some may question how a noble person (Ariyapuggala)
can have dementia and start doubting
whether such monk has attained full enlightenment (Ariyaphala)
since dementia causes loss of memory and mindfulness.
We must recognize that the brain,
which is the material form (Rupa), is subject to impermanence.
Perception or memory (Sanna) is impermanent,
mental formations (Sankhara) are impermanent.
You can see in the VDO clip that as the offenders shouted at the elderly monk,
there was no anger or ill feeling in the elderly monk’s mind.
Even the Buddha is subject to old age, sickness, and death,
which are natural part for the aggregate (Khanda);
but the mind (Citta) that has been liberated is separate
from the aggregates (Khanda).
Assuming that Luangpu has completed his spiritual cultivation
and attained full enlightenment,
his mind (citta) no longer clings to anything.
His mind will have automatic mindfulness (sati)
and no longer needs to be guarded or protected.
But mindfulness (sati) is different from everyday memory (sanya),
which is an aggregate (kantha).
Notice the people who surrounded Luangpu Saeng in the VDO,
were trying to create trouble.
They stood towering over his head and swearing at him.
He sat there calmly, without any effort to guard his mind.
The dhamma guards his mind automatically,
but because of old age,
his brain is subject to dementia causing loss of memory.
