Good video. Very informative. I'm in the process of trying to install an AFR gauge and they recommend using a relay but still need to find a "clean" 12v source. I was recommended one of the wires on the plug for the coil and I want to test it for "keyed on" only voltage. Thanks!

@dial2fast
@dial2fast 3 жыл бұрын
A basic voltage drop test is a comparison voltage measurement between the source and the load. So measurement the voltage at the car battery (or voltage source), and then measure the voltage at the load (ex: stereo amplifier), and the difference is the drop in voltage.

Nice vid thanks. i need to check voltage for a head light, so does negative attach to battery and then the positive probe to the headlight loom? will there be a reading? should the car be on?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 жыл бұрын
Yes you can put the negative lead onto the negative of the battery post, then probe your positive test lead to which ever wire you are testing. Turn on your headlight like you normally would with your vehicle, then test it. Headlight shouldn't require the ignition to be one unless your car has automatic headlight feature.

Great video, so if I need to find positive wire in bulk of cables inside doors, I can test Red wire from multimeter and black cable connect to any metal part of the car right? And that should give me correct measurement.
@dial2fast

Yes, that is correct.

@dial2fast
@dial2fast 8 жыл бұрын
+robbierohn123 Yes you can use this method to test voltage as long as you know which wire you are probing and what voltage you are expecting to see.

I'm curious in your first video why you didn't use the battery setting on the harbor freight multimeter? Great vid. Very informative.
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 жыл бұрын
Yes, that HF multimeter has a function to test the 'health' of a battery, but in the first video, I was simply showing how to measure the DC voltage of a battery (not the health of it).
@Lanninglongarmmowing
@Lanninglongarmmowing 9 жыл бұрын
Aren't health and voltage the same thing?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 жыл бұрын
Love2boat92 Voltage is an absolute number, and health is a relative measurement as in a battery tester testing a battery giving you a red, yellow, green range. or good / bad, or pass / fail. These relative measurements is translated from the absolute voltage reading, but a battery tester will do this translation for you. The operator does not need to know whether 12.1V on a car battery is almost 50% discharged, and 12.6V is good. If you happen to know these voltage reading and what to look for, then you can use the volt reading to check a battery.

Hi can you help? I have a problem, my new Philips 12V HB4 bulb explode in my cars headlamp. Now someone told me its due to over-voltage of circuit? Is that possible to be an over-voltage problem or a faulty bulb?

because any chassis ground you connect your black probe to will allow you to complete the circuit as if you were using the neg battery terminal

As usual a very informative video. When piercing a wire, instead of using tape, you can use liquid tape or nail polish which would give a better seal.

My battery was moved to the trunk, but I want to test power in the engine bay and cab but obviously, cannot reach the battery. If I wanted to test the engine block or starter for quality of my chassis ground, where do I connect my positive too?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 9 ай бұрын
You can run a long wire from the car battery positive terminal to the front where you have the multimeter. Just use a thick enough wire like 14 or 16 gauge.

Ok let me ask a dumb question do it matter what hole the red or black wire goes in on the multimeter?
@dial2fast
@dial2fast 3 жыл бұрын
The black probe goes into the COM hole and red probe goes into V. This way when you measure the voltage on a wire, you can see which wire is positive and such one is negative by looking at the reading on the LCD and seeing if it's positive or negative reading.

nice video, it's just a shame you use a fluke, as someone who spent most of my life in electronics, fluke is ridiculously overpriced, a total rip off company, I don't recommend fluke and I will never buy a fluke, it is bs to believe that their meters are 10 times more money than other meters that either do the same thing or more, and they have been ripping people off for years. it's a disgrace. good quality is one thing, scamming the public is another.
