Diagnosing a Misfire When Affected Cylinder Can’t Be Accessed Easily (Infiniti)

2011 Infiniti G37 3.7L. In this video you will see one way to help test a cylinder misfire when the affected cylinder is buried under the intake manifold and can’t be accessed easily. Andy will show how to use a scope to look at secondary ignition waveforms. This will help you quickly test instead of having to remove the intake manifold. Turn the brightness of the laptop screen all the way up. The backlight is PWM and the camera shutter picks it up as flicker when less than 100% duty cycle.

Great video. I find it good practice to always replace spark plugs when you have a failed ignition coil has a worn-out spark plug can cause premature ignition coil damage. And with iridium plugs visual inspection does not tell you everything . Unless you knew they have recently been replaced with good quality plugs. Recently came across your KZbin channel and good content and your customers are lucky to have you.

On the Nissans I typically pull amp ramps of the injectors and coils. Typically the coil and or injector that has failed will show low amp draw. Once you sync it with a trigger you can see which coil or injector is bad. Sometimes the Nissan/Infiniti cars will give a P0300 code. In which case you won't know which cylinder is firing. Great video. I like how straight forward it is. No hiding behind procedural mumbo jumbo. And there's always little nuggets in videos like these. I have that pick up paddle that's thin. I've had it for probably 15 years. And never really thought of using in conjunction with my scope.

You probably already know and have them, Joe's Auto Electric, Joe Caci, has C.O.P. testers that work amazing! Plug into banana jack leads on my Zeus and you get a sharp clean capture. Everything the guy makes is gold!!

As long as I have been working on cars, i've never heard any tech not swapping coils. that's like an industry standard. i've been doing it since the invention of coil on plug coils.

Usually I agree with you but, not this time. I have a 2011 G37 and no need to remove the intake manifold to get to the coils and plugs for that matter. Just the intake tubes and throttle bodies.

If i can’t get in there with a Probe, i use an Amp Clamp at Ignition Coil fuse. Find your sync with any coil and see a drop on current ramp of suspected bad coil.

Great video! I started selling all the. Oils and plugs to my clients and as a start I always tell them that this is a very expensive repair and I leave the ball in their court. Andy, get yourself a set of Rotkee secondary ignition leads that look like small black buttons at the ends that come with double sided tape to stick to each coil. Yes you might have to slightly move the TB to attach lead to last coil but you will be able to see all your coils at the same time on your scope this way. This is the way I have done it on these 3.7 engines.

I use my thinktool pro On a 2007 , f150 I use special functions,,power balance,,found a bad spark plug,,switched coils.miss did not move , changed plug, fixxed truck

If they are due or close to due by mileage we would recommend doing them at the same time. Sometimes clients don't know when they were done so we will pull one and look at the wear on it and then advise them based off of that.

Solid diag. I would have went through the fuse box with the amp clamp but as you stated. It was secondary event. I always put in spark plugs with it as you stated. Hate come backs

We did but once discussing with client they had them replaced them 6 months ago. We ended up only doing one coil because they didn’t have the money to do all 6 at this time.

Would you be able to see this problem current ramping the coils? Did you perform relative compression test off camera and injector waveform?

Depends if its a shorted coil issue! I like to have my amp meter one of the circuits (whichever is easiest to get to) and a secondary waveform. Helps to see if its a shorting problem or a firing problem 😅
