I met Lana Wood, who played "Plenty O'Toole" a few years back and got her autograph for my Dad as this was one of his favorite Bond movies. (Thunderball being his 1st favorite) She Is a certified scuba diver and told me all about the stunt of going out the window. The diving experience being helpful in the scene later in the movie when she's 'dead' in the pool, she was able to do that scene without a stand in as she could hold her breath for long periods of time.

I wouldn’t necessarily say no connection. They don’t mention the wife or marriage specifically, but Bond was definitely out for blood looking for Blofeld in the opening of the movie. It definitely seems to play more into personal obsession for what happened.

Hey Jen! Some neat factoids: Jill St. John, who played "Tiffany Case," was a B-list actress, mostly known for silly, PG-rated sex comedies and TV. At the time this film was made, she was the "girlfriend"of Henry Kissinger, Nixon's National Security Advisor and Secretary of State. Lana Wood, who played "Plenty O'Toole" and got tossed into the swimming pool by the bad guys, was the younger sister of the far more successful Natalie Wood. "Willard Whyte," played by Jimmy Dean (the sausage guy), was a caricature of Howard Hughes, the insane multi-billionaire who lived in the Desert Inn, one of the many casino-hotels he owned in Las Vegas. ("The Aviator" [2004], starring Leonardo Di Caprio, was a biopic of Hughes.) Your reaction was great as usual, although this is probably the weakest Connery/Bond movie!

😎👍 If it's of interest, that stunt at 12:51 became somewhat iconic after this film came out. The stunt driver, who also specially rigged the mustang's right suspension to be able to perform that trick, did the round of talk shows that year, giving repeat demonstrations of his "sideways driving" technique. The bond girl in the next movie is Jane Seymour. 👩 Paul McCartney's hit theme song is probably the second most iconic in the entire Bond oeuvre after "Goldfinger."

The biggest problem in having Diamonds continue the arc OHMSS started, is that Broccoli had already changed around You Only Live Twice; which was the book sequel to Her Majesty's Secret Service. That began with Bond totally devastated by Tracy's death, thrown back into the field by M too soon by further mischief from Bolfeld and Spectre. Sad; because I think that Lazenby might have had a better chance to prove himself if given a You Only Live Twice script based upon the novel. As an aside: later on I did enjoy George's brief role on General Hospital in the early 80s and his cameo on the TNT movie; Gettysburg, as one of Longstreet's(Tom Berenger)Generals.

If you're confused about Plenty ending up dead and why her corpse is floating in Tiffany's pool, I can explain. In a deleted scene, after she's thrown into the pool, she comes back to the apartment, only to find Bond and Tiffany in bed, and she takes something. While this part of was filmed and has since been released to the public, another scene where Mr. Kidd and Mr. Wint kill her when they mistake her for Tiffany wasn't filmed because it dawned on the film makers that this would create a continuity error.

After the lukewarm response to OHMSS, Producers Broccoli and Saltzman decided they'd do whatever it took to bring back Connery. He got what was the biggest salary at the time for an actor. He got a million dollars (which he ended up donating to charity), a percentage of the profits, and the studio agreed to produce any 2 movies he wanted to make. They also brought back Guy Hamilton, who had directed "Goldfinger" and Shirley Bassey to do the theme song. It did work because the film was a huge hit. Even though Connery has said he did sort of enjoy making the film, you can tell he was older and out of shape and basically doing it for the money. That's why when this was done, Broccoli and Saltzman knew no amount of money would bring Connery back to the series.

Glad to see you've resumed watching these! It's a lot of fun watching you watch them, and you continue to approach them in the right spirit--just have fun and don't take them TOO seriously. A lot of people in retrospect, didn't care for DAF. There were significant plot holes, Connery knew it was his last Bond, so I don't think he put in as much effort as he did in the early Bond movies. After the heaviness of OHMSS, the producers wanted a more light-hearted approach, and returned to the Goldfinger formula. My father's family lives in Vegas, and my grandmother was downtown on Fremont St. when they were filming parts of the car chase scenes. She was in the crowd of people along the sidewalk in some of the scenes by the Golden Nugget or thereabouts. When you see the sign for the Dunes--that casino and sign no longer exist. It was torn down. I think the sign might be in a scrapyard now. The end of the strip you see where they are driving that looks like it's all desert--that is now where some of the biggest and fanciest new casinos that were built in the 90s are now located, like the Excaliber and New York NY. The series was in need of a bit of refresh. Moore brought a different sent of strengths and weaknesses. The style of the series changed quite a bit and a new 1970s tone and style was injected. Moore was actually 6 months older than Connery, but he somehow seems younger. Moore was dapper, suave, but not as physically convincing as a tough guy, like Connery. He brought a more humorous approach. Please continue with Live and Let Die--just be prepared for a rather different approach. You'll see the trademark opening, certain stylistic elements are enduring. This is one where the producers flirted with different genres, in the case of LALD, it is actually considered "Blaxploitation". LALD was also Jane Seymour's debut, and she was stunning. I look forward to watching your reaction to LALD.

I like how this movie leaves up to the viewer if you were a fan of OHMSS then you could say that the pre credit sequence is Bond getting revenge on Blofeld for the murder of Tracy and if you didn't like OHMSS then you could say that it picks up where You Only Live Twice left of since it picks up in Japan

If you observe the waxworks in the PTS it suggests Donald Pleasances Blofeld evolved into Charles Gray. Skipping Telly Savalas completely. It's almost like the Connery movies were their own cannon, and Roger Moore to Brosnan were continuations of Lazenby's Bond.

Despite what some naysayers... well... say, Sir Roger Moore (up next in "Live and Let Die") was a fun and charismatic Bond and did a great job. In real life, Moore was quite a gentleman, never took himself seriously, and was gracious with his fans. He knew the franchise was escapist adventure fair and played the role with a wink and a nod to the audience. He also had the DEFINITIVE epic James Bond movie during his run, "The Spy Who Loved Me." It's the one Bond movie EVERYONE should watch even if they don't see any others because it contains every single Bond element in one big, sprawling, globe trotting, high budget action film. It also introduces one of the most famous villainous henchmen of the franchise, code name Jaws. Moore actually started the franchise when he was older than Sean Connery. Moore also has the distinction of being the FIRST on-screen Bond based on Ian Fleming's novels. He played 007 in a British TV special before they even considered making movies out of the books. When Connery nabbed the role in "Dr. No," Moore got to star in the popular TV show "The Saint," with him basically playing a kind of Bond character.

@@HH-hd7nd I disagree. Moore has has moments where he is as cold-blooded and brutal as any of the others, but he injects a lot more entertainment into the series as well. Being dark and gritty all the time is tedious. IMO Moore has some of the best Bond outings with films like Man with the Golden Gun and Spy who loved me. Moonraker is silly, but it's also tremendously entertaining.

@@nebularain3338 No, Moonraker is not entertaining at all. It is by far the worst Bond movie and the only Bond movie I'd rate as total garbage. Octopussy is also very weak. Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, For Your Eyes Only and A View to a Kill are ok movies and entertaining enough. The Spy Who Loved My is the best movie from the Roger Moore era by far. That doesn't mean that the movies from the Roger Moore era are not entertaining or that I hate these films (with the exception of Moonraker).

The epic scale of the previous films was gone in this one, along with a coherent plot. The producers just seemed to want to rush something out while Connery was willing to show up. He truly was only in this one for the paycheck. When he returned in Never Say Never Again, it was with a different production company and he had more control over what happened. As a result, he was happier and more enthusiastic in his performance. He even looked better physically, even though he was 12 years older.

Actually he had fun doing this one, and the producers gave it way to much upbeat camp, because On Her Majesty's Secret Service didn't do to well at the box office at that time as audiences didn't like the down beat ending or the fact that Bond got married, this just wasn't James Bond to them. So they started this camp route which carried on to the Roger Moore era. Believe it or not Diamonds did way better at the box office than OHMSS. Now OHMSS has gotten more popular than Diamonds by new Bond fans as audiences have changed over the years.

Actually Connery's favorite part of this one was the paycheck. He was so over Bond at this point, and sadly it shows in the final movie. He had real concerns about being typecast and he wasn't really paid that well for his previous four films considering the money they made. The rapid pace of of the multiple productions and releases also didn't help and it drove a wedge between Cubby Broccoli and Connery, who seemed to have forgotten how he became a star. There is also an ugliness to Connery's enjoyment of 'Never Say Never Again' as well. In signing on to that unofficial film, he sided with EON production's greatest enemy; Kevin McClory. McClory, who had produced and helped develop Thunderball managed through legal maneuvering to retain exclusive rights to SPECTER and partial Bond rights which he used to try to screw over EON productions and tie them up in court for years. In a final dagger to Cubby Broccoli McClory released a rival Bond movie the same year as Octopussy featuring "the original James Bond". Sadly it was just a Thunderball remake and Connery's participation was a hurtful insult to a man who thought of Connery as family and made him a household name. Fortunately Connery called Cubby on his deathbed to bury the hatchet, but the 'Never Say Never Again' fiasco only strengthened McClory's legal position and the feud continued for years.

Partially true, it was rushed for different reasons: everyone seemed to want a pay rise (even Lois Maxwell almost wasn't in this film because she wanted a better paycheck, which was all her right, I'm just saying it was just curious, considering Connery did the same). The increased salaries had the effect that several scenes had to be scaled down or reimagined to fit the new budget (there was, apparently a chase scene in a salt mine, which had to be completely scrapped because it was long, it would be expensive and the owners of the place didn't gave permission to shoot there). The rig in the end was an actual rig towed into the sea for shooting at the cost of (then) $40,000 per day... and (just to underline how everyone was really in this "rushed" feeling) it seems someone of the crew set the explosives to go of *earlier* than planned (the footage could still be recorded, but they were partially close to having to do the massive stunt all over again). Oh! And the terms of the original contracts indicated they would need to finish the film before 1975 or they would lose the rights to use the SPECTRE names and characters, including Blofeld (originally, the script featured the twin brother of Goldfinger as the villain, but this was scrapped in order to close the SPECTRE arc before the time was up). After the (then) poor result of OHMSS, its shadow put a lot of pressure on everyone to get something (anything) right again (which speaks a lot of the changes of entertainment in the past years, today how many would be franchises are, practically, almost left to die after one single apparently "bad" result).

@@BiggestDawgEver - It's hard to assign blame for everything without knowing what went on behind the scenes, but it seems like some of the blame must lie with Ian Fleming himself. He had a conversation with Kevin McClory about the possibility of having him be the producer of the Bond movies. Eventually, as we know, he went with Broccoli and Saltzman instead. But somewhere in between, he wrote Thunderball which introduced Spectre and Blofeld to the book series. McClory insisted that those had been his idea, from the conversation they had had earlier. When Thunderball was turned into a movie (one of the movies that follow the book most closely), McClory got a producer's credit, possibly to appease him. Clearly, it wasn't enough. Eventually, the courts ruled in favour of McClory who got the rights to the novel Thunderball and the concepts of Spectre and Blofeld.

This was more a Cubby Broccoli movie as the other producer, Harry Saltzman, took more of a backseat role. But would takeover on the next movie Live & Let Die with Roger Moore. Also, the producers were time strapped as Connery had only agreed to film for a certain amount of days, hence why the final climax had to shortened and we lost the salt mine battle between Blofeld and Bond after Blofeld escaped in his sea submarine.

Jen, your presentations are very well produced. Your presence, delivery, and humor are prime time. The editing is spot on. And btw, Diamonds Are Forever is my favorite Bond flick! That film has it all: Great dialogue, great action scenes, great characters. Sexy. A little camp, and some brutal fight scenes. Think about all the tech gadgets in Diamonds Are Forever! Not the least of which is the voice imitator (AI). Way ahead of it's time.

Hey Jen! The theme song "Diamonds Are Forever" is the second of 3 songs sung by Shirley Bassey, who sang "Goldfinger", and will sing "Moonraker". Plenty O'Toole was played by Lana Wood, and was the younger sister of the legendary Natalie Wood (Miracle on 34th Street, West Side Story, Rebel Without A Cause). Oddly...Lana's sister Natalie and Jill St. John (who plays Tiffany Case) share a common husband. Natalie was married to Robert Wagner, twice (they got divorced and then remarried), and was married to him when she tragically died in 1980. A few years later, Robert (almost always called RJ in Hollywood circles) married Jill St. John and I believe they are still married. Robert Wagner plays a role in the Austin Powers films that is very reminiscent of Emilio Largo (Number 2) from 'Thunderball'...the character he plays...Number 2, in Dr. Evil's organization. You can still hear the voice of Jimmy Dean (aka Willard Whyte) in commercials for Jimmy Dean Sausages, even though Dean died 12 years ago. He was never really an actor, although he did some acting...he was mainly a country singer (look up "Big Bad John" on Spotify for a laugh!). The reason that Connery came back was that Lazenby became a bit of a...well...doofus. He pulled the star card, made stupid demands, and did a movie that was completely out of left field for a guy starting an action-hero career as Bond. So, they begged Connery to return. They paid Connery a whopping $1.25 million (a record at the time) to do one more film. He then donated his entire salary for the film to establish the Scottish International Education Trust. But he was also offered the chance to do two films of his choosing for United Artists. Okay! Now on to Roger Moore as 007. He can be really good, but more often than not he tends to play Bond with more humor, and less menace...so the films can be campy. I do really like the first Moore outing...'Live And Let Die' with a really awesome theme song by Paul McCartney and Wings, and one of the most beautiful of the Bond Girls, Jane Seymour.

Since we're so far down the thread, I'll just say that my problem with the Moore films has nothing to do with the actor himself: Roger Moore is a terrific actor. But with his first film, "Live and Let Die," it seems that Broccoli Productions simply threw away the Fleming novels, and wrote their own. (Actually, it may have started with "You Only Live Twice.") The subsequent movies had NOTHING to do with Fleming's books (or short stories, like "A View to a Kill" or "Octopussy"). IMHO, the worst offender was "Moonraker," but I'm glad that people can enjoy the movie. The Moore films are fun and I understand why people love them, but by Ian Fleming standards, they're no more "James Bond stories" than "Peter Rabbit."

I have a lot of respect for Sean Connery and this film. Used to be my least favourite, but there are a lot worse. It has a weird 70's vibe and I like the music that makes this one definitely unique. Due to Connery's over 1 million dollar salary, they didn't have enough money for a better ending. Connery donated all his earnings to the Scottish International Education Trust. After the seriousness of the last Bond Movie that didn't go down to well with audiences, the director went for 'fun' with this one. Silly escapism. I think the more you watch this one, the more you appreciate it! It also was brave for the time having 2 gay henchmen in it. One of them is Crispin Glover's dad from Back To The Future, Bruce Glover! That moon buggy chase is also so random. I love it. Keep up the good work Jen. I love all your videos!!!

The one Bond film with Connery that I've seen the most. Loved Jill St. John as Tiffany Case, so hot and witty. Winn & Kidd were as creepy as they supposed be. The Bond vs. Franks fight in the elevator is one of my rough and tumble fights. The nighttime chase through Vegas while Bond driving the Mustang Mach-1 was awesome. Although this was considered Connery's very last one, it actually wasn't. He was Bond, 2 more times and done: On film, Never Say Never Again (a 1983 remake of Thunderball). In video game form, 'From Russia With Love' by EA games (2005) with Connery voicing Bond. 'Never Say Never Again' is quite fun with an older Connery playing an older Bond and it really worked. Hope you watch it.

Bit o' trivia. . .The actor portraying _Mr. Wint_ (the shorter of the two assassins) is *Bruce Glover,* the father of actor *Crispin Glover.* You can totally see the resemblance. IMO, looking at him now, at age 90, it is like looking at a 90-year-old *Crispin.* 😏 *EDIT:* One of my favorite classic _Bond_ films is *_Live and Let Die._* IMO it has some of the best music too.

Definitely!, quoting from another movie "There can be only One!" Saw Roger's flicks but I just didn't care for him. Can I say it? He just seemed too Prissy to me. The other Hollywood guys that followed I didn't care for either. You clearly have a love of this genre beyond “James Bond.” You like the “Bond girls” you like the campy plots, you like the gadgets, and you like the lairs. Because of this, I think you would really enjoy a lesser known, but just as good IMHO, series of movies about a secret agent named Flint. The two movies are Our Man Flint and In Like Flint. They are parodies of the James Bond type of film of the day, but they are so much fun with great villain lairs, sex kitten moments, and gadgets. I can’t recommend them highly enough given your love of these early Bond films, I think you will really like them if you are in the mood for a parody,

100% agree Jen. This is also my least favorite Connery film and possibly my least favorite Bond film over all. It could be said that Bond's obsessive pursuit of Blowfeld is the only nod to OHMSS and what might have been had Lazenby returned, though it works as a direct sequel to YOLT as well. It really feels like Connery was phoning it in, and the recasting of Blowfeld for the second time(with an actor we saw play someone else in YOLT) didn't help. It's overly campy, which doesn't leave the series anytime soon sadly, but the change was especially drastic when compared to the tone of OHMSS. The only thing uglier than Connery's jaded return for a paycheck was his even uglier return for the unofficial Thunderball remake; Never Say Never Again which was done out of spite.

Roger Moore is a classic Bond for me. He is the one I grew up with. I actually haven't seen this one much either. I think Goldfinger is one of my favorites from Connery for sure. BTW I love the Grandpa Weez! You're reactions are awesome and I hope you had a Merry Christmas!!!!

The producers wanted Roger Moore for this picture but he was busy at the time. Connery did not want to do it and asked for over $1M. They gave it to him and he did the picture. Moore then did the next Bond Movie. This is one of my favorites, but it is dismissed by many.

Connery then donated the entire sum to his Scottish charity and was offered even more money of $5.5 million to return in Live and Die but refused and Roger Moore took over the role from Connery to which he gave Moore his seal of approval of his being his successor. Roger Moore and Sean Connery also became close friends afterwards and stayed friends for many years until Moore’s death.

This is the Movie that neither Connery or The Producers wanted to make with each other . The Studio insisted . The paid Connery small fortune and he mailed it in his performance. The one cool thing is Howard Hughes pulled all kind of strings so they could use Vegas any way they wanted and Jimmy Dean was playing Howard Hughes (Willard White) in the movie . You do need the Moore Bond Movies in your life !!!!!

In my opinion, the best "James Bond", movie, ever. I like how it shows, 1970's, Vegas. (It looks so small, but still very fun.) All the characters are so cool. Jill St. John, as "Tiffany Case", one of the best "Bond", girls. The sadistic killers-"Mr. Wint" and "Mr. Kidd", the stumbling and animated, "Willard Whyte", in his vast casino, the super-slick "Bond Enemy"- "Ernst Stavro Blofeld", the best James Bond-Sean Connery and especially, the wonderful theme song by Shirley Bassey!!

At the Scottish Premier of the movie members of the Scotland Commonwealth games team, Scottish Rugby and a couple of boxers from Scotland were there as well as Sean Connery and Roger Moore, as if to pass on the baton. Tiny interesting fact it was Roger Moore who came up with the idea for the magnum ice cream. He had been fed up of chocolate stained fingers so thought the idea of adding a stick would be the way to go and wrote to the Walls ice cream company to promote the idea.

Apparently, the idea for ending this film on an oil rig came from a couple of people on the production team talking about OHMSS and the friction between George Lazenby and Diana Rigg. Mankiewicz walked in and thought they were talking about how Blofeld could "die on a rig"

Even though there's no real reference to OHMSS in this movie, the pre-titles clip of Bond searching for Blofeld is considered a subtle nod to the previous movie, because it's clear that Bond wants revenge for something. Even though it's not actually said, it's obvious that it's for his murder of Tracy.

The Bond films throughout the 60's are consistently good but from this point on they become a little hit and miss but in the defence of what follows, there are far more hits than misses. The next Bond film is certainly a step up from Diamonds Are Forever. Sir Roger Moore hits the ground running with his debut as the Bondster. Incidentally, the next Bond film Live and Let Die is where I came into the franchise. It was the first Bond film I ever saw and it's one of my favourites. From this point on, the stunt work gets crazy. Stick with it. Because there are some real gems to come.

Still one of my Fav Bond films. I like the scenes of old Downtown LV and in the 1st part of the chase with the Mustang Mach 1 you can see where the Plaza was being built then at the end of Fremont St. The hotel where James does his mountaineering was the old Hilton hotel & casino where Elvis made his home for many years. It's still there under a different name. The Circus Circus is still there and they used to have the performers overhead but not sure if they still do. Willard Whyte is an obvious take off of Howard Hughes who lived there and bought up many properties back in his time. No matter what others say, to me it's still a Fun Flick.

Wint and Kidd are a classic example of something about Bond movies that the Austin Powers movies have frequently taken the piss out of: TWICE in this movie, they've got Bond lying unconscious at their feet in a situation of complete privacy, and twice this unconscious man manages to escape because they've apparently never heard of things called bullets.

Not every film in Moore's catalogue is goofy or silly. Every Bond starts off earnest and serious. Live and Let Die is a great Bond and is up there with the best of the series. You'll really like that one. The thing is his series has a few more goofier moments like going to space in Moonraker (which is supposed to be the jump-the-shark moment) or having him wear a clown costume in a later film. There are just moments of silliness. I wouldn't class a single film with being too over the top. I respect the hell out of all Roger Moore's Bond's.

The point of the opening sequence is Bond exacting revenge on Blofeld for killing Tracy (r having her killed as his henchwoman actually fires the shots) . That's as deep a treatment we get of how he dealt with the loss of his only wife. There is a scene in the beginning of For Your Eyes Only there is a Blofeld who's face is never shown, and this is the last we see of Blofeld so far. I mention all of this because you commented that you had been told there is no reference in Diamonds Are Forever regarding the prior film, which is not strictly true. Regarding the rest of the movie, I actually like this one a lot. I like the nostalgia of the old Vegas that is gone but partially recorded by this movie. Several great lines (collars and cuffs, tell him he's fired, I got a bruddah, etc). Compared to today's fare, quite enjoyable.

The first bond film I saw in the Cinema in 1971. I was about 5 and boy did it make an impression but then I hadn't seen any of the others yet. All I really wanted after seeing it was my own space laser powered by diamonds. Unfortunately that was a bit out of my parents price range for Christmas so I got a model toy of the moon buggy instead which was great as I was mad on anything to do with space and the moon.
