I'm so glad you showed how to make the bottom curve match the curve of the roofline. It seems to be the norm for tint shops to make the outer edges sloping downward which looks terrible in my opinion. Installers who do that may be good installers but they don't have an eye for aesthetics.

Silly question probably, when you first lay the tint down on the outside of the window, what side of the tint should you have facing up? The actual tint itself or the piece you peel off and throw away? I know what side you need to stick to the glass once you're done, just not sure about when youre doing the prep and cutting.
@dial2fast Жыл бұрын
The way you lay the tint down during prep is the same as when it's installed. So during the outside cutting, the adhesive is facing up.

Awesome, make simple diy! I would venture the following which may be very helpful. Caution, keep areas wet at all times. Ensure the film’s appropriate side is used, as the tear off/ throw away section must always be at the top when making/cutting out template outside of your vehicle. Before the instal inside, ensure again that it contours to your windshield outside with the discard side at the top before attempting the inside.

You can't remove them. Most tint shops will sand it down a bit so the tint will adhere better.

My car failed an inspection because it goes below the AS-1 line. I didn't install the tint, the previous owner did. Would it be a bad idea to try to trim it down? Or should I just take it all off? I was tempted to try and trim it first, but worry about scratching the glass.

Don't bother trimming it. You will end up scratching the windshield and old glue will be stuck on. It's a mess. Take it to a tint shop and have them remove it and reinstall a new one.

You can skip the second cut if you want but if you are new to doing it, it's easier to manage the tint when it's trimmed to a smaller piece.

Arent you scratching the glass making the cut over the black section?
@dial2fast11 ай бұрын
When it comes to not scratching the glass, it's recommended you use a new blade that is stainless steel or carbon steel with smooth and polished edge. These blades have a reduced risk of scratching the glass surface during cutting. Also you should hold the knife at 45 degrees or less when cutting.

it's fine. the dot matrix is an inexpensive way for the manufacturer to apply a sun "blocker" and meet code as the dots are easily seen through. Good tint along with good squeegee-ing will remove both water and air and the tint will conform to the dot matrix no problem. Make sure the surface is (very) clean.

The sides are curved downwards to cover-up the sun better at angles dude As in, the central portion is not kept longer so as to provide better visiblity of far away traffic
@dial2fast4 жыл бұрын
It's ok if that's the style you like. But the fact is you get that downward curve because the bottom edge is straight (installers don't need to cut the bottom edge). It makes for a very quick & easy money install. One more thing, if the side is not to go past the AS1 line which is about 7" (to keep it legal), the middle part might be 5". Does that mean you don't need as much shade when the sun is shining in the middle? I am just sharing how I do it. Others can install it however they like.
