Busted! SCAMMING Mechanic Causes Damage! 4l60E Transmission

Someone rigged this Suburban to set trouble codes and have major problems, yet keep it able to function. It all started from a dead battery. The owner brought it to us for a second opinion after the crook tried to sell them a fuel pump and a new computer! Basically the other mechanic took advantage of the customer and caused a situation when the truck would run and rive normally with intermittent problems like the dead battery. The shop planned to sell the customer more parts like a fuel pump and even a new ECM computer. All of these parts are very expensive and difficult to locate. I looks like the shop planned to sell the parts and services without ever having to replace them. We found that the transmission wasn't shifting correctly and was slipping due to the botched wiring job. The vehicles was driving with the problem and it caused internal transmission damage. We removed the transmission and and found metal on the magnet and in the filter. The customer declined further repairs.

Spent 40 years in the automotive field. 25 years as a automotive instructor, and 20 years working on those darn cars. I am now 83 years old and have been retired for 20 years. I hated when mechanics tried to run a scam on innocent people. I always tried my best to do an honest job for a fair price. You sir, are a boon to our field. You did an honest job. Removing power from the trans will force it start in second, and shift to third, and maxes line pressure. Older GMT400 and GMT325 models definitely had ignition switch issues that caused this symptom. Somebody knew damn well what they were doing, they were going rip someone off. Driving around in 2-3 hi-cap for weeks equals a somewhat stupid customer though. That transmission is probably short on life now too, 4L60E wasn't known for being overly robust.

My favorite was and 80 year woman who had three horns on 04 ford fiest, as well as a flip out monitor radio, chrome 14” rims, and a an alarm that was not only the cheapest I’ve seen but after they drilled through the firewall they gave up and left the wires unconnected.

I am a 30 year L1 certified automotive tech and i still am going strong at the age of 53 . I have seen my share of greedy money hungry losers like this. I used to tell people that if youre worried about getting ripped off, you have the wrong mechanic or shop working on it. THE THINGS THAT I HAVE LEARNED IN THE PAST IS NO LONGER TAUGHT OR LEARNED PROPERLY BY THE Tech Schools. Those of us that kept up with new fuel/emission/electronic systems as manufacturers invented new ways of combustion but retained the old school knolwledge are a dying breed. It seems like most of the younger techs just out of tech school only learned the new stuff and get lost on the old school. Carbs were long gone by the time they graduated. I could tell within the first minute of the video that this guy is a dying breed. You definitely know your stuff. Kudos brother keep it up. God i feel old lmao

I always check when I take a car to the mechanic, under warranty or whatever and they're all crooks lol. Charge you for things that didn't happen and all kinds of crap, every time. Now with sealed transmissions you can't even check if they did anything. I've put white out on the nuts but they can see that and just scratch it off. Pit whatever oil they have even if it's not interested for the car, they don't give a crap about you or your car. You have no idea how many different shops i have taken my car and realized they didn't do their job right, and when I complained they just say they have high volume and they missed it on accident. My personal opinion if find an independent mechanic that has a good reputation. The shops are all crooks most of the time.

Over the 38 years of being a tech and stripping, building, many different types/brands of engine in my opinion manufacturers are trying achieve the impossible which is power, lightweight, economy etc and get all these in an engine like this comes at a cost. Years back things were slower heavier etc but rarely did you see failures like we get nowadays. Alot of modern engines won't tolerate neglect or abuse like their forerunners. The V6 isn't the smoothest of engines at best of times unlike the straight 6 which is naturally well balanced statically and dynamically. The current crop of Ford diesels are pretty poor anyway as I've had my filthy mitts on many and seem to be built to a cost and as seen here not very well designed 😔 keep up the great work guys and looking forward to the next video 👍

There are a lot of " mechanics". I brought a Focus in for a recall repair. No check engine light. When I picked it up, since there was no check engine light problem originally when I brought it in, I was shocked to see the check engine light on. The mechanic/dealership did not mention it was on. I looked up on internet what could cause this. One video mentioned that if connectors are not seated properly it would produce check engine light. I opened the hood and saw a connector that was not all the way in (sheer luck that I caught this) and pushed it all the way in. I asked another mechanic (not dealership) if they could let me know why the light is still on. I mentioned what had happened. He said the charge is $100 to determine why the light is on. Well, I continued to drive but my emissions was due so I was desperate to try and figure this out. I went to auto parts store and they tested and gave me the codes that apparently caused the check engine light. They said they could not clear the check engine light and I would have to order a part that could do that. I went to another auto parts store and they printed out what part "possibly" needed replacement, but they were careful to say this might not be the problem. I asked if they sold equipment that could clear the codes and light and they did find one in stock for $50. I bought it and figured out how to clear the check engine light and codes. Oh, my gosh, I was so relieved. I drove it to emissions testing, and no check engine light appeared and it passed inspection. So, all this time, though I luckily caught the problem, the check engine light could not just be cleared by any mechanics that I asked. I seriously do not trust mechanics now. What a racket against innocent consumers like me.

@@2009glories My parents' diesel 4 wheel drive had assorted problems (blown head gasket, etc). Went in to the mechanics for repair. Came back with more problems (DPF blocking up constantly, etc). Dad opened the bonnet, discovered that the mechanics didn't tighten the hose clamps on the duct connecting the turbo to the intake manifold. This of course meant that the engine was getting way less air than the MAF sensor was telling it, leading to over-fuelling and stupendous amounts of black smoke that was hidden by the long suffering DPF, causing it to clog and preventing the regens from working properly. It won't be going back to those muppets.

My grandpa was a mechanic who did all the work on their cars (and he owned a rather ridiculous number of cars - all of them old cars that he bought used for pretty cheap and fixed up). He ended up retiring around the late 2000s because he didn't understand all the computer stuff that were becoming more and more common in cars and he just wasn't able to avoid it anymore. Not a bad run for a farm kid that was born during the Great Depression! Thinking back, I really should have taken my 96 Cavalier to him and had him teach me how to fix it. Or even just paid him to fix it instead of going to various mechanic shops (I suspect Grandpa might have balked at teaching a "girl" to fix cars - us girls were always expected to stay up in the house with Grandma). It's not like Grandpa lived that far away! It was only 30 minutes!

Problem is he is hidden under layers of managers, owners , and service writers. There is probably way more honest mechanics then you think , but the unfairness of the guy out front supersedes it. In a big shop like this one , it’s tough because everyone that comes in is just a number. Lots of pressure to meet $ amount average on each car, and insensitive to have a higher bill for the service writer who may get a percentage or bonus depending. The whole setup is primed for corruption.

Service managers, to a large extent, work on commission. Always trying to upsell the customer. Also there are ways that the hours can be stolen from the mechanic. Document, document, document. CYA. Photos and video are excellent ways to prove or disprove. Consumers need to educate themselves as much as possible and KZbin is an invaluable resource!

My question is, was the trans making that noise BEFORE the customer took it to that other guy? If it was, the guy might have pulled the fuse for diagnostic purposes and just forgot to replace it...still his fault either way. The jumper wire to the fuel pump making it run 24/7 was certainly not an "accident" so that makes me suspect the fuse was done on purpose as well. The missing relay is very suspicious too. I can't think of any honest reason to remove it.

@@OverlandOne I doubt it had any noise to begin with. Pulling that fuse to put it in limp mode cooked it. The customer not knowing better probably ran the trans hot many times. The previous guy deserves his ass kicked.

Your right, be honest with people, I’m in Ohio and used to work at a motorcycle dealership. One guy came from W Va because he didn’t trust anyone but me. His Triumph Tiger had clutch problems from the factory. I tore it apart and found plates in backwards. After that, he wouldn’t let anyone but me work on it because I told him the truth. The feeling of being 100% honest is a great feeling.

The more I think about this one the more it makes me angry. In my estimation, by bypassing the fuel pump relay, the scammer also bypassed a critical safety system. If memory serves me right, the system is designed to turn off the fuel pump relay in any impact that results in deployment of the airbags in order to prevent the fuel pump from spraying fuel all over a hot engine or exhaust system in the event of a wreck that damages a fuel line. If this vehicle had been in such a wreck, a massive fire could easily have been the result.

A very good point, and it makes me think that if this case appears before a magistrate and that point and the evidence supporting it (the introduced wire jumping the fuel pump to remain on) is brought to light then it might go very badly for the mechanic who put his illicit profit ahead of a client and his family's safety. This crook richly deserves it.

Oh not just that, because it was a DIRECT connection with no fuse there was also no overdraw protection on that circuit and no way for the computer to control the duty cycle meaning that pump was running at FULL CYCLE the ENTIRE time the vehicle was running, causing the potential for the pump to overheat or to start an electrical fire from extended run time AND causing excessive wear on said pump.

I thought there was a G-switch in some vehicles that shuts down the pump (maybe a few other things) in case of an impact. Read about having to reset it manually somewhere. @@trebormcfarland8708 The blue wire could've been piggy-backing off another fuse, giving a higher chance of blowing that fuse, but yeah it could've been on the "hot" side instead

Start do my own repairs also, after getting rip off.. asked my local shop to replace my front shock, they instead replace all the front and rear lower and upper arm, ball joint and even cv shaft without even asking me first and charge a fortune.. the parts which they replace are still good, still have tight tolerance.. thats the last time i'll be ever bring my car to the shop.. now i have all the tools including the scanning tool and start doing a repair jobs in my garage for all my family and relatives.

Really enjoyed your video. As a former trans mechanic I can tell you it's a good idea to flush all the transmission fluid along with what you did. Also I hope you removed the old filter seal out of the pump before you put the new filter in. That is the only two things I seen that I would have done differently. Good job on the diagnostics. ​@james RA Not always, but I would agree w/ your sentiment. I've taken my cars to the same mechanic since I was 17yrs old on stuff I couldn't do. He was always known in the neighborhood as fair, honest, and doing good work. I took my car to him a few weeks ago as it was throwing a code on a sensor that was going to require me taking the power steering pump, water pump, and alternator off to get to (thank you GM!).. Not doing all that. He got me fixed up and mentioned he was retiring from his shop. As we talked he said he'd put a pole barn behind his house and had just had a lift installed, and was going to basically work off craigslist/word of mouth in his retirement years rather than sitting on the corner of a busy ass intersection in the city. Needless to say, I made sure I got his address and phone number.

before I got into cars I got a new 1972 CB450 DOHC Honda and that winter when I couldn't ride I tore the engine down to the last nut and bolt. Honda manuals are very through. I put over 20K on that bike and redlined it as often as possible with no problems. After that I had the confidence to fix anything. Just remember If all else fails read the directions.

That trans ignition fuse will make the transmission start in 3rd gear. Removing that fuse when trying to diagnose a trans problem is helpful. If you pull the fuse and trans starts in 3rd gear and drives, it typically means the trans is fine internally vs electronic issue or stuck check ball issue.

Great video sir. It reminds me of a job that I done awhile back, where a lady brought her suv to me and pointed out that she had taken it to a shop and gotten it tuned up, but still misfiring. After diagnosing the problem, I found that the previous tech had only changed 3 plugs and 3 wires on the front, because the ones on the back were harder to get too, plus for the customer, it's hard to see. The guy charged her 425.00 for 3 plugs and wires, plus the parts were cheap also. I replaced all parts OEM parts, problem solved. She went back to previous shop, presented her case, tech fired, and she was compensated. Oh well. Thank God for honest techs. Tkx keep up the good work.
