In this video, I will show you how to replace the rear liftgate struts on a Honda Odyssey. The part may need replacing if you notice the struts is not able to hold the hatch up and it falls down. The fix is to replace both struts (do not replace only one). Make sure you have something to hold the liftgate up while doing the replacement. Watch the entire video for all the steps. Excellent video. Bought the same parts as in the video - work like a chaem. One tip - take both of the old struts off first as you will need to lift the deck lid up another half inch or so to install the new struts.

Thank you for the video If you follow this it will work well Warning if you do not release all the tension by propping door all the way up. A good working shock could spring open and brake your glass. It happened to me unfortunately. Maybe I can save someone 374.00 for new window. Thanks again for sharing.

Really well done video, best one I've seen. I'm about to try installing these Maxpow struts in my 2007 Odyssey. Dealer quoted me $241 for parts and install, $150 for parts alone, and they said I need 2 people. The way I see it, you need 1 person and a ladder. I just paid $25 for the struts on Amazon.

Spoke too soon. One original strut was removed easily. The other took longer. Got clips loosened but still couldn't remove. Clips actually came all the way off. When I tried later the top came loose and I was able to remove. Got new struts connected at the top easy. But lower holes do not align. Seems like strut is too long by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch? I have lifted the liftgate up all the way. I am using a ladder, but still can lift it up a little bit more. Doesn't help. This Maxpow part says it should work for 2005-2010 Odyssey Non Power. Both ends of the strut are rotated/screwed as far as they will go. Even with them being connected at the top to the van, they seem to have a little bit of wobble. But that's with the lower end not being connected. Is the strut compressed all the way? If it could be compressed a little more it would fit. I wasn't able to make it any shorter. So at this point I have both new struts on, connected at the tops only, and can't shut my liftgate all the way. Going to have to take it to a shop, so I guess I won't be saving a lot of money after all.

Hi. I ended up having to return the Maxpow struts to Amazon, and purchased a set from Honda. ($151). I tried again to install. this time they fit length-wise, but I wasn't able to rotate the bottom pieces to get them to line up. So I had to take to Honda. They installed, but wouldn't share with me how they did it. I can only assume they used a wrench. They were kind enough to not charge me for the labor since I got the parts at their shop. The ends of the Maxpow struts did rotate, or screw on/off. But I wasn't able to find out if they could have worked, since they also seemed to be too long. And maybe the ends of the Honda struts also rotated, but I couldn't budge them. So far, the Honda struts are working fine. Disappointing, because I really wanted that satisfaction of paying only $25 for the job. I hope that future instructions for these struts includes some clarification on the issue.

I’m going to a junk yard to get a bumper cover and was wondering how hard it would be to remove the tailgate at a junk yard and put it on my Odyssey. My bumper is cracked but there is only a small crease in the bottom of lift gate and there is no problem opening and closing it.

Amazon just delivered my Max Pow struts, & the directions are much more complicated then they need to be. My only comment is it wouldn't be a bad idea to wipe the ball (ball & socket) where the new struts press into as the existing lube looked nasty and could cause premature where or squeeking. The new struts are prelubed.

Good video. Only critique, use something really solid to hold the door up. One of the struts is still good and holding up a lot of the weight -just not enough to keep the whole door up. You have no idea usually which strut is bad. If you happen to take off the good strut then the door becomes super heavy. It could easily crush a flimsy box -and you. I used a six foot ladder and it was almost tall enough. I had to put a little shim under it. Also best to have someone to keep the ladder vertical.

when you remove both of the old struts, only replace the bad one unless both are bad. to test for the bad one after remove them, if you can push it in it's bad if you can't that strut is still good. some car lift gate is firm to close down when both struts are new so if you only have to replace one you can save the other one for next time.

Always replace both because the tension between old and new will be different. You don't want to have uneven tension between left and right side. Also the struts are inexpensive.
