Thank you, I almost broke my hand doing this the wrong way - the whole thing with the clip made all the difference. My replacements came with the brackets so when I took off the old one (OEM with no clips) I removed them by removing the brackets. When I tried to put the first new strut in, I bolted the bracket (with the strut attached) to the liftgate and then tried to attach the bracketto the body (with the strut still attached to that bracket too) and tried to compress the lift with by easing down the gate, and then the body end of it slipped and went up and trapped my hand! The more the gate came down the more it was crshing my hand, so I summoned up all my strength to push up and get my hand out! Then I took a break and decided to check KZbin and found your video (after a couple others) and you did a great job explaining about the clip and when I went back and attached the bracket FIRST and then pulled back the clip and clipped in in AFTERWARDS it all went so quickly and easily !!!! so THANK YOU!!!

Thank you so very much. After watching your, easy to follow, instructions I finally bit the bullet and ordered new gas lifter struts for my 2003 Elantra Hatch Back. Today, (with your video running on my phone for reference), I installed them myself, with a little bit of help from hubby, (he held the torch so I could see better and he rigged up a timber support to hold up the heavy tailgate), and I am stoked! No more tailgate coming down on the back of my head when I put my bowling gear in the boot!!! I could have saved myself a bit of stress if I had read the comments below, about not moving the pinch clips on the new struts, but then I might not have had the strength in my (71 year old fingers) to push the fittings onto the ball joint. I feel a great sense of accomplishment tonight, so a huge thank you.

Watched your video last week and felt sure I could do this after your very clear and thorough lesson. I wish you were my neighbor so I could learn from your life experiences. Ordered the struts for my 1984 Bronco II... they arrived yesterday and today I put them on. Thought maybe I had the wrong ones as they appeared a bit too long. But since I had matched part numbers, it should have fit. Took me a minute to figure out that just because I had a ladder that could support the fully open hatch...it still had a couple of inches available in lift when I got under it and pushed hard. And ...voila!!...perfect fit. A couple of open/close cycles and it all came back to me how the hatch is supposed to move and really appreciate how the struts hold that heavy load. Thanks Dirt Farmer Jay from Farmer J in NM.

Excellent instructions and demonstration, Jay. Lift Support Depot did provide me the correct supports for my KIA Rio5, for which I am very grateful, as the KIA dealer wanted $225/pair (what else is new) for what L.S.D. charged me only $58/pair. But I found their instruction page a little confusing. Your video clarified everything. Thanks a lot. --Mike Pereira

Mike, we're glad to hear that our video was of help to you and that Lift Support Depot had what you need. Thanks for the insight on the instructions not being as clear as it could have been. I'm in contact with them about a possible collaboration and I'll mention your comment. Best Regards, DFJ

Great video and tip sheet! Got the parts and it took me longer to move the other cars out of the driveway than it it replacing both struts on my tailgate of my daughters 2008 Honda Odyssey. Thanks again.

Hello DirtFarmerJay, thanks for putting up this video. I bought gas struts for my ford and when I tried to push them together manually and they didn't budge, I thought they were defective. Your video was very helpful, keep up the great work. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain how the gas struts actually work. I looked at a few youtube videos but none explained how the gas struts engage with the boot of the car.

Great video! Is there a way to adjust the height of the tail gate or strut on a 2015 Toyota Prius or buy a different strut & what size do I buy. Even on my tip toes I can barely reach it.

I watched your video just to understand how to remove the strut clips. Just what I needed for my tailgate dropper strut. Thanks

I bought my struts for 10 bucks a pop from stabilus and had somewhat of an idea on how to do it but I decided to watch this video to make sure I was doing it right lol. Saved so much money doing it myself. Also I didn't have any grease on hand but I did have brake system silicone compound instead and I know that stuff holds up well from the times I've used it.

Very helpful video DirtFarmer Jay-thanks for taking your time to help out so many of us. My application was for an 08 Honda Ridgeline hood struts- from FIGS Engineering, which came with no instructions. I did not understand the basics of prepping the clips to accept the ball socket- until watching your vid, thank you again sir.

Thanks for the video! Once I saw how easy it was, it did it myself. I could not find the lift supports at any local parts store and didn't even come up on a Honda Factory Parts site. LS Depot sent them in 4 days.

Wow, what fantastic tutorial. The camera shots are excellent, it is wonderful to be able to see exactly what you are doing all the way through to the end. Have saved this to my computer. I was hesitant to buy this little hatchback because the struts don't work, but now will confidently put another bid on it. Thanks a million!

You da man! Thank-you so much for your excellent suggestion on using a ladder to prop-up the tailgate. I successfully replace struts on two RX300s using my 6' ladder and a couple of 2 by 4s.. My friend unfortunately got one strut installed and while installing the second, the tailgate came crashing down, shattering her back window. She didn't have a ladder and instead used a long, unstable 2 by 4.

Glad it helped, Alan. Once you know how, this is a simple repair that is, in my opinion, commonly overcharged for. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's "headache" and broken window. Talk about something simple turning into a complexity. UGGGH. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ

When you put them on you just push them on you do not need to touch the clips before hand, the only time you touch the clips is when you are getting them off.

Thank you! I wish i would have read your comment before diving into this today. I snapped off one of the clips. I slid it on the joint anyway. Next time I will know. Thank you again for the advice.
@williamthomas81353 жыл бұрын
You will need a small screwdriver to loosen the old clips, grease the balls, loosen the new clips on new struts, snap ball joint on balls, push the clips if they need help to snap back in place. My prob is, the new struts are 3 inches "too long" and I Can't compress them by hand. I thought they were the Rokcauto listed part.
@pay90112 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The pdf states the same point. You don't need to prep them, just snap them on. He didn't follow the instructions.
