Thank you. I don’t “off road” a lot in mine but I do go to a local lake/reservoir and have never had a problem but was really grateful to get the education from this video in regards to manipulating the rev limiter to prevent the clutch from engaging and stopping the tires. Much appreciated!!

My thoughts too conscidering tyre upgrade for these kind of conditions in my Kona. I hate the sound of the clutch slipping

Yes, Dual Clutch transmissions are designed for road use. They are fine on snowy roads too. I drove my Tucson with the same engine/ transmission as the Kona in one foot of snow on paved roads last winter several times. I was running 16" Blizzak WS80 winter tires. No issues with overheating the clutches.

bobdadruma Looking forward to winter here. The Right tires for the application make all the diff in the world. Of note, the AWD system loves flying down gravel roads. It's more rally car than Jeep and if 4 wheeling is your metric for success, Jeep Renegade takes the cake in the $30K range... it's just slower ripping through the city and fugly like they were aiming for it.

Who else was cringing seeing this? If you want to do this with a Kona get the 2.0 litre with the regular torque converter 6sp automatic, not the DCT!

To drive on sandy terrain first you must lower the tyre pressure to 15 PSI, then you just have to put it into secuential mode and engage 1st or 2nd gear, and keep pace.

It's a test, it showed us the personally of this DCT in sand. I just came from the small Jeep vid, now I think the Kona did good for not being the more advanced AWD of the KIA Dynamax AWD system. The small jeep did not have a lot of power to the rear wheels.PLEASE do the same test with a Hyundai/Kia Dynamax system.

You do realize that if you go over 25km....or is it 25mph the awd lock disengages. That means if your tires are spinning that fast it won't work. Its ment for low gear. Manual setting to first and don't pin it. It will crawl through that sand just fine.

I doubt that, as I enabled 4wd lock at 60kmph in my Kona yesterday.

The Kona actually has a pretty sexy shape. It looks muscular and the blue with the black top like really good. Am just waiting for someone to lower it, put deep dish wheels on it and swap the Kia Stinger engine in it. Would make a cool street machine wilh AWD.

Ste-Thérèse-de-Lisieux ???? J'allais glissé là quand j'étais petit !!! Quand même surprennant d'être capable de monter cette pente de sable avec cette voiture , si ces bien celle que je crois être ... vous devriez indiquer le degré d'inclinaison de la pente pour que les gens comprennent bien le degré de difficulté . Belle demo et je trouve que le Kona sen sort très bien . Merci

Who has some real world dirt experience to share? I'm another (new) owner here, and one of the reasons to buy a Kona was to have confidence I won't get stuck on steep dirt roads that have ruts. In a 2wd car it's a concern, but my technique is the past has been to keep the power on and rely on traction control to drive the spinning wheel which seems to work, but that car has a torque converter. I'd like to know what to do in the Kona so I can get out without stressing the clutches!!! The idea that the rev limiter causes the clutches to disengage seems like a sure fire recipe to get bogged doesn't it?

Oh god who told you to drive in sand like that. Having driven my Tucson with the same 7dct in sand for a full day I know it can handle it no problems. I didnt abuse it like that though. Sand driving isnt just mashing the gas pedal and banging the rev limiter.

My Kona is not a serious off roader at all. But I knew this from day one & don't intend to ever take it rally crossing & abusing it. It cost way too much for that. (1.6 T high end).

Why would you even try that with a dual-clutch transmission try the test with a regular SEL torque converter

DCTs aren't really designed for off-road duty. The AWD system is intended for better traction in snow, rain etc, not for off-road adventures. 6.7 inches of ground clearance as well. I would never try anything like this in most of the sub-compact SUVs this competes with. The Subaru would do ok but none of the rest. Heck only a few even offer AWD. These are city/urban runabouts not off road climbers.

Took my Subaru Forester 2015 to a nice sandy off-road trail right along the beach. There were nice turns and banks. I was surprised how it was handling, suspension is a little soft but other than that traction was no issue. You can get a lot of speed and whip around the turns, a lot of fun.

I have a feeling people buying will most likely opt for the front wheel drive since it seems the 4WD looks to not be working the right way.

So the clutch was disengaging at redline? I feel like I need to read the manual to understand how this is supposed to work. Is it supposed to be a center locking differential or does it just lock front and rear independently? It looks to me like the latter.

No way the front and rear diffs lock independently. I bet it has an AWD system such as Haldex.

I bought a subaru xv 2018 premium just wanted to k ow is it good for sand As i live in the middle east wev got some crazy dunes. Soon will get method rims and bf. But over all becoz of the power and cvt and all is it any good for sand driving and dunes.. cheers.. any replies appriciated cheers

Mohammed Khan as long as you keep it at high revs you should be fine. I am in the states and we have extremely bad Winters and I have to keep the high revs to get out of the deep snow. Also make sure traction is off when you hit the sand

I haven't. We had a two foot snow fall one day and it handled an hour drive and it never went below 4000 rpms for almost the entire trip. I don't recommend doing that but had to to survive.

On particularly difficult obstacles the CVT fluid temperature may get exceedingly hot. You may want to consider getting an auxilary transmission cooler if you intend to drive the vehicle hard quite often. I tested a 2018 Subaru Forester 2.5 with CVT, and the transmission fluid temperature got as hot as 245 degrees Fahrenheit on a particularly difficult obstacle.

"only 30 km on the odometer...". Thanks for this test, as I'm looking at this exact car for driving in sand. That being said, NO serious ORV driver goes on sand with those tires and expects to make it. You MUST air down- and with appropriate tires.

That transmission is not to last not even 5k if you keep torture it like that. Is going to be fried soon. A manual will do better

It is a manual for the most part. Hearing the engine rev means nothing to the transmission lasting ,as long as it is not in slip mode like when you are in slow start stop start in heavy traffic, it is a manual trans gearbox and a gear is positivity engaged.

This was perfectly fine, I would say that it was even kind of overprotective. You can't burn transmission on this modern car even if you want. HYUNDAI electronics will disconnect it even before it gets hot and this sometime may let you down in a hard situation.

@@CarQuestion Both the DCT and R18/19 tires are designed for street use, not off-roading. The 6-speed auto with smaller rims would do much better, and it costs less too, genius.

This is not suitable for terrain, so dont test it in terrain. Test it on a frozen street in the city that is the point of this car. Otherwise get a Landrover!
