Diablo used atmosphere to create a claustrophobic and foreboding sense of dread that stayed with you long after you turned off the game. Diablo 2 used pacing and tone to create a sense of urgency & desperation that gave the player a feeling of powerlessness even as you cut your way through the ranks of the burning hells. Diablo 3 is little more then a power trip, with your character becoming basically a god before the third act of the game was over. The atmosphere is more comical then fearfully, the pacing is whiplash inducing, and lack of focus on narrative immersion feels almost intentional. Diablo was a franchise that played upon fear & expectations, that made you often feel alone and cut off from aid. It had a rich narrative lore that often pulled the rug out from under you and made use of the themes of insanity & fear. Its latest installment fails to make use of any of this...

Well said! On a lark, I decided to look this trailer up. Now, I dont really have much memories of it, save that crow and the corpse. So that Diablo scream got me at the end. I sit here, scratching my head wondering what on earth happened with the latest installment? Gone is the dark, brooding atmosphere, the sense of mortal man against otherworldly forces.The Diablo I manual is full of dripping mood setting. A mad king, a corrupted monastery, a land corrupted. It tells of mortals as allies of the angels and demons alike. But JUST as that! Sword, stolen arcane knowledge, and courage against all the powers of hell. Now there is no immersion, no veneer between the player and endless "clicklicklicklickclickclick" and loot gathering. So goes my current thoughts at the moment.

Nicholas Walls It's not exactly surprising that D3 is more marketing and less experience, What did we expect when Blizzard North shut down? Most of the original writers & designers left before the final game went into production, & from what I've been able to piece together from behind the scenes takes & interviews the development of this game was a nightmare. D3 has the skeleton of a good idea, the origin of mortals and the blurring of the lines with the eternal conflict. But they failed to take advantage of both the lore & the mechanical aspects of the original two games. Diablo 3 in a word, feels rushed. Everything about feels like it was cut for time.

I completed this game just yesterday for the first time ever in my entire Life. Im 26 years old, I bought it on auction on the net. I didn't dare play this game as a kid not even for one level straight it scared the hell out of me. I thought this game was awesome though because of what i've seen and the nostalgia. But truly, you can not know how fucking awesome this game is until you completed it. I must say wow... the Music and atmosphere sure yeah all those things outshines the other diablo games, a good game is like a good Movie, it has a good story. And this definetely does. Not to mention the Graphics for the time was fucking gorgeous the catacombs, all the books. To be honest I enjoyed this game more than I enjoyed playing Watch dogs (2014) it's all Graphics and all but it has a cool story as well. But this game is epic

Before Each of my move, i was thinking that it good idea :) Diablo II was perfect, but without this..dark atmosphere. Diablo III - i cannot buy this stuff.

Im 31. And remember playing this in 1996, opening the doors of butcher and hearing that sound "fresh meat" made me ran literally screaming and i never played this game without my big brother watching my hp and clicking the 1 2 3 4 -9 keys for potions. This game is a masterpiece diablo 3 SUCKS its like playing starcraft not scary and finished it till the end and never touched it again.

Considerbly one of the best CG work of all time. In 1995-1996 this game was released with that CG video. Today i'm in VFx and cg artist because of this video which wow'ed me in 1996 and even the game too. Hats off to whoever did this he must be the most talented CG artist in the world.Imagine there wouldn't be such amazing rendering system in those days. Even today if u want to render this video it would hardly take 3days to do it! I'm just blinded by these people and Idsoftware.

I loved this scary, horror and suspense setting of Diablo 1. The crow picking at the dead body, the desolate abandoned village, the hanging bodies, the adventurer hiding out in the house... It was the first game ever that made me scared to play it when i first saw this trailer in the 90s as a kid. Diablo 3 had none of the horror feel to it, it was more like an action game than a horror. I didn't feel like i was fighting an evil or Satan but rather a generic demon that you find in any other action games.

That's not totally true, though... There were crosses and pentagrams in D2 (I haven't played D3, so I wont comment). The issue with D2 was travelling to different lands (esp jungle, not gothic at all), and much of the game taking place outside of dungeons. Well, actually, I don't like a lot of how the skills were done, either (too cartoony and overused; where's the regular hack and slash attacks?).

The BEST of the series. The other diablo games do not have the feel and the atmosphere of this one. This one was creepy and immersive. Diablo 2 felt more like an arcade game with no purpose. The bad guys respawned when you loaded back into the game which made pointless killing them in the first place. I did not care about extra xp. It just ruin the effort of killing them. Diablo 3, well ... with their watered down prime evils with cartoony characters and cartoony effects reminding me of WOW. At least the cinematics were great but still. Why no sorcerer like the first one? Why no necromancers and druid like in diablo 2? Why not keep our characters from diablo 1, 2 and 3 and keep rising in a super epic way facing hopeless odds? Even starcraft do not feel as omnimous as it starcraft 1 felt. Now zergs are ... a more like missunderstood nice creatures that likes to eat people but actually wants a hug.

Otto Kreeg Thanks. The worst part is that in Starcraft 1, the overmind was like the super evil force that corrupts everyone and everything it touches. It was the sci fi "diablo" of the starcraft universe. Now it is a brave and misunderstood creature that fought for its freedom against the evil Xel Naga. It kind of spoil the overmind that I found so utterly unsettling and creepy. In fhe first one it was a malevolent intelligence of epic proportion and deviousness. Now thanks to the crappy rewriting it is a nice dude ... a missunderstood freedom figther. Diablo now do not have humans anymore. We do not exist. And the sign of the christ is gone as well. Instead of humans we are half demon and half angel and we can be more powerful than either of them. So the epicness of angels and devils is now gone because once we have our powers back, we will be more than them. ......... so ........ I was like ......... wtf ??? Aren't they suppose to be just below God? In diablo 1, the only hope was to contain them ... a hopeless battle. In diablo 3, we do what the big boss of Angels could not do in heaven and end up in some sort of a demi God. The hopeless battle is now gone. We defeater all prime evil in their separate form and in their united form with ALL the powers they had. We are now more powerful that ALL of HELL. What next? We defeat Tiamat, the bad aspect of God? Then God itself? Those idiots at blizzard forgot how to craft a compelling story and creating a good gameplay setting. It does not make sense anymore and there is nothing left to accomplish and gone the horror and creepy factor. Diablo 1 was a horror game with just one player character exploring the dungeon. Even the ending was so well done, you knew that is was from over and you did not know if you would be strong enough to contain the evil and the only hope was to go east. In my head I was like .. man ... we are going to need to find angels to help or some sort of holy ground. WE THE HUMANS DESPERATELY NEEDED HELP!!! In diablo 2 and 3, it is the ANGELS THAT DESPERATELY NEED OUR HELP!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!

+ravenandthecrow The protoss also, it's not the same thing. have you seen the High templar when you click at them? Everything is visible, the Eyes and the face and their clothes. It lookes more like something from Son Goku or whatever. Starcraft 1, the ghost character (!) the story, the Music the protoss Music most of all. Epic. Almost Space noir to be honest, cool, subtle and just gorgeous

Oliver Draathelvete I totally agree with you. Also the Archon voice was just epic, the same with the templare voice. It is not the same. Starcraft 2,2.5 and 2.75 as I like to call the expansions, are more like World of warcraft in terms of feel. They never gave us a full game with a full campaign with the 3 races. With broodwar we got campaigns for all 3 races like the original starcraft. I am disappointed in blizzard. Also the change in the macro game of starcraft 2.75 (legacy of the void) has bothered me. No more mules for the terran and other stuff. It is more microplayer friendly. Since starcraft one, I loved building massive defense and play macro with a lot of micro harrasment and probing while expanding my base, now I have to go micro. There is less choice. So, now I just do not play blizzards game anymore.

Well you see the thing is about the 3 main characters in the 1st game the reason they did not transfer over to 2nd game is because they all become enemies you fight in the 2nd game the warrior (whose name is Aidan) loses his mind battle with diablo and becomes the even powerful prime evil, the rogue (whose name is Moreina) was one of the 1st yo be corrupted by Andariel when she invaded the monastery and became a servant of Andariel known as Blood Raven, finally the Sorcerer (whose name is Jazreth) would be the only one of the 3 to come out of the cathedral with a relatively stable set of mind, he would travel to the west to Lut Gohlein and tell his old friend Drognad about what his accomplishment but he didnt believe him, he convinced Jahren to let him in the palace and he found the hidden portal underneath. He would then open the portal only to release the demons trapped within which made him lose more sanity than he had lost before, because of this he went on to the arcane sanctuary to try to control the demons and in doing so convinced himself that he was Horizon the one true master summoner hence he became The Summoner in act. Basically all the heroes in the 1st game become evil due to corruption which is why you cant olay as them in the 2nd game

I miss the way this game made me feel anxious. I love the combat of diablo 3 but that's all it has going for it. Diablo 1 made you understand what impending doom feels like. You could almost feel the weight of all the levels above you as you went deeper down into the game. It's sad they've strayed so far from that darkness.

maaan i remember playing this game when as a youngin damn near tremblin but eager to progress my character/story. my uncle bought it for me on my birthday and i dont think my tender mind was ready. love the series tho been around since the initial firing of the cannon. and i get tickled about the rants most are saying about d3 being to colorful or vibrant cuz i dont really see that. i see where the art got better but the graphic nature of the game is still on point and it still looks dark.

Diablo 1 is epic, its creepy and eerie environment makes you feel like you were really part of the game, scary, dark and evil environment combined with sound effects make it even scarier. I just hope they make Diablo 3 this way not graphics wise but eerie wise. Dark and scary should be the best environment for diablo :)

definitely sums up what diablo 3 is missing: the grim and satanic feel. although the cg is far behind compared to today's technology, the video still gives me the chills the seethes through the marrow when i was a kid. obviously blizzard restructured diablo 3 to be suitable for more audiences and to kiss ass to the global masses. they tried to relive the same feel in reaper of souls by making it "gothic" but, no, this is still the diablo game for me.

Know what else makes D1 better than D3? There's very little stupid exposition from your enemies. IIRC, the enemy that talked to you in D1 the longest was Lazarus. However, his exposition didn't even take 10 seconds and the fight was on. In D3, it seems your enemies just can't shut the hell up D3: You will never beat me!! I'm gonna do all sorts of nasty twisted shit and you can't stop me. While you were busy doing X, I was doing Y, lots of my forces are there now so that's your hint to go there and kill stuff!! D1: (The butcher) Ahhhh!!! Fresh meat!!! *chases the player down to chop his/her face off, usually succeeding* The butcher puts his money where his mouth is. Can any D3 monsters make the same claim?

Diablo 1 and 2 will always be to me the true Diablo and very much Diablo 2 ended it all there for the series. The true Diablo 3 was Cryptforge which was a download you can get and in this you can play as the Prime Evils for a new foe has appeared and the Prime Evils must join forces with that of good to stop this threat. If you wanted to play as the Prime Evil's then there is your chance there. I will always stand by with Diablo 1 and 2 which is the true Diablo and Diablo 3 can anything you wish
