Love the work done thus far. My 2011 SS/RS Cam2SS could use a few new presents to make it run harder. Here in Cali it is hard to do a tune because the car automatically shuts down when they hook up the smog test equipment.

If it is C.A.R.B. certified it should be allowed. However, the first thing they ask when you pull into the smog check station is: Is your car chipped?" If they are a legit smog check station they decline to check it. There is a currently a law working its way through the California legislature empowering the Highway Patrol with expansion of vehicle inspection authority for vehicle modifications including smog equipment/exhaust. This is part of the California Green Initiative.

Yeah, just flash it back to the factory/stock map tune. It should have an option directly in the handheld tuner to do so; which I believe, also “unmarries” the car and ECU from the physical tuning device itself. THEN, you should be safe to get your car smog checked… The Diablosport i3 handheld tuner actually has parameters you can adjust, that aren’t engine and/or emissions related. For example, you can adjust the speedometer calibration for final drive gearing and/or different wheel and tire size combos. You can maybe even get away with adjusting the fan speed/power and activation temps. If you do those non-emissions related adjustments and flash the adjusted map to “tune” your vehicle, it should be fine, since the stock tune it still there, theoretically. It would be the same with you getting your speedo recalibrated at a tuner or GM/Chevy dealership. If a smog check place asks, just say no and let them run through the computer/software check to see if everything passes with flying colors.

So what are the details in the tune? Just the octane level can’t be the only thing…does diablo provide a list of what’s included for each of those tunes? Be kinda embarrassing when someone asks and i say…dunno..i just tapped the screen 🤷‍♂️

I mean, these are pretty much just preset tunes, since the EPA’s banned all “offroad” and “racing”/track driving tunes. Yeah, it sucks, I know… If you ever check out other in-depth tuning platforms like HP Tuners, it can tell you some things that handheld tuners may “tinker” with. As far as I’m concerned, all the handheld tuners are supposed to be EPA legal (or CARB legal). This means that it only contains certain parameters that are modified within the available preset tunes; emissions being one of the things that you can NOT have modified anymore… For the popular remote tuners that you can do a Google search on, they’ve since stopped doing “serious” custom tunes in the past 3-4 years or so. They can probably do some “extra” things, but tuning for things like ethanol/E85, camshaft upgrades, etc. are all not accepted by the remote tuners anymore..

But as far as I’m concerned, it’s an adjusted tune for a bit more power, just nothing crazy. You should technically be running 91 or 93 octane anyways. The Diablo insport i3 handheld tuner comes with like 3 preset tuning maps; one for 87, 91, and 93 octane pump gas. I’m assuming the 87 one is some sort of “eco” tune, which I’ve never personally run. I do know someone with an automatic L99 5th gen Camaro SS, who says he saves a few dollars and gets like an extra 2-3 MPG; but he does baby the car, so I’m not entirely sure there… The other adjustable parameters are real nice, allowing you to re-calibrate the speedometer for your particular rear axle diff gearing and your particular wheel/tire size combo. You can also tune the fan speed/power and activation temps, which is also another very helpful adjustment for tuning. You can log with the device, however, I was only able to get it to work a handful of times. It looks like there’s some sort of glitchy latest update, so I’m not entirely sure there. I ended up getting rid of mine for HPT

No, the EPA has banned all handheld tuners and custom tuning shops/providers from tampering with emissions-related components and software. You can still try installing o2 sensor non-foulers/spacers, which is an alternative. It’s better than nothing, and lots of people run this with their handheld tuners nowadays. You can’t really do anymore “serious” tuning without the right software and all, but it’s decent for someone who’s not looking to mod their car for a ton of extra power (~100-200+ HP gains or even more). Some people say running long tube headers with the CEL codes on for the secondary/downstream oxygen sensors, isn’t too terrible; but you might want to get in touch with an actual tuner to see if you can log the fuel maps to see what is actually going on… It will generally run lean for the most part, and then start running rich once you start getting on it, I think (someone correct me if I’m wrong here).
