Thank you for reviewing this board! I have a Novag Citrine, and being a tinkerer, I mounted the external wired display onto the front of the board and wired it internally because I wanted everything to be one unit without unsightly wires. Then, I also modified my Millennium King Competition by putting the ChessVolt and Chess link inside the board, again, wiring everything internally. Works beautifully! But, the other day, I took apart my DGT Pi so I could modify my original DGT board by mounting the Pi display on the front of the board. When I cut away some of the border of the board in order to make the display more flush, I completely ruined the board! I didn't expect any internal board circuitry to be in the area I was cutting away. That was a $700 mistake! :(. Now the board acts crazy with false pieces appearing everywhere on the computer display and the Pi just says "Set Pieces" no matter what. I cried myself to sleep that night. So...your review was very helpful and I've ordered this board to replace my ruined one. I reassembled my Pi and will keep it that way! I've learned my lesson! I love all your videos. Thanks again, Alex!!!

It's down to preference. I have the old wood DGT bluetooth board. A friend got the plastic DGT one. From far they look good. But personally up close seeing and touching them, knowing that their plastic - both pieces and board makes it feel cheap. But all of the functionality of the DGT boards are there.

Nice video. As a regular tournament player I use Fritz and Chessbase to study with a regular non-electric board. What I like about the Smartboard is that it's fairly light and easy to put in a bag and go to the park or a friend's house. So we can play blitz games which are impossible to notated the moves. Could you do a comparison in regards to how well the other electronic boards handle human vs human in blitz games.

The Smartboard is a great board (I have one). However the wooden board feels like a real chess board (5kg in weight) and the surface has the texture of glass. Functionally, they are the same with the exception, I don't have to worry about cables when spinning the Bluetooth board during online play. Good video... Get yourself a DGT Pi and upgrade to version 3 of Picochess (50 chess engines).

Great video, very detailed review! The thing that I don't understand is how those boards save so little. You can have a PGN file with hundreds of games and it only takes a few hundred KBs, why this boards only save 500 moves? Also, they should have an internal rechargeable battery, so you can use and register the games without the need to be plugged. These things are above the $500 range, an internal battery that give at least 10 hours of non stop use and an internal memory of at least 1GB SHOULD be the standard, we should not accept anything less than that for that price tag.
@michaelbauers8800
@michaelbauers8800 Жыл бұрын
It could be, they don't include internal battery because rechageable batteries have a lifespan, maybe 5 years, not sure. Then you have to find some way to service the board to replace batteries. I don't know if that's why, but there are cons to internal batteries.
@dmaxpr
@dmaxpr Жыл бұрын
@@michaelbauers8800 I think a rechargeable battery should not be a big deal to replace, and an internal memory of at least 1GB will not rise the already skyrocket price. At least I will not buy any DGT board that don't offer those basic add-ons. We should all do the same.
@zeniktorres4320

I want to create a chess community in Goa, India. I am teaching for the last 3 years. And this year I worked as Assistant Professor as full time job. I see there is no crazy of playing chess in college, hence keeping chess competitions would be great start. I need some help from the community as to how to start it. There are public places wherein the competition could be held, but arranging the chess boards, chess clocks and other stuff would be main concern.

Hello! Could you please record an explanation video: two real people (or one person, playing white with the left hand and black with the right hand) are playing chess with Dgt's electronic chessboard. Can you connect the chess game you are playing to the computer? After that, the chess game screen or real-time game information can be imported into a certain chess website or chess Ai to see the Ai's evaluation of a certain move they are playing (good chess, bad chess, single exclamation mark, double exclamation mark, single question mark, double question mark, and the + - score bar of the black and white square, up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down), which can very intuitively let users see whether each move in the game they are currently playing is good or not, and if not, then the correct move is where to play (click the mouse, A series of follow-up changes can come out). Can you achieve it? Looking forward to your explanation video, thank you.

What is the exact model number of this board? That should allow Google to find more info on it (hopefully). Thanks for your video - it opened my eyes to a more affordable option for a DGT board that I was not aware of.

Can someone help me understand what’s better about a DGT eboard vs other e boards on the market? What makes it more for “professionals?” I have a chessnut air and it records my moves OTB, allows me to play online, etc. I know Chessnut is coming out with an all wood version. What makes DGT worth 2-3x as much?
@billmorrigan386
@billmorrigan386 Жыл бұрын
That's because it's a professional board which is much better than amateur gimmick boards. First of all, such DGT boards are used at high level pro tournaments for broadcasting. But that's not why it is better of course. It's better because: The board easily hooks up to a DGT Pi computer/clock and you can play vs the computer (it has many engines built-in, even for lower levels, like FIDE 2000, FIDE master, etc.) It's not the same as some dumbed down modern chess computers, which are so primitive as to only mainly adapt to the strength. That's very, very primitive. A serious player knows his/her approximate rating and can set it in a professional program, like, Fritz or choose a proper engine/program on a DGT Pi. The latter offers far more options than a dumbed down primitive computer like DGT Centaur. Now then, of course, there also exist good modern chess computers, like, the Millennium King Performance that has a lot of options for a serious player or a professional. However, the latter has a smaller, less sensitive board than a DGT board. That's why a DGT board costs more. This is not to say that the Millennium King Performance is bad. It is not; it is excellent. But DGT boards and pieces have more options: they seamlessly connect with the pro software like Fritz and Chessbase. Plus, you can also connect such a board to the DGT Pi computer/chess clock. The DGT board doesn't have LED lights on the squares because serious players can use notation the DGT Pi provides. There's actually no need for LED lights if you know notation and if you can play chess at a decent level. In case you are a good club level player, you don't even need coordinates on the board. That's why many DGT boards come without coordinates. Many pros don't like coordinates there. They are simply not needed and looked dumb (like if you just learned to play chess or just learned notation and, like, you confuse the moves in the notation--that may be a negative emotion leading to purchasing a board without coordinates). It's also very beginner-like to play online with a DGT board or with any 3D board. It's not even amateurish. DGT boards are not meant for that. But DGT company is happy to earn more money like that or by creating such dumb products like chess computer Centaur which has only one positive--pretty design but it is of no use even for a serious amateur. For decorative purposes it's okay, I guess.

@@jasoncalvert758 Thanks. I'm gonna add that most professionals don't play (don't like to play) vs computers/engines but I kind of disagree with it. I like to play vs engines (because they can be set to move instantly saving a lot of time during a long classical game) and I consider it is a good way to improve (I'm talking about very long classical games) without the need to participate in FIDE events. Also past matches vs computers are very interesting to me too. Kasparov, Kramnik and a lot of GMs used to play matches vs computers. There used to be even chess magazines dedicated to engines/chess computers and there ratings were known in the past. Now people don't play vs them anymore and don't know anything anymore. They just troll and cheat online, and GMs are often afraid to discuss the topic. (Because many GMs also cheat online). And I don't even play online anymore, preferring going to a chess club or simply playing at home vs a machine.

For me, the integration with Chessbase makes the DGT board special in a way that other aren't. I ended up paying a pretty good price for mine with credit card rebates and discount codes, I ended up paying maybe about $300 a few years ago, which was an absolute steal. Later on I was able to get the wooden Timeless chess pieces for the board at a really good price. But having a real regulation sized board without extra circuitry makes this board usable for pretty much everything. It's also a great tool to play over random positions or practice endgames.

DGT Smart Board's software has a problem, that is, in the PGN code of the game read by its supporting DGT LiveChess software, the roles of all the pieces are small icons of the king, queen and other pieces, rather than K, Q, R, B, N and other capital letters? How to solve this problem?

Excellent video and I only have one important question. I go to friends house to play chess and we are too dumb to analyze our games (shhh, don’t tell them I said that). My question is, if I were to bring a DGT board with a computer hooked up, would both players be able to see an analysis of of their moves? Does it only analyze one color’s move?

You can set the Fritz engine to kibitzer mode and it will analyze the moves for both sides as you play the game. However, you want to be careful about watching the computer screen as each side will be able to what Fritz's evaluation is for the other player.

The problem is that the e-board has quite low power consumption so that some "smart" powerbanks decide there is no active device connected and turn off. You need a powerbank which is either too dumb to turn off if there is insufficient consumption or one that is smart enough to recognize that there is in fact consumption and keeps supplying the power. (Or one that allows disabling the automatic power-off feature.)

Don't buy any Fritz-Version. It's really not worth it! You can use public awailable chess engines like Stockfish or Leela Zero (which will require a rather powerful graphic card on your laptop). Those are called UCI engines. Normally DGT Boards are also connected to ChessBase (a chess database). By the way when the engine is out of book and there were no longer games related to your game only the engine will provide you with hints (when you analyze with them). In "normal" mode the DGT Board is designed to be used in tournaments! That's mainly why you got that a long cable.
