I started in 1971 when I was 14, the apprenticeship was 7 years then. I turn the piece over on the bench and try to press or tap on the back of the cut to open it, then run it round with a hardwood 'pusher' or the handle of a cutter. So long as the initial opening of the cut is dead square it can make a 90d edge all round, leaving very little to polish or ariss out. One cut to the edge, then spring the cullet out like a circlip and lift it away .

This gentleman is using high end glass tools I could only dream about . Meanwhile I still employ the hammer and chisel method for chase/ running the glass.

score creates a weak point in the glass to promote a crack. most fragile part of the run are where the circle is closest to the edge of the glass plate. The least clean portions of the run are start and end . Start the circle near a corner. Then "iffiest" portion of your run is farthest from the edge of the glass plate. Breaks form to relieve tension. plate glass has a tension gradient lowest is at edge. The farther the edge the smaller the tension gradient near your line.

Ok, As the foremost circle cutter in our shop I use a different method when it comes to breaking (opening) the initial score. Depending on the size of the piece I'm cutting I prefer to flip the piece over and apply firm pressure directly over the score line on our carpeted table. This way the break originates directly form the score line and does not run towards the score line from wherever the impact tool(as shown in this video) strikes the glass. You can see a degree of wavering in the edge of the piece as he is using the glass tapper 4:11 After the entire circle has been "opened" I flip the sheet over again and open (break) the circle again using the same method from the scored side. Same method to remove the off-cuts after that.

RickBo in my shop, my cutter personnel just impacts the glass below the score line with a motor valve (very precise personnel), the proceeds to slightly bend the glass to make the separation run along with the score. No wavering whatsoever.

sounds interesting but (as a totally novice) I can't quite imagine everything you're describing...any chance of uploading a video of how you do it?
@0heydude0
@0heydude0 3 жыл бұрын
@@perspectivex unfortunately not, it's been a few years since my glass shop shut down. We had a carpet topped table; supports the glass with just a little give. just like this video use a circle cutter to score the top side, then pull to an edge and pivot the glass to vertical on the table edge and flip it around then lay it down again. Then press with your thumb directly over the score line and the glass will crack from score line to the now top-side. Once it's opened (or cracked) all the way around, flip it again and repeat to ensure it's opened all the way through. Then it's just a matter of cutting the excess off.

Seems like the variable of the tapper can be interesting are there settings on the tool like say a torch wrench may have? When you mention the outer surface being perfect I see waves in the edge of the cut. It seems it would be smoother like seen on a good square cut.

LOL When I worked for my Dad he was in the glass and mirror business plus custom picture framing. He freaked me out taking a hand crank drill and a drill bit and drilling through 1/4 inch mirror using kerosene. That hooked me on machine type work . I got good with large mirrors and glass using a hand diamond wheel cutter. I was used to cuts on my hands and worked hard for him. Like your setup very much. We had a oval manual mat cutter to cut the oval matting for around pictures. I did every aspect of the biz less accounting before 17. Accounting was Mom's job and we stayed away from her money! LOL

Yes I know that. But that statement comes after the fact. We know it's the path of least resistance but can you tell me which way it was going to break by pretending you didn't know what was going to happen? That is, what makes a path the least resistive in glass?
@0heydude0
@0heydude0 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Axford The path of least resistance is typically the shortest one. And the shortest line to the opposite side of the score is a perfectly perpendicular one. Other factors can influence the path of the break such as placement of the pressure or tool used to open it in relation to the initial score; or quality or defects in the glass.

"final tapping needs to be done from the both sides" and sides need to be pulled away to release the peace, not to mention such glass in high security areas would be laminated glass (though spurting alcohol spree to cut and setting it fire will melt the film, but if its 3 layer laminated glass there is still middle section that you cant cut) Essentially answer is no, you cant do it, its just hollywood film magic. Only high power laser would be able to do this, or glass would need to be extremely thin and those places you can get with walking in from the front door..
@sergeantpepper6169

Just like every one else you misunderstood the video.It is not about cutting hole in the glass but cutting a circular piece of glass,and the difference is very big.Holes or any shapes are usually cut out of a sheet of glass with waterjet.It cuts a couple of mill out of the glass and that is how you can pull out the what ever shape you are cutting.

@ MA KA if I'm correct this is more of a controller break rather then a cut. I'm sure there are better methods to cutting glass but they are trying to achieve a certain texture.
@0heydude0
@0heydude0 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Cano well, you're right, but as far as glass cutting theory: you can't "cut" glass. Glass breaks, and what we call glass cutting is, in fact, careful and controlled breaking. The method of Scoring, then either applying pressure or a sharp impact or shock is what is used to "cut" glass down to requested sizes.

+Rami Shinnawi Ehh, accuracy. I mean you could achieve the desired results with a punch and mallet, but tools like these (there are cheaper simpler ones that work just as well) allow you to define your impact point before striking more easily than smacking it with a hammer. not saying I'd use one of these tools though.
