Lesson 10: In this driving lesson, we practice turning right at traffic lights.
This is probably a driving instructor's worst fear and this really scares me.

I’m a solid, experienced driver of about 15 years. I’ve never caused even a minor crash, and have done multi-drop 3.5t deliveries across the whole of the UK, including across London. I’m super confident and reckon I’m too percentile for safety and awareness and general roadsmarts. But watching these videos takes me right back to being a terrified, insecure teenage learner, who dreaded every lesson and shook with anxiety. 😅

lol that's me right now I have been driving for close to a year but I always question myself, its my only flaw according my instructor
@ShellysAshes
@ShellysAshes Жыл бұрын
@@ominous4730 I struggled terribly with confidence. One lesson I would go out and do fine, but the next I'd make a mistake in the first 5 mins and fall to pieces, and spend the next 55 mins making lots more mistakes and just wanting it to be over. Just absurd inconsistency. Eventually, the instructor decided to put me in for the test, viewing it as a coinflip whether I had a good day or a bad one. Something to watch out for after you've passed is overconfidence, eg; you've been driving for 6 months since passing and you're starting to settle down but then you can overestimate your abilities. I guess that's why insurance for young drivers is so high but I definitely did some stupid things when I was an inexperienced driver.

Had a scary moment on my driving lesson today when I went onto a mini roundabout turning right and for some reason the driver to my left decided to also go onto the roundabout and my instructor slammed my breaks on. My poor little left leg was shaking after that as I'm not the most confident driver but slowly getting there. Luckily the rest of the lesson went well apart from mucking up my maneuveres a little

I may be wrong, but i don't see many checks into the right side mirror just before making a right turn from major to a minor road.. .even on busy enough roads. My dad aviided a really bad crash by that last minute glance into the right side mirror before crossing the road to turn right .. There was a crazt driver coming behind who decided to overtake on hatch matkings at the junction. If my dad had kept going and had not checed again before turning, the overtaking car would have crashed into the driver's side door.

Question: why do the majority of the drivers you ride with use the handbrake so much? Is that something you advocate in the UK? I was taught to only use it when parked OR if you have trouble pulling away on a steep uphill.
@beckyhulbert2712
@beckyhulbert2712 Жыл бұрын
So if we just sit on the footbrake, the brake lights can be dazzling to other drivers especially in darker weather. It's also just extra security that the car is secure
@sippoize
@sippoize Жыл бұрын
@@beckyhulbert2712 Personally I don't see that as a good enough argument though. I actually think it's a good thing that the brake lights are on while standing still so that you know, if you approach from behind, that the vehicle are actually standing still. And it also gives you a heads up when the vehicles in front begin to move when they take their foot of the brake. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying that I think it adds an extra unnecessary thing to keep track of while at an intersection.
@thezeznerd9596
@thezeznerd9596 Жыл бұрын
@@sippoize is mainly used by a lot of instructors, to teach their learners that if you are stopped it's a good idea to put the handbrake on and get your feet in the right position so you have the bitting point ready to prevent staling. that's why you may see it used by a lot of learners in these videos as well as a large generation of young drivers also doing it if they have passed their test in the recent 4-6 years.
@beckyhulbert2712
@beckyhulbert2712 Жыл бұрын
@@sippoize no I agree with you there. I think if you're stopped for a while it's nice to rest your foot though and use handbrake- but otherwise yeah it's a good way of knowing what others are doing like you said

Very good videos and very exciting ones too, but i have one questions i don't understandm why do u almost all the time pull the handbrake at stops/traficlight in Uk?
@just_for_comments
@just_for_comments Жыл бұрын
Ppl do it cuz when u use the handbrake, u can bring the clutch to the biting point and apply gas at the same time when you’re about to move off so there’s less chance of stalling AND less chance of rolling back (sometimes even the slightest downhill causes roll backs). When you use the foot brake, u have to be good and sometimes fast with your clutch and accelerator pedals to not stall or roll back. I dont really pull the handbrake up on traffic lights and most times not even on hills (when there’s a giveaway) cuz I was pretty used to my instructor’s car clutch (I passed earlier today so past tense 😊)
@alexandersvensson1

@@just_for_comments Oh okay thanks for the clarification on that, i've never seen people use this technique before! And congratulations to you that u have passed it!😊🎉
@just_for_comments
@just_for_comments Жыл бұрын
@@alexandersvensson1 thank you very much. also i forgot add in the comment earlier, the actual benefit of doing a handbrake start (especially when u stop on a hill) is that your right foot is free to be on the accelerator pedal. without the handbrake, its the time, when ppl lift their foot off the brake pedal to switch to the accelerator, that theyre most likely to roll back or stall in.

Second one was the examiner said follow the road ahead I was following the road and missed a no entry road sign he had to step on the brakes 😂😭. Third was coming out of a junction a truck was far away but I failed to notice it’s speed and emerged not fast enough to be safe. And 4th one is hard to explain but it was a roundabout where i didn’t need to stop or look right and I stopped and looked right till I realised 10 seconds later or so.
