Diébédo Francis Kéré knew exactly what he wanted to do when he got his degree in architecture... He wanted to go home to Gando in Burkina Faso, to help his neighbors reap the benefit of his education. In this charming talk, Kéré shows off some of the beautiful structures he's helped to build in his small village in the years since then, including an award-winning primary school made from clay by the entire community.

And now he is the latest Pritzker Award (the most valuable prize in architectural discipline). Truly one of a kind, an inspiration. Every time I hear his talks my architectural passion gets stronger; I belive in my profession as a tool for change and not only as a mechanism for capital income. His work and buildings is a living example of this philosophy. Congratulations Master Keré and thank you for your example and teachings. - Hiram Bolio from Mexico.

I have deep respect for this gentleman. Since giving this TED Talk, Mr Kéré has won the Pritzker Prize. I’m delighted, because, yes, this is long-due personal recognition, and yes, because it’s the first time it’s been awarded to an African architect, but, most importantly, I’m delighted because Mr Kéré’s work represents a shift in the architectural profession towards a new set of values; community, inclusivity, locality, ecology, life transformation, sustainability, nature. Africa is leading now; the West needs to follow.
