It's hard to believe, but sometimes customers, for whatever reason, don't want to pay for diagnosis. Possibly because "insert name of garage here" has already looked at it and said this is what it needs. I've personally been down that road, that's why I always do my own diagnosis, just like Ray did here.

@@samishiikihaku To be fair, when you are working for a shop and you are given a work instruction like "replace the AC evaporator" then you are not going to be paid for a diagnosis. A work instruction to "diagnose AC not cooling" is a different thing. Ray isn't work shy, and one of his strengths is diagnosis before repair. Remember that Ray left his last job after undisclosed disagreements about they way they did things. Now that Ray has his own shop, it seems likely the conversations he has with his customers and his approach to that job is more in line with getting the best results for those customers. Sometimes what the customers think they need and what they actually need are two different things, or only part of the solution.

Despite my strongest suggestions and even offering free diag in some situations…. Some customers will insist they know what the problem is (they don’t) and refuse a second opinion Most of the time it’s about not wanting to replace something that doesn’t need replacing, and also because that same customer will say “you did it wrong” and blame you for them being stupid

Through the magic of youtubers sharing their knowledge, I have fixed or rebuilt every aspect of my 2006 Chrysler 300c. As stated before the “schrader” valve is not the primary seal on a service port. You will never get them to 100% seal. The cap is the primary seal and needs good gaskets and tightened properly. Changing schrade isn’t going to stop the leakage. Making sure the caps fit tightly and seal will ensure the system is sealed properly. Many times when you remove the cap you will hear slight hiss as gas that leaked past Schrader valve but caught by the primary seal the cap.

Not sure if you are aware, but I have a 2003 and they had a problem where the temp probe on the evaporator was not in a good place, and while driving the probe temps never picks up that the core is freezing up. So what happens to mine is that the compressor does not cycle enough to keep the core clear of ice, and the airflow becomes restricted and eventually you get no cooling after about 20 min of driving in humid conditions. There is a TSB to relocate the temp probe. Not sure if the 2004 had a fix or still has the issue. Something to think about if you get a returning customer on this truck!

another great project. The Robinair is an awesome machine. We just got one in our shop. The boss asked, "Have any of you guys ever used one of these?" I said No, but I have watched Ray use one for over a year now. He said something about me staying at a Holiday Inn. I didn't get the reference at first. So I'm now the Go To Guy for all things Robinair. Those cab tractors' AC Must work and work well. So if you are ever in Louisiana and have a problem with your Kubota AC, I'm your guy. One thing tho, That new accumulator (sometimes called a dryer) was a great thing to replace considering someone else already fired the parts cannon on that rig. I hope there is a follow-up video in a few weeks to see if all is well. Thanks for sharing your hard work, man. Cheers from Louisiana.

A good way to diag a bad evaporator is by putting dye into the system, letting the vehicle run with the ac on for a while then use a UV light on the drain hole and if It starts glowing, then the evaporator is leaking.

23 degrees... thats frozen evaporator time, not air conditioning. Accumulators generally don't go bad - schrader valves and o-rings tend to be culprits. But the gunk in the line: compressor failed previously? Maybe accumulatpr changeout gets rid of hidden crap. So far so good... you didn't break out the UV light before road test, which surprised me.

The hose on the drain has a purpose. There is a design - flaw, of a kind. The condensate that comes out the drain enters the air flow under the hood and has a tendency to blow back along the outside of the drain into the cab and make the passenger floor wet. The hose diverts the output of the condensate drain and cures the issue.

Interesting about that high side valve leak. I have 2 busted blend doors, I have no floor air and the recirc door I removed-pulled out thru the blower. Pulled outside cowl and sealed the air going in. The blend doors crack their hinges as the door actuators overpower the cheap crap-plastic the doors are made from. Would be a good video to see blend door replacement. Blend doors are one serious fail here by the OEM.

Minor correction to your A/C system explanation; The cooling effect is not caused by a change of state (liquid to gas for example), it is caused by the rapid expansion of the gas through the expansion valve (joule thomson effect). I wish I lived near your shop, you are one of the most conscientious people I know of and I would never take one of my cars to anyone else. I hope you have a great day!
@imyyz4u
@imyyz4u Жыл бұрын
As a retired HVAC guy I would disagree, cooling is caused by a change of state (liquid to gas) in the evaporator and the heat is released by change of gas to liquid in the condenser. Liquid passes through the expansion valve not gas, it boils in the evaporator do to the pressure drop and absorbs heat along the way. Properly charged it boils all liquid into gas just as it exits the evaporator coil. The gas is compressed and enters the condenser coil where it gives off heat as it is converted into a liquid that accumulates at the very bottom of the coil. The liquid is passed to the expansion valve where the process starts all over again. Look up 'Latent heat' and 'refrigeration cycle'.
@SqueakyHinge
@SqueakyHinge Жыл бұрын
The short and long of it is the refrigeration effect takes place because the refrigerant gets hot as hot goes comparative to it's boiling point. And the boiling is achieve in a sealed system through a pressure drop device using an expansion valve or a restricted tube other wise known as a cap tube. The second law of thermodynamics states energy is neither created nor destroyed, only transferred. So when a refrigerant is forced to go from one pressure to another lower pressure the boiling point of that refrigerant is met which results in a lower temperature. And since heat only transfers to places of a lower heat value via the boiling point being "cold" heat transfer naturally takes place which is the relative result. R134a, a common auto refrigerant, boils at around -16 degree F. And that is achieved at the outlet of the expansion device of the evaporator. So the higher heat value from the cab air transfers to the coldness ( less heat) of the refrigerant which then get pushed to the condenser outside of the conditioned space where the heat from the hot gas meets with the lower temperature outside air and, once again, hot goes to cold...so off goes the hot air from the cabin transferred to the air outside of the cabin. Thermodynamics... you have to love it. It keeps all of us alive.
@jimsherman2477
@jimsherman2477 Жыл бұрын
Simply put, it’s the same as boiling water on a stove. As the water starts to boil it absorbs heat from the stove. By controlling pressure you make the water absorb more heat before it turns to steam. Refrigerants just boil at very low temps at atmospheric pressure.
@boggy7665
@boggy7665 Жыл бұрын
@@imyyz4u For the curious - Also look up a pressure-enthalpy graph for (R134a in this case?) Quite an eye chart, temperatures are there but the lines meander. Pressure is the ordinate; equal pressures along horizontal lines; lower pressures on the bottom. The graphs I've seen here have an example refrigeration cycle drawn in as a near-rectangular loop. Refrigeration cycle goes -clockwise- counterclockwise on that line. The evaporation cycle is -right to left- left to right along the bottom of the 'box' in that graph. Most of the a/c-cabin-heat absorption occurs in the (thumb-shaped) zone where both liquid and vapor are present. Throwing my chips with imyyz4u. Disagree with Tex: Will be some Joule-Thomson at the capillary/valve but that's a minor/insignificant effect, right? Equal enthalpy both sides of the valve, so along the vertical lines in the graph. Reading a vertical line around the right side of the example 'box', the liquid actually heats up about 5 °C due to the Joule-Thomson effect.
@boggy7665
@boggy7665 Жыл бұрын
@@SqueakyHinge Lower temperature, yes, it gets cold at/around the capillary tube/expansion valve. (Those example R134a graph/box I saw, actually still hot at the expansion valve.) As the liquid boils in the evaporator, it continues to stay at about the same cold temperature, all the way until someways through the evaporator (if properly charged), all the liquid has changed to gas. Meaning, it doesn't all happen at the capillary/valve.

that job on say a 6.0L powerstroke is soo much easier and way more convinent. its a great design to have the HVAC componets in a "HVAC" box. that can be removed as a unit. instead of having to remove a entire dash.

The garden hose drain will suck outside air into the air handler, it should have a “duck bill” drain so condensate can leak out without air rushing in. Also place tape over disconnected fittings, leaving system open to atmosphere adsorbs moisture which will combine with refrigerant oil to form acid which will attack reed valves and other components, clean and dry is very important within system, leak dye is not your friend

On my 05. 5.9 ram diesel my air conditioner stopped working. It was 2 problems. First was a noted problem with the rams, the bottom of the evaporator rusted a hole in it. The 2nd was the fan clutch went which shuts down the air conditioner to help take draw off the engine so its not working as hard to keep the engine cooler. I did a vacuum draw after replacing those and let it sit a couple hours to see if i had any leaks. I added refrigerate, dye and the proper amount of OIL, I noticed you didnt, it worked up until I parked it at 380,000 plus miles. Not bad for a backyard mechanic huh ?

Ray, I have the same exact year make of truck. You may still have a blend door issue with the passenger side inner vent blowing warm. On my vehicle the blend door will close but occasionally will stick open letting warm air in the cabin. I work with it by simply closing that vent but I believe there still a problem with blend door.

Hold on just one second here ..... we have a long talk about refridgeration, and mention of aerosols getting cold due to the change from liquid to a gaseous state, and it's somehow ALL done without ANY brake cleaner! The perfect example. Missing. I feel the need to write a stern letter of complaint to my local MP

Enjoyed seeing this, knowing the issues with the Doge ramakist ( a friend loves his Doge's ) I see a future where the dreaded dash disassembly is needed to finish the repair ( as everyone who has been around them has found out ) Great video though, enjoyed seeing actual diagnosis and not just a parts cannon show that most of the mechanics around me enjoy. ( including some Ford dealerships ).
