Nice diagnosis Jim. Those cars are notorious for failing coils. Mario just did one as well, and there was a discussion on it because they also have problems with carbon deposits that need to be addressed. Great video as always!

That's an N12 or N16 engine; it's not direct injected, so there's no problem with carbon build up. It would have been nice to know how many miles are on the engine.

Nicely done Jim. Those coils should not fail that soon.

@@jimthecarguy any idea why it keep misfire same cylinder
@ST-xc3qw5 жыл бұрын
If your scan tool does not pinpoint which cylinder misfired what’s the best way to determine which coil is bad? Pulling the coils out one at a time while the car is running?
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
The scan tool will tell you what cylinder misfired . No you don't want to pull the coils . The shock can knock you on your rear end.

Mr. jimthecarguy by the sound of your accent I would assume that you are located in the east cost, but if for some reason I am wrong and you are in the west coast I would like to know where since you are a mater of your craft and I would be considering switching from my current mechanic. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Jim do you consider Infiniti's decently reliable?
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
Yes they are reliable.

Yeah, "over time the materials in the coils can break down"...so, after less than three years and 37K it needs new coils. Way to go BMW. It's out of warranty, I'd recommend they sell it. Coils will be the least of their problems over the next few years. 11 years and 202K miles and my 2008 Honda Odyssey I bought brand new is still on its original set of coils.
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
Oh yea you can not beat the dependability of a Honda. They are my favorite.
@Membreins2 жыл бұрын
Have had 3 Mini Coops where the tsb suggests upgraded coils and plugs. Useless. Does not repair the misfire. Timing solenoids and throttle bodies are the common issue when coils and plugs don't help. Also coil driver circuit from the ecm gets damaged. Electronic pros can repair that. Maf is possible but usually maf code is actually throttle issue. Often you will get no codes. If any coolant temp codes, notorious for thermostat assembly which also can cause misfire.

2016, with 36k miles and a bad coil? What a joke BMW won't cover it under a powertrain warranty.
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
Actually it would have been covered but the owner decided to pay out of pocket instead of dealing with the dealer.
@weldingjunkie5 жыл бұрын
Ozzstar it’s electronics nothing is 100% through 75k or whatever interval it should of made it to . This can happen to any brand at any time. And it’s mini who would of warrantied it. Bmw made the new Supra too but it’s Toyota who services it.

Actually the owner did not want to bring the car to the dealer. They just wanted to pay out of pocket instead of getting the run around at the dealer.

That thing sounds horrible. Mini’s have bad reliability as this should never happen with this number of miles.
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
They actually have a TSB regarding the problem with the coils. It's always a good idea to check the TSB's

Sounds like it has a vacuum leak Jim, listen to the tape and you'll hear an air leak.
@JoesAutoElectric5 жыл бұрын
You can be fooled with audio on recorded videos where it sounds like a vacuum leak. Jim would have caught it on fuel trim if it had one. Most likely the intake design on this car is what you are hearing.
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
With the newer cars today there is a lot of noise from the intake but in this case the was no leak.
@HBP685 жыл бұрын
That’s why I don’t believe in engine covers, they don’t let heat escape... Also unreliable vehicle with only 36k miles
@jimthecarguy5 жыл бұрын
The covers do cause the heat to build up.

I am not convinced that replacing all coils is a good thing to do. They have very long design life so one bad one at a low milage and age does not indicate they are all going to go. Its just in indication of not so good quality control at BMW's coil supplier. BMW replaced all the coils on my V12 BMW as a good will gesture, which is the same coil as the Minis. Two failed within the first two years...

Thank you for watching and your input.
@hogi999 ай бұрын
The cost of the labor to address the issue a second time would not than cover the cost to just replace when 1 fails. Don't let quarters fall out of your pocket to grab a penny.
