I have Peugeot 308 with 1.6VTi engine (same engine is build in MINI also) , and it is very specific engine with lots of things that can and do go wrong. So it would be very helpful if you make one video about that engine. What can we do about oil consumption (some says replacment of the PCV valve solves the problem but I kinda do not believe in that statement).

One of the MIT open course engineering videos demonstrated what "noise" would do to a chip that is looking for s clean "yes/no" (1 or 0). The data sheets for semiconductors give you the tolerance for each particular chip. "0 or NO" may be from zero to 1.8 volts. "1 or YES" may be from 3.5 to 5 volts. If voltage spikes (static) are introduced into the line, the voltage may drive past the point where the chip goes past the tolerated voltages and the receiving chips don't understand what the transmitting chip is trying to say. Odd that all 3 fans failed at the same time. It could also be that the failure of one fan would not produce enough noise to drive the communication past the "threshold of misunderstanding", but once the 3rd fan failed, it was too much noise for the communication line to tolerate. If these fans have brushes, sparking will eventually occure as the brushes, commutator and bearings wear. Side note: My cousin worked in the Silicon Valley in the early days. He told me that a big part of the code written for any program contained tons of fault checking and data verification, ie, did you put in a number where a letter was required..did you enter that you were 20 feet tall and weighed a kilo (etc, etc). Dirty connections, broken wires from too much twisting, kinks, etc caused many communication problems. The "hand shake" contained tests of communication. Good video...showing the on/off waveforms illustrated the problem very well. I will post the MIT to this if I find it.

Dan, excellent diagnosis. It demonstrates that as independent diagnostic techs we need access to OEM tech info. It would have been interesting to see if there was any freeze frame data available with the DTC to see if it showed the battery cooling fans were commanded on at the time the DTC was logged. Would also have liked to see the current trace on the scope of the old fans verses the new fans could reveal any back EMF or perhaps some AC voltage leaking on to the DC circuit. Just thinking out loud here.

@@AlessandroGenTLe tbf that doesn't look like normal dpf regen. theres white smoke coming out from the front wheel arch in first video. DPF regen doesn't cause that. AFAIK DPF regen occur at 2.5k rpm at highway speeds in diesel cars. don't know if that is the case with gen 1 DPF cars. second one is forced DPF regen which doesn't happen in everyday driving conditions. they are wantonly revving their cars to clog up the DPF filter so that the ECU is forced to burn off the soot to reduce Exhaust pressure even though the car is stationary. this causes incomplete combustion of excessive diesel fuel producing more soot and nasty exhaust. so unless you revv your diesel like a maniac while stationary or in stop n go traffic you'll never face this situation in your daily driving.

Excellent video.. A twist from the other side... The software application have seen the problem and given us a DTC. If the application is well developed it has a ringbuffer in form of a transient recorder that records pre and post that event (DTC) automatically. Sometimes in some systems(trains) you can on top of it set the event in the software algoritm as a trigger and choose a couple of signals to be recorded (pre and post) that you suspect. But thoose functions is buried deeper inside the manufacturers system. If the systems are designed as I am mentioning you would not need to hook up a scoope to solve the problem. The surrounding information is collected and sent up to the cloud and you can see it there. But that is on swedish trainmanagement system and not on cars.

Wonder if a new brush set would take care of the problem or perhaps a power feed circuit from the controller to the fan assemblies that has better signal filtering. I'm assuming that a cleaning of the commutator rings and new brush set would have solved the problem if they were replaceable. Increased arcing at the brush-commutator contact is probably the source of the noise that's finding its way back to the hybrid battery controller and giving it fits.

What about using some high frequency filter caps for fan motors to get rid of noise? Great video, clone yourself, not to many techs would take the time to properly diagnose the problem correctly.

Thanks for the feedback Alfred. I'll examine those fans on a rainy Day to see what's wrong with them

Another great video DAN ...A bulletin is generally the result of some poor guy spending hours / days actually diagnoising the fault so others do not have too

I know i make alot of those Bulletins myself🤣

A question for Diagnose Dan. Wouldn't a car with the DPF removed have an accumulation of black soot on the inside of the pipe? I've noticed all of the diesel vehicles here in the US with DPFs have 'squeaky clean' tailpipes. In fact we found a truck with a cracked DPF by seeing the sooty tailpipe. BTW, keep up the good work. You are an excellent teacher!

Soot are the larger particles we can actually see with the naked eye. The smaller particles that we don't see are even more dangerous for our health. A DPF filters Both. Alot of times when a DPF is removed the Car is also tuned, that is the main cause for the black smoke

If turning on the fans disrupts communication with the fan controller, how are you able to turn them off using a scantool? #FunLogicQuestions
@CubbyTech3 жыл бұрын
It's likely a different communication channel / network like CAN bus. The specific one he is monitoring is from the Hybrid control unit to the BMS - which wouldn't carry this kind of control stuff.
@Diagnosedan3 жыл бұрын
The fans also have a direct Line to the Hybrid controle module.

you didnt explain why the fans were causing the disturbance, that would be nice to know. was it magnetic field issue or what?!!!

The bloopers make get me every time lol, They doing the dpf thing over here in uk as they been trailing it for around 2 years, been warning all the boys who been getting deletes that even with a empty dpf they will soon fail the mot's, then spend more money making it "oem" again to get it back on the road Pukka vid buddy 👍
@Diagnosedan3 жыл бұрын
I think in the UK there is even a £1500 fine for Dpf removal

@@Diagnosedan up to £1000 on cars, and £2500 on vans, but also depends what other powers the police or vosa (they are the police of the road but more authority) decide to enforce such as seizure of the vehicle or destruction of the vehicle, but i feel they dont push those often unless its a repeat offender and/or they want to make a example of them, Also i believe (not certain) it will be classed as a "dangerous defect" on the fail sheet which means the vehicle can not be driven again so if the test station are not doing the work, a recovery vehicle must take it to the garage to have it repaired, after the repair they can only drive it on the road to the test station for a retest

Dan great job, mine doesn't accelerate, when it's on the highway, suddenly, it's drops... What could be the cause.

Great video Dan. But what was wrong with the fans? Worn commutators producing RFI?
@MrAntonioxi3 жыл бұрын
Dan could you perform an exhaust gas measurement during dpf regeneration? how much stuff comes out then .. somewhere those particles end up?
@Diagnosedan3 жыл бұрын
Nothing Comes out the tailpipe. The soot gets burned and the ashes Stay behind in the Dpf.

Question about hybrid cars. I am a guy who likes music alot, and in my toyota hybrid, the stock stereo just, really sucks. So, in my old cars it was super easy to install a new amp, sub and such, just hook it up to batteri and give it a remote, done. But a hybrid car is not the same. (as far as I know) so, what I was thinking of doing (to not allow the battery to be drained while playing music) I would add another gel battery, then hook that up to the cars 12v starter battery (not the hybrid one) and put a relay inbetween. The relay beeing that kind that shuts off when the main battery is below a certain threshold, and enables charging when the cars stock 12v is back up, so that I would never drain the cars battery (thus leaving the hybrid system with alot of faults) Would that be the most "correct" way to do this, or is there a more correct way to do this? (it's a 2019 yaris hybrid) I am aware that this will reduce the milage a bit, but I am ok with that. Thanks in advance :)

Interesting one Dan. But CAN BUS is supposed to compensate for external noise on the signal. I might have missed this if I listened to network theory! Also, no single fan was causing the issue? I wished you had diagnosed one of the bad fans to see why it was causing so much noise. But thanks again for a great video. Hybrid issues are only going to become more common.
