I've owned my 2003 GTS since 2003 and I've been going through doing a lot of maintenance on it lately. And your videos have been a wonderful tool. Much appreciated.

Much appreciated sir been chasing this for 2 years and don’t have much time to dig into it and asked multiple mechanics and just had the timing belt replaced so figured it wasn’t that and found the tensioner never got installed and low and behold yup same problem so thank you much

Wow, just discovered youtube flagged my own comment on my own freaking video here- see pinned comment that should now be visible. I posted a video about a secondary tensioner- my timing belt slipped again due to it (now rectified).

I had a 96 eclipse in the Fast and Furious 2 days :) it wasn’t a terrible car, but I had an NA version with the larger wheels on it. Good old fashioned troubleshooting is lacking a lot in todays generation. Everyone wants the answer, but the quest to find the answer builds character, and adds knowledge to a persons repertoire

Ahh yes, the Eclipse RS with the Dodge Neon engine lol. Not too bad in a super light Neon coupe with a 5-speed and all manual options like the 96 we had, but the Eclipse was several hundred pounds heavier. One of my friends had one of those too and it just randomly threw a rod when we were out driving around in it lol. And yeah if you don't want to throw money away, then you have to learn to properly diagnose. This video helps people do just that...

@@92kbuilds-mn2lk yeah my eclipse was not fast. Ironically it ran best with factory exhaust manifold, and aftermarket cat and muffler. Once I put a header on it, started burning oil. Still it was a fun car.

The two small holes in the tensioner pulley are there so that a special Mitsubishi tool can be used to hold the pulley up tight against the belt while tightening the nut. Basically the special tool is a straight piece of metal with two pins on one end which fit into the holes on the pulley. Then you rotate the tool counter-clockwise to push the pulley against the belt and hold it there while tightening the center nut. You can actually make your own tool using two bolts and a metal bar long enough for good leverage but short enough for clearance while rotating. Yes, a pry bar can also be used but is a bit trickier to manage.

So i have experienced a lot with this motor and have learned that you can not red line this engine like you want without having timming belt issues. It just can't handle the stress! Your best bet is to work on reducing the back pressure of the exhaust to gain speed. I did the impossible and split the exhaust with one cat removed and shortened (front side) exiting under the passenger door and the other full length, each at 2.5 inch . It's hell going over speed bumps because the muffler under the driver side door always crashes on top of a speed bump. My engine is in a 1996 Dodge Avenger without the mass air flow and it runs great with leas hiccups than what your going thru. The only problem with my car is the transmission. It's an auto. I've driven it very hard and it has issues where it won't move until it's warmed up. And it has to come to a complete stop at stop signs to down shift back into 1st or it will go into limp mode. Great car but I wish it where a manual. However as an automatic. It kicks ass in a 40 roll and 60 to 110 on the interstate. With its split exhaust ser up. It takes little effort to gain speed on the highway! I'm talking it it moves up in speed with leas changes to the rpm. You'd have to see old school cars run like this to understand what I mean.

I redline the crap out of this thing now that I finally got it properly fixed after discovering the secondary tensioner, literally bouncing it off the redline weekly and have not had a single issue since. If yours still skips time if redlined then you got something going on that still needs addressed... improper tension, failing tensioners, worn belt, worn cam sprockets/gears or drive gear on the belt, or something leaking allowing it to slip.

@92kbuilds-mn2lk The automatic revs hard and high up to 55k rmp from a 60 roll then slams hard into gear. Or it slams hard if I let off just as it shifts.

Really great diagnosis and analysis here. I had a 4G Eclipse GT with a similar tensioner situation. I also missed it the first time round but luckily caught it before everything went back together.

Had someone change the intake gaskets and now it pops as soon as you try to start it. I told them to stop and I would pick it up. They thought it was timing thing and started tearing things apart. I finally have it and have parts in the trunk. Great videos and editing.
