Footnote for the second variant: If you wrap the yarn clockwise when you purl, the right side can be knit through the back loop without needing to slip and re-seat them. After knitting a swatch of this I learned that since its worked in stitch pairs twisting around each other, it decreases width by a lot. And its a good idea when casting off to make a decrease for every cast off stitch.
