The increased tariff (emergency) was said to guarantee a 7 hour supply of power. Presently, the supply is still below that anticipated 7hrs. Consumers pay for ZESCO units for power they can't use, the result? Less consumer spending, and ZESCO wheels back to the position that they need resources to run the entity effectively. Which is not the reason why we were told that we needed an emergency tariff hike in the first place.

The reality is that tariffs in Zambia are ridiculously low compared to other countries in the region. ZESCO makes a loss supplying the Zambian market. Even importing power makes no commercial sense if you make a loss. ZESCO is essentially subsidizing power in Zambia.

Okay, this was embarrassing to watch . Zambian politicians should stop treating citizens like idiots, everyone is fully aware of the announcement that was made when zesco talked about cost reflective tariffs on electricity and the promises that came with that price adjustment upwards. So the minister was not factual or truthful at all.

The issue here is not that the minister didn’t answer the questions rather it’s because the interviewers didn’t like his answers. What they wanted was for him to admit that the govt has failed. Any other response was not going to be accepted. Even if we change govt today we won’t get 24 hour power or K17 fuel. Let’s just accept. It appears that our interviewers don’t research rather they follow sentiments from social media. We have had drought, the kwacha has not been performing well so how can we have cheaper energy?

Anyone care to tell us what his education background is before it’s clearly not economics or energy related … even public speaking.
