Ah, the memories of that young boy who sat patiently watching the game install, swapping out the install/cinematic/play disc. The countless hours carelessly spent staring into that glass portal of fantasy. The feeling of slaying blood raven for the tenth, twentieth, thirtieth time... It always brought me back to the first. The complete change in atmosphere when you reach act 2. The memories of the faceless friends I've made through that game that I haven't heard from in years, and sadly never will again. I wonder at times if their nostalgic moments bring those moments back. Do they remember me as I remember them? Let me stay awhile and listen. I want to remember for just a bit longer...

My memory slips away, along with the childhood memories that go with this song. nostalgia, that doesn’t begin to describe it. I played the life out of every character and all their possible skills. I put my heart into this game as a kid, however: the part that really kills me is that I can’t remember much anymore. All the fun times with my unknown friends, like you said, do they remember those times we shared as we cut down Ba’aL, threw Diablo in the dirt and absolutely destroyed Andariel. I reminisce about the past and the feelings I felt while playing this game had to have been cosmic. I’m buying the game in a week. I can’t wait to start up a Druid or a Assassin, maybe a Necromancer. No wait I’ll be a paladin!

Getting to Tristram, as a child, not having played Diablo 1 but knowing Tristram was a place of significance in the first game. Getting to Tristram as a child was like visiting some legendary village, doomed and overrun. But we cleared it and rescued the famed Deckard Cain. It was a clear raising of the stakes, exemplar of our early game growth and our capabilities and a reference to older game and olden times. All in one.

Diablo genuinely has one of my favorite settings in fantasy. One of the only video games where I've read the lore books and supplemental material, because it's such a mysterious, hopeless, and cruel take on the early medieval fantasy setting. There's no elves or orcs or typical fantasy trappings of even low fantasy settings. There's just heaven, hell, and mankind stuck in the middle fighting to survive.

This game. This eerie, beautiful music. I'm in my 30s now. But the opening notes to Tristram...they bring me back, instantly, to being home on a cold, fall weekend. Raining outside, and gloomy. But, a nostalgic feeling that I love so much. Some of my favorite, warm-feeling memories. There are only a handful of songs/music, and other such nostalgia inducing catalysts. Yeah but they are rebuilding the music from the ground up. I have very little hope for this. Specially after the shitfest that was WC3:reforged.

@@StinkyGreenBud no, they probably won't fuck it up this time. Devs who are working on this already made few good remasters and this is different game studio.

I used to get sad when leveling and following a group doing tristram runs, we would always be on to the next run before I could really enjoy the music. Nostalgia indeed.

Matt Uelmen the composer, credits to him ofc!!! A timeless song.

I love how even in the early parts where it's 1:1 with Tristram's theme you can hear subtle details like additional understated bass notes starting around 1:05 and extra reverb that isn't there in the original Diablo 1 mix and add this gradual sense of foreboding that just gets more and more intense and discordant until 4:50 where it just becomes something totally different and far darker, but with the same motifs and instruments as the original to reflect the corrupted and fallen state of Tristram in Diablo 2. I could gush about Matt Uelmen's work on Diablo for hours, it's so perfect to me. Possibly my favorite RPG soundtrack ever.

one of the things that made diablo 2 so great was this epic soundtrack

I'm not nostalgic towards this song for the same reasons as many of you. I randomly found this song on Grooveshark a while back and put it on my persoanal playlist there. It was great. I put a bunch more Diablo songs on that playlist. And then Grooveshark died. And just now have I stumbled on this song again because I have a friend named Tristan and I thought of it. I would never have come back to this song because the platform I listened to it on is gone, but now I remember this haunting music, and I'm glad I do.

For me the ultimative game, there will never be a better one, or a better time for gaming... mid 90s to mid 00s was so awesome... I want back to these times so bad...

I believe this song to be one of the best tracks that could coincide with the game itself. Take for instance the intro... its eery welcoming strums of the guitar can resemble some unsettled peace and trouble, it's dawn and the sun is setting, when a traveler comes along, everyone who was there looks on in wonder. Who is this person? The air about them isn't natural. But at the same time, the town is going through tragedy after tragedy. So their air is already troubled and forever uncertain until the source of their suffering is stopped for good. Their thoughts return to the wanderer. They hope the adventurer doesn't stay long, they hope whatever happens, happens soon so they're not left in suspense and worry. So someone finally ventures forth and seeks to learn the travelers business, while at the same time... warning them of what has been the buzz lately. The wanderer says he or she could fix whatever is happening, when all of the sudden the trouble comes following the adventurer into town. Everyone panics and runs away to hide behind something in hopes of avoiding the gaze of their possible destructor, but the adventurer becomes the sole focus of the trouble as they stand against it. Ready for a head on battle, the wanderer casts a cold glare with zero emotion showing, only the obvious intention of... it's time to dance. The song at this point picks up in its tempo, increases its foreboding and sinister melody. Then it breaks off to the sound of soft whispers, leaving the listeners to find what happens later on by delving into the story. which, in itself is what happens in the game. I love this song, even after all these years, I come back to it, and it gives me this vibe about hell and life and how they intertwine more than we would like to think. Pure beauty. The rise, the climax, the fallout, and the ever continuously moving universe.

Try Torchlight 2 or Path of Exile.

***** Yes, Diablo II feels like a good classic horror movie, with a sad, tortured soul to which this awesome soundtrack contributes greatly. Path of Exile was kind of on the money there, but the game's story is somewhat uncaptivating, while the gear you get and monsters you fight - feel repetitive.
