D2 is literally the only game I've played that was able to give me the feeling of having a massive, unstoppable swarm of minions to combat with. Even though this type of play is not viable for speed-running, it's still nice to see it getting some attention.

I have made it to nightmare and I found a +3 raise skeleton wand to make into a white wand. I am currently farming the countess for the runes needed, i havent had your luck with it so far but I have got the lore helm sorted though, cheers

@@MrLlamaSC I am pushing on with the summoner regardless, I will hopefully never incorrectly put a runeowrd in again. it was a frustrating lesson thats for sure, next time I will slow down and let the excitment of finding the runes wear of and pay more attention. I am in act 3 nightmare now, I had a day off from playing after the rune word mishap but I am back into it. I gave my merc a strength runeword and I was a higher level then you when I did duriel and he died very easily. So onwards throuhgh the game and to hell we go. Cheers

I LOVE the fishymancer! Necro is my favorite class of all. Ive only beaten the game with necros in fact. I love the curses, like coming upon a group of 15 monsters, casting attract like on each side, them amp all, then explode the everloving heck outta them! Im a fan of bone wall/prison, so explosionmancer and novamancer, using bone wall/prison for safety. Id never beaten the game with summonmancer till recently and i gotta say with trang body/shako/hoot/+3 summoning ammy, SoJ, and homunculus, its STRONG in hell

Started a summonmancer yesterday, and got a Blood Crescent in the tower - carried it to end of act 2 where I got a torch of iro. The loot is what makes this game so great - I've never used melee at all on summonmancer but the blood crescent made it genuinely viable and massively easier through the first two acts. Mega luck! Playing much slower than you, but it's oh-so fun.

one thing that actually annoys me a little bit is that skeleton mastery is being trashed like this... the bonuses it gives, are mostly percent based. this means its bad in the beginning, but once u have even just 15 in raise skeleton, then the mastery actually becomes really strong and thats important information in a guided playthrough imo. it is not a skill that should be underestimated

? The only % on Mastery is applied to Revives. Each point in Mastery is a flat +2 damage and +8 health which is absolutely horrendous compared to the exponential scaling you get from Raise Skeleton ESPECIALLY in Nightmare where you get 15 health per level of RS along with AR/Defense.

@@amethonys2798 In Normal +2 damage/level of SM. Plus 0.7 damage/level of RS. That’s a 7x difference between RS and SM. D2R clarified the tool tip info so players can see where the damage comes from. RS is also important for arrack and defense ratings. But SM starts as more important. I go for 3 tanky skelliebros. And I use the mages despite them getting priority targeting by fully functional boss groups. Because having time to plan is valuable to a Necro.

Yes! I just completed Nightmare with my Summon Necro. The play through was so much easier than my own stumbling method from 20 years ago. One thing I did different from Llama though. Damage is King. Skeleton Mastery adds +2 damage per swing. And +8 life per level. Doesn’t sound like much. But Raise Skeleton provides more skellies and attack and defense rating. Raise Skeleton also provides 7% more damage. At low skill levels this is about 0.3 damage--or 7 times as less as a point in Skeleton Mastery. At Duriel in Nightmare I lost 2 skeletons. That’s all. At the Ancients the surviving one had 80% life and was Physical Immune. I switched from Clay Golem to Fire Golem. All 10 of my tanky skeletons were still alive. I hit with my melee weapon as the runeword provides cold and lightning damage. My severed head provided 5 to 14 poison damage. Decrepify was enough to change the calculus (related rates) so that the Fire Golem healed itself from the Ancient’s damage. The skellies surrounded the ancient. So I used low level Teeth skill to do Magic damage... and 41 minutes later... success! (I wanted to see if I could do it without reset of the Ancients) Hurrah!

I'm not sure this should be taken as a guide, I disagree strongly with a lot of the decisions. All those points in corpse explosion weren't making your skeletons any more durable.

corpse explosion adds a LOT of dps to this build. Sure you can skip it and run bulkier skeletons, but it'll take a lot longer through the game. So really that's a personal choice of do you want pure summon or to help out a little bit.

@@MrLlamaSC I have no idea what's faster, reckon whatever you do will be faster than anything I could do, but whenever I've played untwinked summoner (a LOT) I've found boss fights trivial. I reckon mastery vs explosion is bosses vs packs, and amn't conviced the non-boss speed makes up for the boss speed. It was really when you were having trouble with flimsy skeletons so you respecced out of summon resist that inspired me to post. Also I'd advise a prayer merc in normal; skeleton warriors generally shouldn't die. Get Decrep immediately at 24, SResist at 25, 1 point Clay Golem, 1 point Explosion, 40 points skeletons. Hope you don't take this bad, even though it is, technically, criticism, if I didn't like your content I wouldn't have watched it :)

I know summonmancer isn't your cup of tea but you're running at it when its really more Zen..not slow. In your first Andariel run you didn't cast your golem, them you respecced and not only didn't get one and thus no summon resist..decrep does rock, but decrep+clay golem pwns more (anything hitting your CG or getting hit by said golem) is slowed, so its a moving decrep curse :D Summonmancer is a pitched battle, attract here and over there, amp, EXPLODE EXPLODE!, several revives, next group!

Actually, the probability to get a full circle on the Tristram portal is 1/12 (5! = 5*4*3*2 = 120 different pillar combinations total, 10 of which are circles - 5 clockwise and 5 counterclockwise). It's not that crazy, I mean, getting 2 Io and 2 Dol in like 4 Countess runs is way less likely. I'm pretty sure you got a circle in a previous guided playthrough

you don't have to ONLY talk to warriv, you don't have to take the auto-spawned portal back, you don't have to not die. the only thing that triggers the bug is going to act 2 before you save and exit

You can technically get the teleport staff after 24, but he's just buying it before 24 so it's easier to scan the shop for one because it'll be unusable (red).

Hmm, I was a bit higher level for this fight on my current summon necro, but I used Iron maiden on Andariel and that worked really well for me, maybe I ought to have used amp damage, but iron maiden seemed to work ok, even if it's nerfed in nightmare. I think I did have a point in summon resist though, and maybe that made a huge difference.

After 20 years I'm back again on d2(r), love those series, love those vids, love MrLlama, been watching for quite some time. I thought this might be a good "restart" char. During normal I was following the "skill order", but you're really wrong on the Skeleton Mastery. I was suffering like you did (I'm midway in this video), until I maxed out SM. They are running through everything. Don't die at Duriel, Andariel, Mephisto NM (that's where I am), and I am way faster than you are here. I do use CE too, but the minions alone destroy everything and quickly. I only revived skeletons two or three times since I maxed both - because they don't die and they really do insane damage. Now that I'm level 50 and I have all the useful skills (curses and stuff) I'll go for maxing CE, so far one point was absolutely enough to power through everything. I sure hope you'll give it another look, maxing SM first (after you have like 5 skeletons) instead of going for CE as your main DPS. My merc never dies because the wall of skeletons is insane. And gear is all self-found (lore, skin of the vipermage, great for my MF-sorc that I'll start right after this, 30runwalk-boots do the trick for not using Stealth no more). A LOT of useful information in this run, but not maxing SM early is a mistake when I compare my easy walkthrough with all the suffering you're going through here.

Ok, cleared the whole act 4 in around 30 minutes. Diablo didn't kill a single minion. Decrep and watch him get beaten down. Maxed skeletons (both SM and later RS) are insane for nightmare. Too bad you didn't go the summon-route here, would have spared you some pain. ;)

You need to shop your wand at very low level in act 1. If your player level gets too high then +skeleton skills don't spawn anymore. If you see req lvl 12 skills then forget it. In resurrected I shopped a 3/3 wand in about an hour which was quite lucky.

Tristram has a boss/champion pack, also Treehead/Rakanishu which he actively seeks out. Better to get the experience when it's more impactful, and if you elect to skip those uniques then you'll have to go find the tree before getting to Tristram. If you hold the scroll that's 4 inventory slots, the leg is only 3 slots.

I agree with Llama, that the "endgame" runewords are really annoying/a mistake. I think the rarity of them is fine, what I dont like is that with items like Grief, the issue isnt that is good, it is that NOTHING is better for almost all weapon builds. It would be nice if there were different end game runewords for different weapon types and some REALLY rare uniques were just as good or better, that would be ideal. However grief just outscales EVERYTHING else. Same thing with enigma. Outside of really weird builds there just isnt a better body armour. It would be nice if there were a half dozen of so REALLY rare power chests and you would consider.

I have been playing for about 8 years on and off. Love the summoner the issue with your build is just that get 6 skeletons and then max out skeleton mastery and then you wan walk through nightmare and hell with ease. Corpse explosion is op but maxing skeleton mage is important because of physical immune, which decrepify helps but makes it so much easier .@mrllama

Agree that a remake would be great, fonsidering that: 1. This guide already needs improvement as it is, even before considering D2R changes (branching into CE on normal really hurt his clear speed because his summons aren't strong enough to make the first corpse); 2. D2R applied fixes to Iron Golem and summons AI in general; and 3. D2R enabled ladder rune words on SP (Insight on IG/Merc and Spirit sword/shield are very strong options). CE shines once you get your Insight, A2 NM Merc, and a decent army. Skimping on SM massively nerfs your army.

the correct build is 20 skeleton, 20 skeleton mastery, 20 poison nova, 20 poison explosion, 1 amp, 1 clay golem, 1 golem mastery and summon resist and rest into poison dagger. your welcome. try it it owns
