Thanks for the hint on timing chain diagnosis, I took the valve cover off and saw top chain guide was fine and chain was still tight. Turned out my noise was alternator bearing and water pump. The engine noise sounded the same as a failing timing chain.

@@MayoCarsDR yes I know that otherwise goodluck getting it in. Anyways i found it did release even though I didn't hear the clicks. Guess engine took time to settle everything back into place. But its running like a top and the click is gone. That engine was torn into by someone else because the timing marks on the chain never matched up to the cams so I made my own on the chain.

I Have a 2010 with only 30K miles and the tensioner is bad! The spring gets weak over time and it needs to be replaced! The Miles have no impact on when it goes bad! Lexus Recalled this Tensioner on their VVT engine because it is a safety hazard but Toyota feels you have air bags and you should be fine :O( I just got back from the dealer and got a mechanics opinion that If You can install this Part Be very careful not to alter the timing while turning the engine without the tensioner being released As specially if you have high miles and the timing chain has stretched so I wondered if you could install the tensioner with the clip released? One Comes out and the other goes in without turning anything and the Mechanic says you CAN! No need to remove the valve Cover!
@jonathanratliff4780
@jonathanratliff4780 Жыл бұрын
@@dugeep Bit of tech info for your help. The tensioner for the timing chain is oil pressure based there is no spring that is something very old. The passages for the oil to this system are very small and if oil is not changed often in a low mileage car it will varnish and gum up, restricting passages and cause detriment to the tensioning system just like building a plaque in arteries to the heart. This is why your tensioner system has gone bad.

My 03 corolla has that same groaning sound when in gear and idling. Sometimes does it in neutral at idle also. when RPM's come up a bit, sound seems to goes away. Does it with hot or cold engine. Was the top guide (im assuming you called it the engine dampener) broke off when you first showed the loose chain on the first engine? Or was that an additional part added? A bit confused on that part because if it WAS there on the first engine, where did it end up? in the oil pan? Or are you saying it was worked on previously and someone failed to reinstall it afterwards? Ours is making this sound and its very concerning. Need to try and fix it asap myself if possible. IF its just replacing the Crankshaft tensioner, Im seeing a lot of videos doing it without pulling the top cover, which didn't look to bad. OR, do I need to pull the cover and verify that I have an engine dampener in place along with changing the Tensioner? REALLY hope you find this comment and can assist if possible. Thanks!!

Great video, really nice details. I have a 2011 Toyota Highlander with the 2TR-FE is a 2.7 L engine. It has a strong rattle noise in the engine bay, which is loudest when in Drive or Reverse with the brake on and apply and let off the gas to make the engine go from low revs to higher revs and back to low revs. The car has 265,000+ miles on it. I use synthetic oil and change it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. Possible problems could be with chain tensioner, chain dampener (if it has one), throttle body, alternator bearings, engine mount, VVT gears and/or VVT actuator, water pump, etc. Can you narrow the list down at all? Also, other friends with high mileage Toyotas have suggest do an engine oil flush (AutoZone or Amsoil) but I don't like that idea too much. Any thoughts? Thank you again for the great video.

Not an expert, but I've been preparing to do this and from what I've seen there's hardly any oil that comes out when changing the tensioner. I would reccomend to change time the tensioner change with your next oil change or if you're very careful not to let contaminates in you could just top up that small amount that comes out. My main concern would be with contaminates getting in and possibly clogging up the holes in the variable valve timing system or something.

I noticed in your Video that one Corolla (SILVER One) had the Chain Damper already installed and the other corolla the (Dark Grey One) Did Not! I called my local dealer and they said that my 2010 has the Damper P/N 13562-0T020 but I replaced the Tensioner thanks to your Video (Thank You So Much!) but My chain is still hitting the Cover both when you first start the car and on Acceleration! My 2010 Corolla only has 36k miles and I didn't think anything was wrong with the tensioner I took out comparing the two, Latching and Unlatching them they seemed the same to me and after installing a new one made no difference, My Question is: Is It possible that the Chain damper is not in there even thou Toyota Dealer Says It is? Because if the Damper is in there NO WAY COULD THAT CHAIN Hit the Cam Cover! I guess I might have to take the Cover Off But What year is the Dark Grey Corolla in your Video? It looks just like my LE 2010? Thank You :O)
