The lenses you should get to start off are as follows: 35mm 50mm 85mm The 85mm is perfect for portraiture, but on a crop sensor camera the 50mm turns to an 85 (just about) so I guess you can use that. Forget about getting your "zoom" lenses first. Get good glass first and learn how to frame your photos first.

sell your 3 zooms because they all cover the same range, pick up a sigma 17-55 2.8 o.s. and then grab a nikon 55-200. fewer lenses. same focal range. and the 17-55 is sharper and constant aperture.

Great video. Common misconception with lenses as a beginner or amateur is that filters always help. This is not the case. The filters that I see in this video don't even look like they are multicoated, and if you're using a cheap lens with a cheap filter on top it could actually detract from the quality of your photos. A much better way to protect your lens without sacrificing image quality is something you already have - lens hoods. And unless you can't spare the space in your gear bag, I would highly recommend keeping the hoods on at ALL times. Even at night. It won't take away from your image, and it will always help to protect against bumps and other accidents as well as doing its primary job of getting rid of unwanted light flares and other effects in your shots.

Depending if you want the close up shot or an entire view of the landscape. Probably the 55-200mm if those are your only choices. Both those lens are quite slow and don't do all that well in low light. Really, you should use a tripod with those lens.

The 35 mm 1.8 the 1.8 is the f-stop or aperture they mean the same thing lets say nikon made a 35 mm 1.2 (they don't toy knowledge ) the 1.2 would let in even more light. The lower the f-stop the more light it lets in. If a lens is at F 22 that pic will be really dark

I own Nikon D3100. My gear is same as yours. The only exception is I did not acquire Nikon 18-110, Instead I bought one Tamron 17-50 F2.8. I think it is a worthy upgrade from my kit lens although much weightier.. Pictures shot by me by this lens are sharp across focal lengths with good colour depth/saturation, and the added advantage is constant 2.8 aperture which is great for night shots. It has no VR, but in daylight shooting conditions, you can easily avoid blurriness as the shutter speed is above 1/30 which I can manage.The Sigma 18-200, the same as your own, is a good walk around all purpose lens, although it best performs in mid range apertures, from F/8 to F/11. Otherwise pictures would be unacceptably soft. Of course for persons with deeper pockets should go for Nikon 18-300, if they do not like frequent change of lens which is really difficult in certain situations. Nikon prime lens that, i.e., 35 mm 1.8G is a must have one as it is really a fast lens with exceptionally good photographic results combining advantage of light weight. However Nikon would have done better to add VR feature to it which definitely would help its wide aperture advantage in low light shootings.

Hi! Nice Review....let me ask you,,,after you buy the 18-105mm, do you stil use the 18-55mm kit lens? I thinking about getting the 18-105mm and sell my kit lens, because i think there will be no use anymore....and the glass is better than the kit lens? Did you fell any diference in the photos? Comparing the Sigma x Nikkor 18-105, much diference in the shots quality? Sorry for all the questions and tks in advance!

I have a D5300 - I still have the 18-70mm I go with my D70s about 12 years ago. It's a decent piece of glass. I picked up a 55-200 DX zoom used for cheap It's the older VR, not the newer VRII - not the greatest, autofocus is a bit slow, but does it the job, most of the time. I also have the 35 f1.8G - decent lens, does available light well. The last lens I got was a 10-20mm AF-P zoom. Everything is BUDGET that I bought new on sale or used. I'm thinking about getting the 70-300mm AFS FX zoom to replace the 55-200. There were 4 used listed locally the last time I checked. I am on a fixed retirement income and what I have just fits what I can afford. The 18-70mm is also fits my calibrated Infrared converted D80 that I picked used about 6 years ago.

Every lens mentioned have its own pros and cons. It may be picture quality, or weight of the lens, or speed of focus, or how much zoom you need. All these factors are dependent on the user's needs. It's like asking people what is the one best car to buy.

There isn't one. the 18-105 is actually better. Not by a huge amount at all but at worst as good. The 18-55 is an old design and they fianlly came out wioth a new 18-55 recently that might be OK.

You mentioned that Nikon has two 18-200mm lenses, the VR and “the other is a VRII … which has a better vibration reduction”. This is not the case as the II simply means that the lens is the second version. Both lenses use the same vibration reduction and optics. The II lens adds a lock switch and has a different lens coating than the first version lens. I would also like to mention that Sigma’s zoom and focus is like that of Canon which is backwards to Nikon. This may be no big deal but people should be aware of it as it may take some getting used to. Tamron lenses zoom and focus like Nikon. Also, there are a couple of well known online players in used equipment that I think people should consider. Their equipment is graded so you have an idea of what you are buying and returns are accepted. I like this idea better than ebay although I do own a like-new lens I got off of ebay for a great price. I also purchased a factory refurbished Nikon 18-105mm lens (with Nikon warranty) for $200 that is indistinguishable from new.

I'd want to buy the D5200 with instead of the 18-55 lens, the 35/f1.8 not-zoom lens, because several people, like Ken Rockwell and Dpreview, say then you get the best quality photos, you get the most out of the 24 mps. Besides, it;s a wider lens, more light can come throught, so with little light you'll get better pictures. What do you think of that?
@michaeltbui
@michaeltbui 10 жыл бұрын
I'd say if you could/want, you should really get the zoom, because it performs really well for what it costs, and with the 35mm you should be able to get more detail than with the 18-55, but it's still decent for the cost. It is closer to a 'standard' lens which has the field of view of about 50mm which is closer to your normal field of view. Yes it's also a 'fast' lens which lets more light in, but that doesn't directly mean you'll get better photos.

The only thing is how expensive a hobby it becomes lol, I sold the kit lens and purchased the Nikon 16-85mm for my general "go to" lens and find it superb the extra 2mm coverage is bigger than I expected. I also own a 35mm 1.8 for general house parties etc, 50mm 1.8 for portraits and I have just bought the Nikon 70-300mm but have not really had a chance to use it yet. I own two Yongnuo YN-468II Speedlights for my Nikon cameras and would defiantly recommend them. The 468II can be used in I-TTL with Nikon or operate in full manual, multi, or as an optical slave. Adjustments in any mode can be made in 1/3 or ½ stops from full to 128th power. The flash zoom can be set in auto or manual. The 468II will swivel/bounce, has a metal hot shoe, PC socket, built in bounce card & diffuser and uses an LCD screen. I bought mine on Amazon for under $100 each while a comparable Nikon Speedlight is over 3 times the price. BTW I just ordered a Canon version today for a friend for $87.

It is, the short focal length isn't that interesting for bokeh either, you need to be very close to get an out of focus background and pretty much can forget throwing the foreground out. It how ever is a nice wide and cheap lens that will give you that extra bit of light the kit lens will not get you. If you want to play around with shallow dof, still have sharp images and don't want to spend about as much on a lens as you did your camera get the 50mm 1.8.

@ChillWithMe_musics
@ChillWithMe_musics 8 жыл бұрын
They are called UV filters, and their only use is to protect the front glass from scratches. If you use your DSLR for family shoots, etc, there is not much reason to buy it. (By the way, tiny scratches have zero affect on the image quality) Professionals mainly use UV filters to maintain the resale value of the 2-3000$ lenses, but that's it. So it's really up to you, it's not a big deal if you don't have it, glass is a though material.

Wrong information about Nikon 18-200mm lenses. The older and the newer versions of this lens are almost identical. They both use the same 2nd generation Vibration Reduction system and are optically identical. The only differences : the newer one has a zoom lock button and the letters "VR" are in gold color instead of red.

Nikon 18-200mm is your best bet, crazy sharp, you can find the older version which is basically the same as the new one for 400$ all day long on ebay, just make sure you get the Nikon brand lens, the third party versions are crap.

i would like to make a wise purchase for my next camera and the wife wants an SLR. Our current point and shoot is a canon powershot a590 (which serves most of my needs well). However we now have two girls, one currently in ballet. She would like to upgrade our camera for DIY home pictures/portraits. I personally love taking pics when i go to the mountains and sporting events. I bought a 5200 with the nikon 15-55 and 55-200 lens, but i'm seeing a ton of other options and after seeing your video i'm wondering if i should consider a different option for my lens. We aren't pro shooters and never will be, but we do like photos. Any thoughts?

I think you should first get use to what you have. Then you will quickly realize the limits of what your current lens can and cannot do (depending on the type of pictures you take). After this, you will know what type of lens you need. Ex: is weight important to you, or if you need the wide angle which your 55-200 can't cover, etc. I still love my 18-105mm as far as versatility. If I need the extra reach, then grab the lens that goes to 200 or 300mm

which is better having one 18-200 lens or having two lenses 18-55 & 55-200
@dial2fast

+Ihab Ahmed It really comes down to weight. The 18-200 lens is heavier to use if you have it on your neck all day. Where as the other 2 lens require you to swap as you need.

TY for the review and the photos that showed what an 35mm lens can do. I'm coming back into photography from the film world. At that time I used a moderately fast film, an F/22, and 50mm for wide angle and deep focus. I know what to do with this camera that way. The links helped. Many thanks.
