Diamine Inkvent Calendar 2022: Opening, Swatching and Painting with 25 Bottles of Ink!

Today I will be opening this lovely Inkvent advent Calendar by Diamine, which contains twenty five mystery bottles of fountain pen ink, in different colours. There is a variety of standard, shimmer, sheen and chameleon inks, and a couple are even scented (ew, lol!). Along with opening every door, I'll swatch out the inks into my Tomoe River book, and then do a large painting with all of the colours. I hope you enjoy my festive video for 2022; wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. ❤

Mind you, it is summertime here, so it’s more like scorching sunshine.🌞 Things are pretty quiet here; Christmas Day is usually a bit stressful with Nick’s extended family, so I much prefer Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Those chameleon colors are especially cool to look at. You’ve done so many fun ornaments this year! I think my favorite was the donkey as well. It’s so cute and I think it’s actually the same donkey reference I did an artwork of in colored pencils a while back! If so, then maybe it’s the new turtle😂 I would’ve probably done the same thing and made an extravagant background because it’s just too fun

I love the background! It does kinda overshadow the animals a bit, but I love it. Might have needed a white outline on them but that might be just because the squirrel pops the most.

Yeah that's what I was thinking but I decided to leave well enough alone, and just keep the gold outline, heheh. Actually it looks less overpowering now that the whole painting is fully dry. The squirrel definitely stands out the most.

I would agree with you on the background but we don't know the outcome till we try. That's why playing with art supplies is so important. Thanks for sharing with us. These colors were so brilliantly beautiful for sure and quite the challenge to try to use all of them in a single piece of work. You did a great job on that task. I do love the ornaments and the gold outline. I don't know why it never occurred to me that fountain pen ink could be used for painting (as my Derwent inktense palette is currently staring me down). I always wondered what would one do with that much ink beyond my fountain pens? Duh! It just sunk in so thanks for the insight. You're such a joy to watch.

Thank you! I do like how it turned out in the end, it just got a bit insane there for a while haha! When everything dried properly it looks really great. Fountain pen inks are a lot of fun to paint with, pretty much the same as liquid watercolours. I paint with them more than using them in fountain pens, lol!

I meant to buy this calendar but did not get around to doing so till today, unlike last years. The colors are nice. I like the idea of using inks as watercolors and still write with them as well. I love your little pictures and the background us super colorful. The chromo-shading-color separating inks are interesting-similar to colors separating/granulating watercolors.

Hi, Becky! I saved this one and Maggie's to watch today. 😊My favourite is that very-cold-looking squirrel (tail and fur all fluffed up to maintain its body heat). I've enjoyed the whole painting - including the lovely exuberance of the background! - and still marvel at your ability to paint with such confidence and accuracy round a circle! I was trying to guess the scented inks, and got one right and one wrong! I think my favourite ink is the Christmas Day ink with the many different colours that I could see in it - green, pink, various browns and dark reds blue, indigo... Enjoy your New Year Holiday with Nick and co - and try to rest up a bit before then, so that you have the energy to enjoy it. 😊

Christmas has been relaxing so far, but it has gotten really hot; today will be 37C, lol. I don't go to NYE parties - sleeping through it is a much better option! 🤣

@@BeckyTregear I'm in complete agreement about seeing in the new year, though I am usually still awake - fireworks are very noisy here and I'd rather be warm in bed, reading, than wakened with the shock of the noise. By contrast, the sound of the church bells ringing in the New Year is something I miss here in France, where churches usually only have one bell. 37 degrees? Eek! Brings back memories of our mega-hot, months-long drought of a summer this year. I'm much happier in the winter, and this year, I'm managing without the heating, even in December, by bringing into play childhood memories and of strategies for living in a good-sized 3 bedroomed house heated only by a coal fire in the large main room. It was the norm, and it was rare for any of us to be ill. I do miss that coal fire, though! It was lovely to sit and watch it. I've never enjoyed central heating, and am happily surprised at how much fitter I feel without it, even with the outside temperature around the freezing point at night. I'll put it on for an hour if the house temperature falls below 14c and I'm just sitting, but otherwise, two baby hot water bottles and sensible clothes keep me perfectly warm. It's scarily mild last week and this, even up to 17, when the norm is 8c, and we still haven't had any significant rain (sine May!). Oops! I'd better stop here or I'll have gone over the limit per comment! 😊

I’ve just watched the 2024 and 2023 Inkvent. I’m not an artist but it was really interesting to see you paint with fountain pen ink! For writing, my favorites were Memory Lane, Spiced Apple (altho it looks very similar to Cranberry from 2024,) Silent Night is a gorgeous blue/black ink, and I love a great blue/blank ink for general writing…so that’s a winner for me! The Celebration is lovely…not sure how well it would show up writing with a Fine tip fountain pen, might be too pale, but it reminds me of a really good quality blush makeup. Your artwork is lovely, I especially love the squirrel!

Thank you - it was fun painting with the inks, and I think some of them (the lighter colours) work better as "paint" than in fountain pens. I haven't bought the new calendars for a couple of years because the price went up too much, making them insanely expensive, wahhhh!

I had a of fun painting this, even though it got a bit messy, haha. I don't think fountain pen inks are very lightfast in general, but I haven't tested them to know - really they're meant to go in journals, but I do enjoy painting with them nonetheless! 😂 And Merry Christmas. 🎄

As my wife always tells me, artists are always their own worst critic. I hate everything I do, but she loves it. I can't tell you how many paintings and drawings I have thrown away because I think they are garbage. While she'll go behind me and save them. Which I discovered last week when I went into the closet of one of our guest rooms. I discovered a box of a great many art works I tossed in the trash. She saved them from the recycle bin. When I saw them I was like, hmm, not too bad after all. Your work there is neat. Don't be so hard on yourself

Cool! How do you use water with these inks?

They're pretty much the same as liquid watercolours, so I tend to dip a dry brush into the ink bottle, then drop some of the ink onto a palette which can then be mixed with water (I do that so as to avoid contaminating the ink in the bottle as much as possible).

Well I just completely forgot to link that, didn't I! I've fixed that up - link is now in the description. I bought it from cult pens, and of course now it is actually on sale, and way less than what I paid for it, so you might be able to snag a deal on it! In previous years they sold out before Christmas, so I guess they made more this year (or less people bought them, lol).

Oh I totally cheated! 😂 I opened the whole thing at the start of December, and swatched out all the colours. This gave me time to plan a painting so I wouldn't be in a big old panic at Christmas. I then made a separate chart just for myself, and swatched a bottle a day, all the way up to Christmas Day. I got my money's worth out of that calendar! 😂
