MS allowed these games to be playable via a backwards compatible solution instead. I'm sure this would be quicker and easier than paying for the engineering work that would to make this happen.

If criteria for trophies and achievements were standardized across the board, this would have been a non issue. I’m in sort of the same boat, although I approach it differently. Developers force bad trophies into games, like ones related to difficulty or game modes I have no interest in. So I play those games ‘just for fun’ on an alt account, while I pursue trophies on my main. If we had the option to delete games with partially completed trophy percentages from our accounts, or better yet if Sony/Microsoft/Steam dictated what is acceptable criteria and what is not, then both our problems would be solved.

As far as the 360 library, I think Microsoft would be in the clear if they continued to use the same iterative translation x86 binaries that were produced for running those games on the Xbox One. As far as OG Xbox goes, Microsoft has an emulation license from Nvidia for the hardware, and the derivative binary license probably would also apply. Though if one makes a list of all the original Xbox and Xbox 360 games worth sustaining that do not already have a native PC version, it wouldn't be a terribly long list. Is anyone really going to be heartbroken if they cannot play Xbox Madden from 2004 on a current PC?

And Microsoft wanted them to: "Just tell us about any problems you encounter with installing and launching the game" But the game was downloading not from windows store servers, but xbox live servers! And the game was in xvc file format, which xbox one uses. So looks like Microsoft was testing running xb1 games on windows. But sadly nothing more happened to this since this time.

I bought the games on Xbox 360 and Xbox One, I should be able to play it on the PC if I want to. Especially since I no longer have either of those consoles. That's at least 3 or 400 games right there that I have on the Xbox ecosystem.

Give us back compatible program that runs on pc... use your physical collection of xbox, 360, one games. Then licensing is a non issue. Digital is a bit different. This solves at least half the problem, the other half being nobody uses physical drives on pc anymore.

@@mildhoof I disagree. On paper the backwards compatibility program didn't generate any direct profit, especially for games that weren't listed on digital stores, but it's actually been a huge selling point of their consoles over playstation that has kept a lot of people from switching platforms. Having a console-PC cross compatible and backwards compatible ecosystem would make people way more confident that their video game library will be playable for decades to come, which isn't necessarily the case on an all digital platform like steam.

This could have happened years ago, but Microsoft fumbled the bag during the Vista era when they tried to take on Steam with GFWL and failed spectacularly, given that the games needed to be ported to the PC first before they would be ever cross-compatible with their Xbox 360 counterparts. Unfortunately, Microsoft's priority was focused on shoehorning paid multiplayer with Xbox Live on PC before game compatibility.

What’s miffs me off is the pretence that Xbox is backwards compatible with 360, yes quite a few games have been ported and that’s it. Unfortunately DF have not corrected this. I was a huge 360 guy, then Xbox lost my loyalty as soon as they dropped my library with Xbox one and dropped my expensive 360 sim racing accessories, at the time I was shocked I couldn’t play with my new Forza wheel on Xbox one Forza. Switched to pc and ps.

If I can play PC on Xbox and Xbox on PC ... Yeah, I'll stick to the Xbox ecosystem for sure. The question that I have is how would all this work with licensing? They would essentially have to emulate an Xbox on PC ... So that they could say they're still running on an Xbox. Or put an operating system like Xbox on PC? Not an expert on this, but I'm pretty sure you can't just take an old Xbox 360 game and retroactively make it run on PC without talking to the company who developed it for Xbox.

The vast majority of Xbox and Xbox 360 games wont work on a current Xbox Series machine. No way anyone is getting anywhere near 100% of content running on PCs when the numbers are something like 1 in 4 360 game and 1 in 20 OG Xbox games for BC on Xbox Series. Xbox BC was never about preservation, it was about weaponizing the feature against Switch and PS4 which lacked any BC.

This comment is for the title of the video. Why wouldn’t Xbox (Microsoft) digital games run on Windows (Microsoft) PC? It’s a simple matter of code written within a game that prevents usage in other hardware. Discs will never be able to work with different hardware because you cannot change the security code. Digital on the other hand is limited to many games can become unlocked within a proper time to achieve library parody.

That’s what the cloud is for. Why would Microsoft even invest god knows what in trying to make this a reality? If we are asking whether you will be able to download Halo 5 (which has no pc port) onto a PC, install it & play it natively, the answer is clearly no.

The best you could hope for is Microsoft releases a hybrid that can run both pc games & Xbox games, some how, some way. This would be their version of a next generation console. But infant think this device would serve as a full fledged fully operational standalone pc. So basically you have to buy what amounts to an Xbox 5. This is different than downloading actual Xbox games onto your pc & running them.

You bought a copy *for a specific system!* Nothing more. If you want to play am old 360 game: fire up that 360. Period! I bet MS offers a PC version whenever one is available! I could also imagine MS offering a cloud version on any device, especially for old titles, if such a cloud version is available and a streaming subscription (instead of the need for hardware) is active. For full compatibility you can always hold on to that XBox. A Series S should be easy to come by.

Microsofts goal is gamepass on all devices. Imagine gamepass on ps5 but you could run the games natively on ps5, no streaming. That would be 100% revunue for microsoft and nada for Sony.
