I don't believe the Kona was really designed with that in mind. As far as a city car and country road car here in Texas my Kona Limited covers the bases really well. Absolutely love my Kona Limited fun to drive, good-looking and fast!

@@mr.2cents.846 The Limited is the way to go for sure goog choice!!! The 1.6T combined with the 7 speed dual clutch transmission is a killer combo. Puts the Kona in the 6 seconds kinda fast club.

It could have made it if they kept pushing but it’s a dct and not a regular automatic transmission so it will not work as well as the regular automatic in this test .

I think the tests on these conditions were cautious but realistic. They represent the slower mature driving options of careful gas and maneuver so as not to kick up dirt and rocks and mud to the car. Yes, the test driver could have hit the gas earlier and never stopped but how would that really show the slow moving capability of the AWD system. I have the 1.6 without AWD. I would have purchased the AWD if there was a vehicle available at my local dealer. Now glad I didn't sweat not having that option. I don't plan any off-road excursions. But if I did and had this set up I would have been in for a rude awakening. A good review which leaves users to determine for themselves driving style and car capabilities... to each their own. Thx.

I know, lets get an AWD car and see if it can Off Road. set up to fail, I never expected the Kona to 4WD. AWD is about road grip, power and stability. the AWD lock is more for muddy unsealed roads, driveways, etc. where there's decent weight on the Front where more torque/power is able to be planted.

It sucks so badly because of the poor transmission used. If it were a conventional automatic transmission (which they do offer) I feel that it would have performed much more favorably.

Could applying the brakes or handbrake help in this case? It seems like a good of fashion brake modulation would have helped.

It's not an off road vehicle this video was good because it showed that the vehicle is not capable enough for rough terrain use that is unless the rough terrain is a smooth dirt road still for what the car is designed for it's a nice stylish car

It's a great suburban vehicle, not intended for serious offroading,hate DCT's conventional 6 speed auto is best with 2 ltr donk,if you must try and climb those slopes do it a bloody sight faster.

And why would you buy a vehicle that is closer to a car than an suv, and try this? I don't see anyone doing "diagonal tests" on the Romeo Giulia.. because the Awd system was not designed to go offroad or to create illusions of taking on the wild outback safari. It does a excellent job maintaining traction at highway speed hydroplane or snow pockets. skid control in those bad weather maneuvers to avoid an accident occasions. Can it handle some gravel and dirt roads yes. If your looking for a sporty car get the 1.6 and keep it on pavement it's not a Subaru. As for these people commenting on fail blah blah blah get bent. I'd love to spend 20 minutes to apply years of experience and build a list of things the vehicle they end up buying cannot do as well. So lame. And center difflock just changes the front to rear bais to 50/50 its not differential locks. You want lockers buy a Rubicon for $40k. This is a great commuter or collage student leaving home kind of car who needs good milage low maintenance and offers some utility.

Overheating no, it's because we used our head and STOP when we smelled the clutch odor... and we decided to put an end to the test to prevent damage to this little SUV.

While true, and yes it is good they discovered this. Surely they could smell the transmission long before the warning. At least there is a warning. Sadly this car is now off my shopping list since I actually use my vehicles in light off road applications. My wife's 2016 Escape with AWD does great on similar terrain here in Alaska.

Almost every clutch which is not build for goldmine hills will overheat kids so pls dont pay attention to these ppl. These AWD systems are made for sleepy pavements nothing more these clutches are not differentials.

The front wheel is spinning freely, and the torque is not shifted to the rear non-slipping wheels. Wheel articulation is also very poor. Something seriously wrong here.

I wonder if you did same test on direct competitors from Mazda, Toyota and Honda. They have significantly less power than Kona and some don't even offer AWD. Yet they claim to be a compact SUV. They are priced similarly too. What do you think of them?

we tried to lock and unlock, it doesn't change much if you switch TCS OFF, get ready for a smoke show and when the rpm get to redline the transmission falls to neutral and you roll back for a few seconds.

2004 tucson would have definitely failed this test... it has open diffs, front and back, and traction control only modulates engine power.

You may as well be testing it's flight capabilities. It's not designed for diagonally traversing asphalt slopes so what exactly is the point? And even those that pass - when will their owners ever need these unnatural extremes - running from cops? Isn't more realistic to stick to conditions the average AWD SUV buyer thinks about - ie snow/ice or other adverse road conditions?

You're testing a scenario that by your own admission an infinitesimally small percentile of typical SUV owners will ever encounter in any typical urban/suburban conditions. *Secondly, your 'test' means what - no one should ever buy a FWD car 'just in case'??? Over and over again I see in your comments section peple talking about offroading - When's the last time anyone with sense took a family SUV offroading?? You only see tat in 'stupid driver' videos - *they aren't designed for that* Sorry, but it would be absurd for anyone considering an AWD system *for NON-offroading applications* to disqualify a vehicle based on this test.

You really dont have a point, you're defending manufacturers lazyness. Every car with a well programmed traction contro and enough ground clearance could be able to climb any diagonal slope. No matter the drivetrain. It doesnt matter if the owner will never be in that situation, if it could be done, it must be done. This is a great test and gives no way to any ignorance. terrain is asphalt so nobody can blame nothing but the traction controls inabillity to transfer power to the wheels with grip. Nontheless, this car would go up if you had just floored it and waited for the tcs to make up its mind.

Have you watched the video he posted? Building something to account for 99.998% of scenarios is 'laziness'? On the second point He himself disqualifies _every_ two wheel drive car from being able to pass his so called 'test'. So again - never buy one? I suggest you lobby safety ratings agencies, car magazines, and various autoblog/vlogs and hell even YT car flippers worldwide to include this 'test' as they're all so badly mislead sans this 'test' The more I think about the logical application of this principle to just about anything made, the more clear it becomes how absolutely absurd this is lol.

The lock function locks the center differential. It cant send power to either rear wheel.

@@davidharrison5246 it is a crossover with AWD, the diagonal test is not only for off road, in case you have snow and 1 or 2 tires do not have traction means you are stuck.Essentially you are paying for an AWD that does not work. I thought that was pretty obvious.
