Awesome find Bernie but this type of problem is somewhat common. This is a pull-down system, when the wide-tooth piece of metal passes the CKP sensor, the signal is pulled low. This is where we see the wide gap, low voltage, in the CKP waveform. The voltage goes high with the air gap in front of the sensor, then when the tooth arrives in front of the sensor, the voltage goes low, repeating when the air gap arrives in front of the sensor, the voltage goes high again. When we see the voltage stay high, we assume an air gap, in this case, a tooth that is too far of a distance to be picked up by the sensor, if the voltage was to stay low more than expected we could assume metal to metal short circuit by another piece of metal or a collection of metal chunks or filings between 2 good teeth. The bent metal of different types of vehicle systems is a common problem due to poor maintenance practices such as prybars or misuse of tools in the wrong area, such as what happened here. An engine may start but won't rev up due to a 24x wheel partially bent on the back of a GM harmonic balancer (HB) thanks to a prybar being used to remove the HB.

Very nice, BT. Besides a visual inspection, i cannot think of a way to troubleshoot this WITHOUT A SCOPE. I'm thinking the CKP code plus 2 sensors should trigger the tech to eyeball all components, but that bent tooth is very subtle. Great case study to promote use of scopes 👍.

One interesting part is the PCM set a circuit code, so you'd think it was a wiring, pcm, connection, or sensor problem. In actuality the PCM was expecting to see a signal change in a certain window of time, but it never saw the change.

How did you know it was a bad crank pattern without a known good? The missing tooth was so close to the large tooth I would have thought maybe it could have been part of the design of that particular tone wheel if I had never seen a known good for that car. Granted most crank sensor signals I've seen only have the one missing tooth or large tooth. Doesn't mean they can't be built differently.
@scientist1003 жыл бұрын
It is usually a square gap, other usually have like an ac wave but there is a unique ramp for each turn as well.
@benb46883 жыл бұрын
@@scientist100 I get that's the usual but what if the designer of the engine/software decided the pcm needs to see one large high gap followed by a large low gap to determine one full revolution?

Experience. The reference waveform will be in his head, he will have scoped so many of these engines over time. You would do exactly the same. "Hey, that doesn't look right!"
@benb46883 жыл бұрын
@@simonparkinson1053 If I knew what a good one looked like I would of but this was a 2018 I haven't had a reason to scope one yet not sure he did either cause that car is so new can't imagine many of them failing yey. I am not questioning the diagnosis it was spot on just trying to figure out how he got there so I can learn to. If I would of seen it in the middle of the pattern I would have said hey that ain't right but at the very end I didn't see a problem with it just thought it was a characteristic of that vehicle having never seen one, I would have thought maybe signal is good at the sensor but what about all the way to the pcm and spun my wheels chasing that before I circled back around to the sensor wave form again.
@Lambros_Stefaneas3 жыл бұрын
@@benb4688 only the big gap is ok to make the synchronisation .doesn't need a low gap after the dig one.actually, is better, to have more teeth to read , so the pcm, can know more accurate,the position of the crankshaft. And the big gap, is never on any cylinder TDC,because of that, so the pcm have more teeth to read and do the calculations. As someone with a shop I like the video series except he’s using a software that pretty much nobody else has or ever heard of. It’s not snap on or autel or any other common tool. While the principals apply it makes it Impossible to follow along on some of these tests because of the tool and software he’s using.
@jimr5493 жыл бұрын
It's definitely out of reach or justifiable for a backyard mechanic but it is available. Bernie has certainly become one with it.
@corvette_rick3 жыл бұрын
@@jimr549 I wasn’t saying it’s not available. I’m saying up until His videos I had never heard of it. And the other places I’ve worked never used it either. Shops mainly stick to the big three. Mac, Matco and snap on. I’m not saying it’s better or worse just that it’s so different then what is the norm you can’t really follow along with your tool because it doesn’t have that feature.
@DIYDaveOK3 жыл бұрын
The tool is definitely very different, but really all it does is change the way it reports data. Most scan tools just display a PID and it's value. Bernie's system effectively coverts the displays of numeric data, like fuel trims, DTC's, into a dynamic summary form. The dynamic switch of fuel trims from rich to lean via visual cue is a really smart way to represent that data. This is a scan tool with a great GUI design on top of it, and I'm guessing it was developed with the aid of a tech at the outset or by a tech with a good software development background. It is exceptionally expensive which definitely puts it out of reach of a backyard mech or small-budget garage .. but Bernie also does great videos and it's great to learn from such an expert!
