Thank you. Finally, a Nissan valve cover video that explains why not to just replace the tube seals. You have satisfied mental debate.
@Z33Garage6 жыл бұрын
You can take these out with a hole saw. Ive done this fix on several cars already. If the seals leak from the outside, so if you take the seal out, ads RTV in the hole, put the seal back in and seal the seal with rtv again, wait 24 hours it will stop leaking. RND has a terrible track record of not replying to people, and since my seals werent physically broken I sealed mine back up. They currently have 70k on the resealed seals and no leaks.
@faye97567 жыл бұрын
OK, I finally finished this job. It CAN be done. You use a 2" hole saw. I made a mandrill out of a piece of 2x4 to guide the hole saw inner drill to center the 2" cut on the seal center. It was a 2 step mandrill, but some people use a broom stick handle that fits snug into the seal ID (it's 1" ID). I ended up putting the FelPro seals in UPSIDE DOWN ON PURPOSE. I used Permatex Ultra Black (black is used on rubber). First I cut out the inner ring and cleaned up the hole really good with BrakeKleen. Then I used steel wool to rough-up the mating surfaces. Then I used the RTV to glue the seal into the valve cover. I positioned the seal so inner cone faces out and the lip of the seal faces into the valve cover (it's got that spring around it to tighten it against the tube). It has to go in backwards b/c the seal lip won't go over the tube if you put it in the right way. But when you put it in backwards, the seal lip goes down the tube about 1/4", just like it's supposed to. To install the valve covers on the car, I used a jeweler's flat blade screw driver. But first I applied silicone grease to the seal lip area. Then starting with the rear tube, I gently moved the screw driver blade around the tube, between the tube and seal lip, until the whole lip gripped around the tube. Then I moved to the middle tube and did the same. All the while I put light downward pressure on the valve cover at end of the first seal I installed to keep it from popping off. After slipping the middle seal on the middle tube, I did the seal closest to me. It took about 3 minutes to get the valve cover to slip over the tubes. Worked great! Plus, the seal is facing the traditionally correct direction: Lip faces oil source. Only time will tell how long this seal lasts. But I can guarantee it's better than the garbage seals that come from Chinese rubber. I'd post pics of this job if I could. It was done on a 2004 Infinity G35.

There is a trick to this. From the top side of the cover, poke a flat head through the hole where it grabs on the inside of the gasket. Then lightly tap with a hammer till the plastic holding in the grommet budge's a little. Repeat on middle hole and other end until the plastic housing for the seals comes loose. It does snap back on! The seals fall out, put the new ones it its place and snap back on the plastic housing on the inside of the cover.. boom done

You’re not thinking outside the box. Take out the old tube seals just like you showed and while they are out, take a dremmel with a small grinding stone and enlarge the holes in the plastic baffle to allow the new seals to go in. It won’t harm a thing and new seals are important to keep oil out of the spark plug tubes.

I actually have a V6 '03 Altima. I was just trying to gauge the difficulty of this process. It seems the shop owner that told me about this problem was quite skeptical to do this procedure to his own vehicle. I wanted to see what the big deal was since the labor alone was something in the $400 range. For a mechanically inclined person who has dealt with a torque wrench (bled brake lines, changed 2 calipers and did all 4 brakes and rotors while I was down there). Would you recommend me not perform this procedure? Also, I noticed that it was a 6 cylinder engine in the video, but the cover you replaced had only 3 sparkplug cut-outs which means there must be 2 covers. The rear cover looks a bit tougher, did you also do that one or only the front?
@dial2fast9 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Wolff I showed the video of replacing the rear one, but later did also replace the front one when I found it to be leaking. Your 03 Altima has the same V6 engine. The benefit of your vehicle is your rear cover is not buried under the window cowl like my Quest. But all the goodies you need to remove on the engine is the same. I am guessing you found my series of 5 videos on changing the valve cover and spark plugs. Those videos will give you an idea of what's involved. It's up to you to determine your competency on doing this job as I don't know your skill or tools you have available.

Most tube seals you CAN replace. Theres a special tool thats like a small pry bar with a hook at the end and you can basically puncture the rubber and pull the spring out and then you can remove the tube seal. The new ones you just take a rubber mallet and lightly tap them into place evenly till theyre flush with the valve cover where they sat before. Done them before. Most manufacturers will tell you that you cant replace them so they can charge people more for parts for a new valve cover. Also some techs are lazy and dont want to spend the time removing the tube seals and putting new ones in when they can just get new ones with a new valve cover and gasket.

@guitarchords-n-more43385 жыл бұрын
start by checking your spark plugs one by one... see if any are worn...this code means that multiple cylinders are misfiring, at least 2,... if you see the spark plugs are worn, go ahead and change them...and inspect your ignition coils as well as these can cause it if they are worn,... another thing that can cause this code is a vacuum leak... check your rubber hoses for cracks to see if they are sucking air,... also check around your intake manifold, as it is more than likely plastic, and the gaskets could need changing,... you can use some carburetor cleaner to spray around the intake manifold... with the engine idling do this,... if it changes it's idle while you are doing this, that means your gaskets need changing,... also you can check your fuel pressure,...it could be low, and need a new gasket,... also it could be a bad battery too... I hope this helps

will the nissan quest valve cover your using fit the 02 nissan maxima sense they have the same engine.

The dealer I go to tell me there are different part number for different year/model of the 3.5. So best to check with the parts department at your local dealer. They will give you the info even if you don't buy from them.

I recently purchased new valve covers for my 350Z from Auto Parts Zone 2008 out of New Jersey on eBay after 100 miles the spark plug tubes were leaking in all six on both sides these valve covers are crap do not order them do not buy them go OEM buy from Nissan unless you want to pay the labor twice unless you're doing it yourself and you just like to work on your car

You literally just showed how to service the tube seal. They sell replacement seal at your neares part store. The new seals + some rtv and your good.

its NOT an O-Ring, its a seal.....single lip seal. I hope nobody tries to order it as an O-ring they will have no luck. An O-ring seal looks nothing like this seal.

In the video were you show how to replace valve cover you mention using RTV in two corners. If there is a gasket, why is it that you also need the RTV? Thanks in advance.
@dial2fast9 жыл бұрын
+Nathaniel Ramos Because the corner may not seal properly over time, so you need to add sealant. This is done by the manufacturer and dealer when they do this.

What's the point of the silicone in the corners of the valve cover where the cam lobes are?? thats what the new gasket is for to seal all around?
@dial2fast6 жыл бұрын
That's a 90 degree turn and can be an area where oil might leak. The method shown is what's done by the manufacturer and also at the Nissan dealer.
@pono3216 жыл бұрын
dial2fast Thank you! For the quick reply, As for me unfortunately I have to take off the valve cover again then:(

I just screwed up the valve cover trying to service the tube seals. It seemed like the under part of the valve cover snapped apart . Needless to say it didn't
@joshuarivera76304 жыл бұрын
Get a proper size hole saw and cut those bastards out. You can find spark plug seals separately if you look around, if you really don't want to spend the money on new valve covers, it's worth the effort. I've done it on my maxima and no leaks.
@YoungBlaq11 ай бұрын
Darn. This is why I only buy domestic cars. Working on my mom's nissan and I see A - The spark plugs sit inside the valve cover instead of on top of it. and B - You have to replace the whole valve cover to fix the leak.
