These Austin Powers films parody Matt Helm with Dean Martin, Our Man Flint with James Coburn, and of course all the Bonds. If you've never seen it, also a saturday morning cartoon series called Johnny Quest. Loved your excitement on this one Jen 😊

Two 60's psychedelic films this took from are the spinning bed and cave lair in Danger Diabolik (1968) starring John Phillip Law, who played the angel in another 60's iconic fantasy, Barbarella, the same year. Also a spinning bed in Casino Royale. Diabolik was a masked anti-hero from Italian comic books. And the brassiere guns of the fembots are right out of The Tenth Victim (1965) a futuristic action flick starring Marcello Mastroianni and Dr. No's Ursula Andress. Ursula was also in Casino Royale. Both films are a lot of fun with very hip soundtracks and great fashion and design. The designers of Austin Powers particularly singled out Diabolik as an inspiration for the visual style they used.

The spoof was not limited to just James Bond but also all of the 1960's spy movies and English espionage television shows. The all-black leather outfits for Austin's female partners were a nod to Diana Rigg's iconic portrayal of Emma Peel on the show The Avengers. There are spoofs of Matt Helm, Our Man Flint, and the shows The Prisoner and Secret Agent Man to name a few.

I also love there's a version for, I guess _cable_ TV where he just mentions the 'shorn scrotum' in one line and then moves on to "At 18 years old I enrolled in Evil Medical School" and stuff like that. Basically for what I used to call the Channel 11 version and now I call the Channel 18 version (the respective channel numbers of the WB affiliates in New York and Orlando).

It's definitely a benefit that you watched all the Bond movies before this. These movies appealed to a lot of people outside the Bond fandom, so they wouldn't have spotted them. There's a PS2 Jamed Bond game called 'Agent Under Fire' which includes a bit where, when you're inside an evil lair you can look into a big pool of water and see... Sharks With Frickin Laser Beams attached to their heads!

It hints at Dr No but and Drax from Moonraker but I think is closest to "Donald Pleasence" outfit as Ernst Stavro Blofeld in "You only Live Twice" that its based on as is much of the character as he the villain with the white pussy not Dr No.

Mike Myers did a wonderful tribute speech for Sean Connery, years ago when he was at the AFI awards and said his Main bond inspiration was from Sean's original movies. Mike also said that he did Austin Powers for his dad, his dad loved James Bond and so did Mike. The Austin Powers movies came from a place of real love for the Bond films and his dad.

Fun fact___the band shown in the transitions is called Ming Tea and features 90's indie rock darling Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs, singer/guitarist for The Bangles. The band was started by Mike Myers after he left Saturday Night Live and Austin Powers was a character he invented to be the frontman of the band. It was Mike Myers' wife who suggested he write a movie based on that character. Also, the nightclub scene at the beginning was based on scenes from a late 60's movie called "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" . The line Austin says, "this is my happening and it freaks me out" is a verbatim quote from the movie.

You might have missed the point of the opening where Austin Powers is running from all his fans because that isn't Bond related. It is 60's related, though because it's actually a reference to The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" movie where they were being chased by wild fans.

The slowly moving dipping mechanism was a reference to the end of Live and Let Die, and the villain turned his back and didn't even watch. Also, Dr. Evil in this film is closest to Blofeld from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. In that movie, he had a cure for allergies, worth billions probably but tossed it all away for his dumb plan to become a count. Same thing here with Virtucon, it's worth billions but Dr. Evil is oblivious, and tosses it all away for his evil plans.

Jen, you sell yourself short. Seriously, you pick up more details after seeing movies once than most people do after watching them three or four times. It's actually quite impressive. I have somewhat mixed feelings about the next two movies, but there are details and scenes that I really like, and I'm sure you'll love them. Compared to most people watching this nowadays you actually have a really unique perspective since youve been watching through the James Bond series here recently. For this reason it was especially fun to watch along with you, and entertaining to see you appreciate the humor and references. One thing you might not know is that this isnt just a James Bond parody, in fact it gets even more inspiration from the The Avengers TV show, The Flynn movies, a couple Micheal Cane capers, etc which were all much more swinging 60s Mod than Bond was. Anyway Im glad you were able to catch a lot of details and more importantly enjoy the whole atmosphere and setup of this parody as well as the direct satire. What this movie does well for a parody is stand on its own legs so to speak, instead of copying the originals beat for beat which gets stale (cough Scary Movie series cough)

All three movies are great, but the first was my favorite of the bunch, as they recycle some of the jokes across the other two films. But if anyone ever watched these out of order, I think the first one they see will be their fav, as all of them are of an equal quality overall, good comedy franchise for sure. Enjoy!

I love this film! The 'Austin Powers' at least the first two are huge nostalgic throwbacks to me since I was a teen in the late 90s and exactly the right age for this. Also Elizabeth Hurley is my favourite 'non canon' Bond Girl - so gorgeous and stylish and funny! While this is my favourite looking forward to seeing what you make of the sequels Jen!

One of the best franchises to launch out of the 1990s. Mike Myers after Wayne's World and before Shrek really went major with this one. Love of the Bond films (Roger Moore's era mostly), a 2-part film series called "FLINT" with the late James Coburn, British culture of the swingin' 1960s and American culture at that time in the late 90s. Myers as AP and Dr. Evil, cleverly played. His performance and writing along with every piece of pop culture that was noticeable is perfect. Brilliantly undeniable period. The sequels aren't bad neither. You'll enjoy them. Oh yeah. Peep the Soundtracks as well.

My brother and his daughter and I saw this movie in the theater. We really laughed long and loud at the "They're always after me Lucky Charms" line. And then Frau Farbissina explaining the joke to him just made it even funnier. To this day when we eat candy we say, "Oooh, this is candy, I'm having fun!"

Although Dr. Evil was an homage to Blofeld in appearance, his voice, characteristics and the pinky were Saturday Night Live alumnus Myers imitation of SNL's creator/producer Lorne Michaels. If you ever see The Kids in The Hall's movie "Brain Candy", you'll find that the villain also is an imitation of Lorne Michaels. And if you ever get a chance, I recommend that under-recognized movie as well.

Jen you got it right by watching all the Bond movies first so that you can appreciate just how truly hilarious AP movies are. When other "reactors" have watched it, you can tell most of the reference jokes go completely over their heads. They usually see it as Myers just being goofy, but it's really comic genius. In case it hasn't been mentioned yet, the Dr Evil character was based on Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of Saturday Night Live, and Myer's old boss. The look, the voice, the mannerisms, even the use of words like "frikkin" and "throw me a bone here people."

Austin Powers' theme song is called "Soul Bossa Nova". Released in 1962, Quincy Jones wrote it in 20 minutes. Before the film, a rearranged version was the theme of a Canadian game show (Definition). The film's music consultant (Chris Douridas) recommended the song to Mike Myers.

There's a running gag that was unfortunately cut out of major releases- whenever one of the henchmen gets killed it cuts to a scene of their friends and family getting news of the death, to debunk the concept of them being faceless unimportant casualties.

Jen, love, love your reactions. Always one of the highlights of the week. You are the perfect reactor for this movie as you are the only one with the brilliance and patience to have seen all the Bond movies in order from 'Dr. No' to 'Diamonds are Forever' that this movie draws from. The scene near the opening where he is trying to run away from the girls chasing him and even wearing a fake beard disguise is a throwback to the opening scene of the Beatles' 1964 movie 'A Hard Day's Night' where 3 of the 4 Beatles are trying to avoid the crowds of girls chasing them and Paul McCartney is sitting on a bench wearing a fake beard. You forgot to mention that the two scenes where he is claiming the women that he hits are really just men is the opening to the 1965 movie 'Thunderball’. Remember Sean Connery fights the widow in black who is really a man and then he escapes the mansion via the jetpack. If you go back to the comments on 'You Only Live Twice' (3rd one down) you'll see why I said you needed to see that movie to get the Austin Powers movies. Keep up the wonderful reactions. 13:40 It's so weird that Austin Powers, of all people, understands the dynamics of consent. I honestly think that's just the wholesome nature of Mike Myers coming through. You have to understand that this was a time when the idea of getting a girl drunk for consent was a thing. Society had the mindset that it t was normal to think, "If I get her drunk enough to say yes, then the answer is yes...and I have consent." It was a disgusting time, but it was real at that time. And it's so fascinating that such a sexually driven fictional character from the 60s thrown into the 90s was so respectful in that way. I think it just shows that Mike Myers is a good and wholesome person, and he wanted Austin Powers to be that way.

When he`s taking the pics of the evil plans with his mini spy camera, it shows plans for a Carrot Top movie. It came out about a year later (Chairman of the Board) and it also has a Bond reference in it too.

In 4 years this movie will be 30 years old, the same amount of time Austin and Dr. Evil were frozen. The theme is "Soul Bossa Nova" by Quincy Jones (1962). It was used in a love scene in the Sidney Lumet film "The Pawnbroker" (1964), In a comedic prison break scene in Woody Allen's "Take the money and run" (1969) and several other movies & TV shows since.

I've started reactions to this before but switched off when i realised they hadn't actually seen any bond films and were missing even the obvious jokes... this was refreshing, i think you caught most of them. And yeah, it's all about Dr Evil - he steals the show! Especially the monologue about his upbringing and summers in Rangoon, and when he sings the meow mix advert - fucking hilarious!!

I do love this series. Mike Myers actually claims he started his Dr. Evil portrayal by starting with SNL creator Lorne Michaels and _then_ adding in various Blofields. I also love that Austin Powers was (if it's not clearly established, I think it will be more over the next two movies) a well known _photographer_ in the 60's, somewhat like how James Bond would variously be a banker or otherwise an employee of Universal Exports (though remember in Tomorrow Never Dies that they neglected to give the impression he's anything but a picture perfect employee? At least Austin has a job where he, you know, produces tangible results), John Clark in the Clancy novels occasionally is covered as a _geological expert_ of sorts (because it's his hobby, and also because he works in countries where geological finds are probable) and Richard Marcinko and SEAL Team SIX were covered as consultants for a marine research facility (in _real life_ no less), but always with their real names.

FWIW, this also borrows a lot from period movies like "Our Man Flint," the Harry Palmer movies (featuring Michael Caine), and the Matt Helm movies (featuring Dean Martin), the Woody Allen Bond film ("Casino Royale"), and other such things ... including maybe a dash of "Love, American Style." I think you'll love the next Austin Powers movies. Yeah, baby!

I know you're obviously into spy films and TV series Jen, so here's an interesting fact about Austin Powers that most people don't know: while the Austin Powers character and films are obviously based on James Bond, the actual physical appearance of AP with his spectacles is actually based on another great British 1960s spy film series starring Michael Caine as Harry Palmer. The films were intended as a more realistic version of James Bond. So it was no accident Michael Caine appeared in the third AP film (Austin Powers in Goldmember). There's also another connection between the first Harry Palmer film, _The Ipcress File (1965),_ and the James Bond franchise - the great John Barry who composed the music for most of the Bond films also composed the music for the The Ipcress File, and it's another great film score. Also, Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Michael Caine were good friends.

In the Austin Powers films, he snuck in homages to The Beatles' first two films A Hard Day's Night and Help!. (Mike Myers is a huge Beatles fan.)

A bit of trivia: "Daniel Craig, who portrayed James Bond on screen from 2006 to 2021, credited the Austin Powers franchise with the relatively serious tone of later Bond films. In a 2014 interview, Craig said, "We had to destroy the myth because Mike Myers f*cked us", making it "impossible" to do the gags of earlier Bond films which Austin Powers satirized." To which I only have to say: Cowards.

It should be noted that, aside from being a Bond parody, Austin Powers is also a take on the classic British hero Adam Adamant, a dashing spy who is frozen in ice in 1902, only to be found and thawed in 1966.
