外国人が嫌いとかじゃなくて、日本のルールに従わないから嫌なの It’s not that we dislike all foreigners. It’s just that we’ve encountered many who disrespect Japan’s rules and culture, which makes us want to keep us distance.

So do you think it's okay to just not sit next to them who is not doing anything wrong because someone else was not respecting the rules?

I think normally Japanese people want to have a space in a public so we often change a seat even though we sit down once. I didn’t realize that isn’t comfortable for western persons before my western boyfriend told me, because it’s pretty common for us! For me personally I’d like to talk foreign people casually, I prefer sit down next to them :) haha

Hi, MJ and Adam! I live in Shikoku. I think it is common to talk on the train in my area. Some people even drinks or eat as well. It maybe depend on the area.

I think the reason why Japanese people don’t sit next to westerners is just Japanese are afraid of foreigners. Unlike U.S., Japan is not a multicultural society, so we aren’t used to being around foreigners. And you said Japanese move to other seat when they sit next to westerners if the other seats become unoccupied, but it is often the case when we Japanese sit next to Japanese. For instance, we just don’t like sitting next to someone, regardless of whether they are westerners or not. So you’re not do anything wrong at all.

Don’t be so nervous! You, foreign people, especially westerners exaggerate too much the cultural difference of personal space.
