When I had topaz's in my gear my friend was baffled by my choice where as he was sporting all rubies. One thing to consider is topaz doesn’t do anything unless your cc’d. Rubies give life 100% uptime..for instance if my rogue has 50% dodge and the required armor/dr paired with an unstoppable (shadowstep) on a 3 sec cooldown, and that’s not even mentioning all my cc capabilities…I’ll take the extra health for those tier 100 dungeons personally.

I would like to add one little detail. When we are fortified and take a hit. We loose fortify. So I personally choose sapphire just because having more DR = loosing less fortify from each hit. If I choose rubies, maybe it can be a bit more effective in my setup. But I will have more trouble to sustain my fortify status

One thing i noticed was the rare paragon nodes that give the extra bonus to max life count seperate, so instead of 8% it counts as 2 sets of 4% which nets a little bit more life. I could be wrong, but i think this tallied more with the values i saw in game. On barb some of the paragon set ups can net so much life%, combine that with upgraded challenging shout with increase duration from crowd control duration for extra near perm 20% and a fort potion for 30% and you're easily past 30k health. Just imagining this with a Doombringer if anyone ever finds one, can roll up to 41% max life, that'll be one chunky health pool. It gets to the point where 2% health nodes are almost as good as having a mid max life roll on gear.

Great vid, thanks! I did some algebra and came up with this rule: There's a breakpoint at 2653 * (1 + multiplicative life bonus) If your total life on gear exceeds that breakpoint, sapphire is better. Otherwise, ruby is better. For example, in your vid, you have 53.89% multiplicative life bonus, and 2903 total life on gear. The breakpoint is at 2653 * (1 + 53.89%) = 4082.7. Since 2903 < 4082.7, ruby is better for you. Sounds about right?

Fortify can get much better depending on your healing source. If you rely more on potions (which has a fixed component) and other fixed healing boosts, then your EHP might be slightly lower, but your healing in percentage of your max health will be much greater with fortify. If you rely on % max life healing then both are affected the same way and rubies are as you said more reliable.

The other thing you don't mention here is that EHP isn't necessarily equivalent between DR and HP increase. A larger health pool means any healing that is based on your health total goes up, whereas more DR makes flat healing values better. In other words, take a look at where your healing comes from, as that may make one form of EHP better than another.

My understanding is that barrier scales with your maximum life (but cannot exceed your base life). So, if that's correct, then would Rubies somehow contribute twice to my EH (i.e., first to my barrier which scales off of my max life and second to my max life itself)? I've been digging these videos, learning a ton and making adjustments to my build. Thanks for all your hard work.

I'm not sure how barrier scales with other classes, but I know for temerity pants, it only scales with your base hp. But also remember that DR% also affects your barrier, so if you are thinking that your barrier increases your ehp twice, your DR% also does the same thing in effect.

Have any of your videos covered a comparison between how debuffing a mob's damage works compared to increasing your personal damage reduction stat? There's a passive for Barb shouts that lowers a target's damage output by like 12%, and then there's an ability for Druids as well (Hurricane) that lowers the damage output of targets affected by Hurricane by 20% (the Decrepify curse for Necros also does something similar - there are probably other abilities too for other classes). Is that the same as 20% DR, or is it superior, inferior, ?

So damage reductions percentages of the same type e.g. "Damage reduction while fortified" are not additive with each other, but are multiplicative? So for example, you have two affixes with 25% "damage reduction while fortified" and one affix 25% "damage reduction from close", your total DR would be 1.25 * 1.25 * 1.25 and not 1.5 * 1.25?

Sometimes you dash or roll out of a sticky station into another one because there just isn't any place to roll or dash too. Having 50% DR during CC (I doubt it's actually that high) beats everything else.

Are you taking into consideration their diminishing return implementation for damage reduction? It’s my understanding that %dr on stats does not mean actual %dr since the effective %dr is lower but I don’t have that particular formula to have into consideration. For example if you have 20% fortified dr on chest and pants you’ll see on you stats sheet that it does not show 40% but rather a lower number since even though for the same type of dr is additive, the more of that stat you have the less effective % reduction it actually gives (although it still scales because of the way damage reduction in general is implemented as you explained on other videos for armor for example)

One thing i have wondered, how does the game calculate different kind of DR? For example, when i have a character that has a DR vs all of 10% and 20% DR when CCed and lets assume that the character is CCed at the moment, do those DRs get multiplied together, like you have shown, or are they treated seperatly and the incoming damage first goes through one DR and then through the other?
@Xarrio
@Xarrio Жыл бұрын
In your example, while CC'd, you would have DR vs CC and DR all applied, which would work multiplicatively. DR%Total = 1-(1-20%)(1-10%)
@Daniel-rd6st
@Daniel-rd6st Жыл бұрын
@@Xarrio Thanks! First i thought that cant be, because it is not too difficult to get to 100% and more DR, if the game calculates all different sources of DR multiplicative but then i remembered that i think the devs said that there is a hardcap for DR i think at 80%.
@Xarrio
@Xarrio Жыл бұрын
@@Daniel-rd6st There is no hardcap on dr, or a softcap for that matter. Maybe you are thinking about the hardcap for DR from armor specifically being 85%.
@Daniel-rd6st
@Daniel-rd6st Жыл бұрын
@@Xarrio Ignore this post. Are you sure about that? Because it is not too difficult to get a DR for specific Situations above 100%, especially when you are control impaired with topazes. For example my character at at a time around 36% DR against close enemies + 5 perfect Topaz + around 10% DR when fortified + general DR from the boni on the armor at around 10% + around 15% DR vs distant enemies (i think, it has been a while since i went for heavy DR). So basically when control impaired it shouldnt have been possible for an enemy to kill me at least in close range and yet it did happen, i dont think that i ever was invulnerable. Or am i making a mistake here? Or does that 85% hardcap trigger here, that you mentioned? Because i dont know exactly what you mean with DR from armor. From the boni on the armor or the DR you get from the armorvalue?
@Daniel-rd6st
@Daniel-rd6st Жыл бұрын
Ah i found my mistake in understanding now. The DR can never reach 100% when all the DR effects are applied multiplicative. Sorry for not getting there sooner 🙂

"Damage reduction"(DR), reduces the damage you wou take from an attack, "enemies deals less damage"(EDLD) reduces their damage output and it stacks. Examples Enemy deals 100 damage, you have 20% DR You take 80 damage Same situation but (EDLD) ENEMY deals 100 damage but you reduce their damage from 100->80. Now if we stack both, DR and EDLD Enemies damage drops 20% 100->80 Then you have 20% DR 80->64 What makes this nice is EDLD works for your whole party. Example rogue "Poisoned enemies deal less damage" helps everyone not just the rogue.

I saw it somewhere that, instead of multiplicative, the default 10% DR by fortify is additive to the "DR while fortified" stats which means the more "DR while fortified" you have, the more effective this affix gets. If this is true, then stacking Sapphires may be good for some people. I haven't tested it so don't quote me on that.
@Professor-Slothmaster

I've been trying to find a reliable source to confirm the way DR w/ Fort works... If it's all additive, the max total DR w/ Fort = 105.25%. wtf? Base DR w/ Fort = 10%. +3 Defensive Stance = +6% +6 Sapphires = + 6 * 3% = +18%. +3 affixes = 3 * 15.75% = +47.25% +Undaunted = +10% +Bulwark in Bone Breaker = +14%

Another excellent video. This might be my favorite one yet. Originally the gem meta was full Rubies in armor because they give the most obvious benefit for non Druid/Barb players. But then a couple streamers started running full Topaz and then everyone and their mom started copying them. But your video clearly demonstrates how at least for Rogue that has even a pretty minimal investment in max life in the paragon board Rubies are the best option unless you aren't running a CC break like Shadow Step for the unconditional HP it they give. There are A LOT of maximum life nodes on the paragon tree. Combine those with Rubies and 3-5 life rolls on your gear and you can get between 16-20k HP which is a fat health pool. I currently have 17311 hp, with 4 life clusters on my tree (8x 2%, 4x 4%), and 4038 health from 4 slots of gear. I gain 2363 life from my 5 Rubies. I'll take that any day over the conditional Topaz DR. I run two charges of Shadow Step so I should pretty much never be perma CC'd in the first place. There does appear to be something wrong with the spreadsheet for me though. I plugged in my total life with rubies, adjusted the paragon part to include all 12 of my paragon life nodes, I plugged in my life on gear. But it's showing that I should have 13363 health without Rubies, but when I take out my 5 Rubies in game I only go down to 14948 health.

Thanks for the feedback. That is odd on the calculator. When I test it, it comes out correctly. Are you sure you are using the correct section? @@haydenap Yes, you only need to use 1 section, but you need to use the one that applies to your situation. If you have rubies equipped, and want to know your base hp/ehp, use the top section. If you have them unequipped and want to know, use the bottom.

A very important factor in choosing a gem is does it give resistance? If it does - ignore it. Resistances do not work ! Its officially confirmed that only armor and fortified stat work. I dont know how did they sc***wed this up but and entire system in the game doesnt work. This is why the sorc is a glass cannon , because its main stat (int) gives resitance and that doesnt work.

Funny enough I wonder what interactions are considered cc. For instance ww barb you are actually slower when channeling. But if you use an unbreakable shout you actually move faster while channeling. I wonder if the 2nd is considered you putting yourself into a cc state.
