Thanks a lot I will check into this. As I said I am a felon and had problems in Connecticut legally with my 1858 pietta. But this is so cool. In fact the reason I am a felon is because way back in something like 1990 yes yes I shortened a 16 gauge Winchester a good amount under the legal length. I guess a 5-in barrel is a little too short for a shotgun LOL. I'm a machinist and I can do a lot with anything I bet a machinists for over three decades. This looks like a lot of fun and I guess you can even get cartridges for the pieta 6 shot revolver that are made of paper. This is very interesting I thank you for the video

With minimal effort, a person could even make some mercury fulminate, or silver acetaldehyde (double salted, of course) to make some primers/percussion caps. Once you have the equipment and a supply chain, it's even faster & easier than making black powder.
@longrider424 жыл бұрын
Making Black Powder is not as easy as people think. First you need the ingredients. Hard wood charcoal, because its low ash, Sulfur, not as easy to find as you might think, and Potassium Nitrate, or Salt Peter, and I have know idea how to find that. Then its a matter of grinding all three too the right consistency, mixing them together in the right amount. Then adding just enough water to "Cake" the three together, then grinding, with wooden tools, too the proper grain size. Then getting screens to sift it out to the right size for your weapon. And that's the short version. And maybe if you know a Chemist you might be able to make caps. If you are really interested in a end of the world weapon, go with a full sized double barreled flintlock shotgun. Or a crossbow.
@kaisersose55494 жыл бұрын
@@longrider42 Sourcing materials isn't as difficult as you're thinking. Willow charcoal is the best for making black powder. Sulphur can be found at horticultural supply companies. Saltpeter is used in creating charcuterie, so not hard to obtain. As a ball mill, a rock tumbler with a handful of chromoly bearings. Neither mercury fulminate, nor silver acetaldehyde (single or double salted) is as difficult as you seem to think they are to make. We're talking about technology created hundreds of years ago...
@kaisersose55494 жыл бұрын
@gunsnwater Mercury fulminate... I think Nile Red has a video. Then look at how rimfire cartridges are reloaded. Only work with small quantities (500mg or less) & you'll be alright. If you live in a place where mercury is hard to come by, lead azides should also do the trick. Explosions & Fire has a video showing the rough process.

Black powder is pretty sensitive to barrel length. The longer the barrel( within limits) the better the velocity. I bet anything above 60-75 gr. of powder is just blowing out the end. Shoot that thing standing in the snow and it would look like pepper gravy out in front of ya. No, load that thing with fast powder,....FFF and don't push it. Pattern it on something so you can see when it starts throwing good patterns. You can tell when your overloaded because it'll blow a perfect hole in the pattern's center. Back off the powder until it fills in the pattern. I'd stick with felt and paper wads myself. Never had much luck with plastic and black powder.

If you have extra money laying around, and you like short, black powder, double-barrelled shotguns, the Pedersoli Howdah Hunter has traditional exposed hammers, and 11" barrels. There is a reason why blackpowder shotguns with 6" barrels didn't really see a lot of production. Even people who sawed them off, didn't saw them that short. Really the only production one i know of, is the one on the bottom of a LeMat revolver. Blackpowder needs a certain amount of barrel length to burn effectively. It is likely that this gun isn't burning all of the 60 grains. People experiencing different results by adding "more" powder, aren't necessarily burning more powder. The unburnt powder is just acting as a buffer or wadding section, which is one of the many variables that has an effect on shot patterning. It's worth noting that the 11"-barreled Pedersoli only calls for about 30 grains. And people hunt with them. 30 grains in 11" barrel, vs 60 grains in 6" barrel? I'm skeptical about the load vs. the output. Eventually, with adding more powder, you are going to get diminishing returns, if you aren't already there. A full length blackpowder 12g shotgun runs 70-80 grains. And that's with a 30" barrel. But yes, it is a cool gun, and unique. By comparison, the Pedersoli has more utility and a classic look, but it is a few hundred more, and it doesn't fit in your cup holder. That being said, i hope the makers continue on their path making interesting guns.

@@bobbybush1750 you can, once
@RequisiteFunction4 жыл бұрын
@@bobbybush1750 no. Firstly , even if it was safe, barrels that short at max power would require a two handed grip, with the front hand dangerously wrapping the stubby barrels. Unless maybe you are the hulk and you also hate your wrist. Secondly, it isn't safe. Smokeless powder is designed for cartridge firearms, where the brass case acts as a gas seal and the breech face holds the brass steady. The pressures generated by smokeless powder are too high to be used in a firearm specifically designed for black powder. It could basically turn your gun into a pipe bomb with a trigger. Even if the gun somehow survived the abuse, there's a good chance the blast coming backwards out of the primer nipple alone would be catastrophic enough to the user's face, if not the gun itself.

I would have used an oiled patch around that lead ball. My reasoning is twofold. 1. It will prevent lead fouling after firing. Also, that cloth and slug is a tight fit so you are oiling and scrubbing the barrel as you ram it home. 2. You will get higher chamber pressures because of the friction and good gas seal. Another plus is if you are in a shootout and your fouling is so bad the slug will not fit then you can load it without the patch as it will be a smaller diameter thus getting a few more shots in before cleaning.

It figures. I live in the one state that has legislation which classifies black powder weapons as firearms according to the ATF's definition, consequently making it subject to the NFA.
@michaelhegyan74643 жыл бұрын
Let me guess, California...
@johnalbers64223 жыл бұрын
@@michaelhegyan7464 Nope. Georgia. Remember, it started out as a penal colony. And the state government has not changed much in its mindset. They give you only one way to do something, they make no allowances for your circumstances, and they charge way too much for every mandated government service, like registering a car. Plus, they won't tell you when you register and get your license plate until your at the office that they will only accept cash or checks; cards or any other form of payment involve a 12.5 percent surcharge, which they apply before calculating the sales tax of the transaction. It's an at-fault state as well, so it doesn't matter if the other vehicle deliberately slammed their brakes in order to get an insurance payout; if your front bumper impacts their rear bumper, it's your fault. No excuses, no exceptions, no way to appeal it. Just a jump in your insurance rates and a couple more names on the list. And, to add insult to injury, the at fault person is ticketed for driving too closely. What's more, Georgia state law grants full immunity to all its counties from being sued. So, county services such as infrastructure and road maintenance are half-assed at best since they know that their failures in construction and engineering will never come back to bite them in the ass. As for the gun thing; it's another way to ostracize and continue to punish people who were sent to prison, did their time, and are just trying to put their lives back together. Once your debt to society has been paid in full, that should be it. Your record wiped clean (except in the case of sexual predators and the like) so they can at least get decent jobs instead of becoming recidivists. To keep criminals from getting around the NFA, they made black powder guns qualify as subject to the NFA's definitions and laws that gun owners must follow. So, it ensures that convicts can't legally own any form of firearm. Normally, a black powder weapon could be owned and even carried without any kind of permit. But Georgia never quite got it through their thick skulls that ex-cons who want a gun for criminal purposes aren't going to be following the damn law in the first place. They'll buy a stolen gun since they intend to use it for criminal purposes anyway. So all the law does is punish the law-abiding citizens of Georgia. And if I'm forced to decide between obeying the law or being a criminal for wanting tools to defend my family from other criminals, I guess that will eventually make me an outlaw. Gotta keel those private prison at max capacity and use them for slave labor, right? It's so idiotic it makes my brain hurt, and the human brain isn't supposed to have pain receptors.

@@michaelhegyan7464 Just to make sure I understand your point, do you mean that Prohibition put organized criminal enterprises into a very lucrative revenue stream? Presumably, this source of income was so great that it drew plenty of people in to make money somewhere in the process of making, transporting, purveying liquor, and protecting it with deadly force?(By which, I mean it generated sufficient revenue as to draw a veritable army of men with little lawful prospects who were willing to fight, and die so long as their families were compensated, and even kill members of law enforcement who attempted to stop them). Because, I think I can see the point since Prohibition ended in 1933, which cut off that revenue stream. But FDR signed the Federal Banking Act within a few months of Prohibition's repeal, which created FDIC coverage and meant that banks could be robbed without it directly affecting the citizens who did business with that bank. That's when bank robbing became a huge and very popular means of former Prohibition gangsters to make money. Doing so after many banks had foreclosed on so many homes post-Dustbowl and in the midst of and after the Great Depression gave such robbers an almost folk-hero status. Baby Face Nelson, for example, would burn every deed, proof of mortgage, or other proof of bank foreclosing, seizing, and owning people's homes and land. With only paper documentation existing, banks could not provide sufficient proof of outstanding mortgage, foreclosure, or seizure. Consequently, many homes reverted back to their former owners. While the FBI had been created in 1908, enforcement of Prohibition was originally the job of the Department of the Treasury. For one thing, the FBI did not have the authority to carry out arrests on its own until near Prohibition's end. Their job was to collect evidence of crimes spanning many county and state jurisdictions and pass their findings off to local law enforcement and prosecution. They weren't given any teeth until Prohibition neared its end. And hunting down bank robbers afterward was problematic due to lack of manpower and funding. So, they targeted the guns these gangsters used. John Dillinger didn't have a long career, but it was an eventful one. He was one of a very few who could write his name on a wall with a Thompson. Heck, he had the muscle to operate a pair of them simultaneously according to accounts from several getaways. But his habit was to carry two pairs of 1911 pistols so he would never be more than a few feet from a firearm where we he went. They were originally chambered in .38 Super, which has made a comeback thanks to 3-gun competitors. The 38 Super was more flat-shooting and could retain more ammunition in a Government 1911's single-stack magazine than the original .45 ACP. But he, as well as plenty of others, had their factory-standard guns modified. A master gunsmith was required to make the 1911 a full-auto. Custom magazines and bored-out magwells to allow staggered ammunition were less common, and there was the danger of jams or feeding failures. It could also cause the chamber to blow if it was a .45 that was bored-out as opposed to a .38 Super. Most simply had multiple magazines cut and welded together. With a much longer follower spring, a single-stack magazine that could hold 16+1 or better. And some also had a folding or extendable foregrip mounted, in conjunction with an extended barrel. It's not like plenty of servicemen didn't do much the same in WWII. But someone decided that it was the guns and smiths who were at fault. Clyde Barrows took a Browning Auto 5, sawed down a little of the barrel and a lot of the stock, and fit a leather strap over the back so it would fit comfortably under one armpit and not be notable when one wore an overcoat. He could have his coat out of the way, gun up, and empty all 5+1 shells inside of 3 seconds. He called it a "whip-it gun." Great for clearing a room before Bonnie opened up with a cut-down BAR to help finish the job, giving Clyde a breath to either reload or pull handguns. And none of those weapons or practices were specifically spelled out in the original NFA that was passed in 1934. Of course, the original NFA outlawed essentially all handguns, and required the registration of all longarms. Registration required a $200 fee that we call a tax stamp these days. In 1934, $200 was the equivalent of roughly $6,000 at present. Only the wealthy could afford that...and criminals like bankrobbers. Funnily enough, it didn't stop crime; who'd have thought that criminals wouldn't obey the law? /s But it did piss of a helluva lot of people, requiring revision. It's required revision so many times that the ATF was created in 1974 in part to be responsible the ongoing interpretation of what's arguably the worst piece of legislation in US history. And there is a lot of competition for THAT particular title. So, was that your line of thought? Or did I miss something?

Treat the paper with nitric acid so it becomes nitro glucose, essential smokeless powder. It makes it ignite and burn cleaner and fuller. Nitric acid can be found on eBay, as it is commonly used to clean prescious metals like silver.

@@johnfolger8871 I mean if you put water in any aqueous fluid and move it around to much to quickly, then yea. nitro glucose is what paper carriages are made out of, at least the more modern ones. Just raw paper, doesn't exactly burn cleanly.

Certain black powder substitutes are hotter than real black powder. I probably would not recommend 150 grains of that one. Frankly I prefer the real black powder for a number of reasons. But I don't shoot black powder shotguns. My current preference is Swiss black powder of the imported variety. Expensive, but in my opinion, worthwhile for my particular needs.

Not a huge deal but if your watching this and new to any loading wether its smokeless or BP try and measure by letting gravity due the filling. What I mean is let the powder sprinkle into your measure and don't scoop. By scooping your compressing powder and changing weight/volume ratio as we know BP is measured by volume

When it first came out, I thought it was a scam. Website didn't look too safe, and they didn't have a picture of the breech so I could not tell if it was a muzzleloader. It could maybe been a firearm, if they have had it rifled, but that is too much grey area for something before they re interpret laws and make everyone who owns one a felon. The site looks better now than what it used to. I am waiting for them to upscale an 1858 remington to fire 12 gauge.

Over shot card is for OVERSHOT...NOT over powder...the nitro card is what builds proper compression for constant velocities. I see this all the time with beginning black powder shooters ...... no need to use an overshot card and a nitro card...just use a nitro card over the powder. 2 nitro cards will give you even better compression= faster velocities. Don't worry about over pressures like smokeless powder...black powder is a whole different animal.........

One thing here.... pyrodex is NOT true black powder but a synthetic powder safe for use in muzzleloading. Though they do recommend the RS pyrodex. The p grade that you are using is designed for 45 caliber and less guns. The p stands for pistol which is the equivalent of fffg granulation black powder. The pyrodex r s stands for rifle shotgun. It is the equivalent of ffg granulation black powder. If you were going to try hotter loads beyond 70 grains I would definitely use the RS.
