Apparently, the biggest problem was the old director, a married couple, wanted the movie to be Rated PG-13/Rated R. With strippers, cursing, etc. The rest of the crew wanted something more kid friendly like the games. Ultimately the old director duo left and a new director took over and made the movie more PG.

Two things I wanna point out: 1) The reason why Bob Hoskins (RIP) hated working on this movie was because he got stapped four times, shocked by electricity and nearly drowned. But the biggest one of all was during the van scene, John Leguizamo accidentily broke his fingers. That why Mario's hand looked strange in some scenes, Hoskins was wearing a cast for the rest of the movie. 2) The opening wasen't narrated by Bob Hoskins, the narrator was actually Dan Castenalla. Yup, Homer Simpson was in this movie!

I have never re-watched it since its original release, but I've never forgotten the dancing goomba elevator scene. I've actually refreshed that memory by playing youtube clips of it for people when they looked at me crazy while trying to describe it. Everything else you showed was like it was new. I didn't remember any of it, so yeah, going to have to agree that it's the best scene in the movie. ^.^

I had an idea for how to do the Goombas right, while also using the design in the movie. Have the Goombas as small creatures, controlling the huge as bodies as suits.
