Diana Al-Hadid’s work looks like a pile of ruins and an act of creation at the same time. Her work presents us with an opportunity to reflect on art history, language, and any other symbolic system that we use to communicate ideas across time and space.

Thank you for making these videos! I didn't know about keys being a symbol that represent... I already forgot which one, but that was sort of going to be my point, that because I know you're going to talk about some cool modern piece of art, I'm willing to pay attention to some boring old piece of cultural history. And it is also slightly frustrating to me that artworks can have such rich backstory, or, idk, have a cool Easter-egg inside it, but if I was at that gallery, all I'd see would be a cool melty wall. I'd love the wall regardless, but knowing it's referencing something makes it a little bit cooler.

You are using cartoon in a way that I'm not familiar with. Can you explain how cartoon is different than a painting in this context?

A cartoon here is used as a draft for another work. So Raphael's cartoon was used as a draft for his tapestry.
