Diagnosing Another Dodge Charger - Turns Over But WON'T START

In this video, I'm diagnosing another Dodge Charger. It turns over but doesn't start. It broke down on the side of the hwy, and the customer had it towed into the shop.
The diagnostic process on this one was pretty simple, but first I had to charge the battery. You can't really diagnose anything with a bad battery. You can use this process on just about any vehicle. I didn't use any special tools on this one, as I try to put myself in the typical DIY person's shoes.

Good detailed video man I got a dodge Magnum doing the exact same thing I checked fuel pump it's clicking ,I did the spark plug test no fire ,not too long ago I changed the fuel pump when it did the same thing and it ended up being the ecm I fixed that and it was fine now it's turning with no fire

Hi Alex, I have a 2007 charger 3.5, car was running and it shut off. Towed it home and put my OBD2 and I got P0340 and suggested to replace cam and crank sensor and possibly the VVT sensor! I replace a couple of fuses and noticed I didn’t get any spark at the plugs while cranking?

So I have 2009 Charger with the 2.7L. It died yesterday while driving. It will not start back up but cranks good. I tested the battery and battery was weak after charging back up so I replaced my battery. I’ve checked all ground straps and they are good. I have spark, air and power but seems like its not getting fuel. I’m getting 12.62V at the connector on the fuel pump when the key is turned on and I can hear the pump but still a no start. All fuses and relays are good. Serpentine belt spins just fine while cranking. I’m thinking the fuel pump is either weak or bad. What are your thoughts?

Check the fuel pump, fuse for the fuel pump if its getting enough electric power from the fuse box, and check if there is enough fuel in it . Listen if the fuel pump is working it make a waning sound. I knew it was the fuel pump from start

Excuse me Alex I have a question for you. I have a 2010 Dodge Charger 3.5 Sxt. I'm changing my fuel pump in the morning but I have to go get my part from the part house. There's two parts that fit my 18 gallon tank. One is a Terminal 5 plug and the other one is Terminal 4 plug(which is more money with Dodge House recommended. The question is that is mine a four or the five? Do I leave my gasoline open to go get the part 🤔?

Good morning, I have 2007 Dodge Charger with the 2.7 liter engine. The car starts with quick starting fluid and dies immediately. I probed the 4th and 5th wire as you did on this video, but I am not getting any volts. The fuse is good. It was the timing chain tensioner that was broken in half. The worst mistake was following this guy’s videos on changing time chains. Did everything to the every detail following his instructions, but at the end it wasn’t working. So I ended up junking the car unfortunately. Bought a brand new Tacoma truck instead.

If it start good when is cold I guess the battery is good but when it's get a little hot it won't start again it has to be some sensor that it's overhearing you need a diagnostic to check for a code

What about when you turn it over? It does a continuous turnover when you turn the key and won’t stop just turning over until you shut the key off. Like it’s stuck on turning over.

Mine sounds like this one. Ive replaced both fuel pumps, clockspring, steering angle sensor, all 4 speed sensors, crank shaft sensor, cam shaft sensor, throttle position sensor, and mass airflow sensor. Changed all the sparkplugs. Fuel pump turns on. Battery, alternator, and starter are all good. I have spark. What am i missing?

Regular Gas is what’s recommended for that car, premium gas will not benefit your engine so you’re better off sticking with the recommended regular unleaded.

What engine do you have. To start off good battery and a scanner if any thing is chewed up the scanner will point you in the right direction for example code display #2 injector Circuit low, means there is a damage wire

That code indicates a week or dead battery make sure you have 100% charged battery and try again if it still doesn’t start you may have another issue. Follow my steps in diagnosing the problem and you will be good

@@BC_nopowder you can only test the alternator once the vehicle is running but if you think it’s the alternator you can always remove it and take it to AutoZone and they will test it for free. An alternator will never cause a vehicle to not start you literally can remove an alternator and the vehicle will start and run until the battery goes dead, let me rephrase that a little bit a normal functioning alternator that spins freely a locked up alternator may cause the engine not to turn over

Ran the codes and a camshaft sensor popped up along with the fuel pump codes listed. I’m at my wits end.

I have not, I’m selling the POS, changed the sensors. Fuel pump kicks on., got spark, jus won’t start. Makes no sense.

Jus the camshaft sensors, and fuel pump (gas hand don’t work), but pump is still functioning. I changed the sensors, cleared the codes and it acts like it wants to start but jus doesn’t.

Would a vacuum leak give similar symptoms to that of a bad catalytic converter ?

Not really vacuum leaks will cause higher idle engine may stall or run rough.some symptoms of a bad cat are loss of power, bad mpg,engine misfires, exhaust noise . Both will throw a check engine light

@@AlexTheCarDoctor if the leak was so large ,it would run bad ,if it did run,high idle will not play a factor wich could give bad cat symptoms but remember that alot of things are in symptoms.vacum leaks can cause cats to go bad due unburnt gas.mabey thats what he means.you guys are great keep the good work and thank you.

Will it have this problem if it will start randomly but shuts off after driving for about 15 miles

Sounds like a bad crankshaft sensor. Will it start back up? Are there any lights on the dash

@@AlexTheCarDoctor yes it will start I had the throttle body replaced and also crank sensor it drives about a good 30 miles then shuts off again I leave it for a couple of hours and it cranks fine I was told to replace the fuel pump seems like everybody is kinda giving me the run around

Check engine light on and lighting bolt looking light comes on when it breaks down I leave it go back to a few hours later the lights are off it runs fine until a repeated process

If you have a code reader send me the check engine light code if not take it to your local part store they will pull the code for free. That doesn’t sound like fuel pump sounds maybe like a cam sensor

Do you have a scanner if so it needs to be able to read engine data so you can check The RPM reading

Without engine rpm reading the engine will not start and most likely you have a bad crank sensor or wiring problem

@@AlexTheCarDoctor check engine gave me codes for throttle body and neutral safety switch both have been replaced it’s just the check engine now at first it was a red bolt but it’s gone now

@@AlexTheCarDoctor I put some carb and choke in the intake manifold started up for a bit I’m assuming fuel pump is not getting its power I can’t find the right relay for the trunk do u think it can be the wiring harness as well ?
