Marvel did all the Transformers naming and character background work, mostly Bob Budiansky I think :) In Japan, Optimus was still called Convoy throughout. To be fair the name Optimus Prime would be clumsy as fuck in Japanese :)

Actually I think the battle convoy (Optimus prime G1 now) is a precious toy and it’s my favorite mold of the story of toys, and it’s funny ‘cause I was born in 2005 so the first one that I get was the 2018 Walmart reedition but now I’m trying to collect all variants including the OG battle convoy
